I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out, and two amazing things happened: 1) At the end of the movie as the credits were rolling, nobody left the theater or moved; in fact, there was complete silence, as the screen went blank and the lights came up. I've never experienced this in a movie theater before or since. 2) I won a contest in which I predicted that Amadeus would sweep the Oscars. I had never won anything before that.
Amadeus is the simplest reason why 3D movies the entertainment movies will never ever achivee a certine level a intelectuall level that we all miss so mutch in movies today.
Yeah, everything looked as it must have back then; it wasn't all Hollywood pastiche. It looked like someone did some actual research on the clothing, make-up & wigs of the period. Even tho food looked authentic.
Amadeus is a beautiful film, when I first saw it, I was mixed about it, but it really grows on you. The story, the acting, the cinematography. Milos Forman went all out to create a lavish epic.
There are plenty of books on him. The greatest error the film makes is that Salieri hated Mozart. On the contrary: they were, at most, riendly rivals, and admirers of each other's music. Also, Mozart did not work on the Requiem in his dying hours. He worked on it a few days prior to his death, before his hands became too swollen with rheumatic fever to continue.
it's not exactly the film that messed up, its was based on the play, which in turn was based on an opera from some 100 years eariler, when people knew even less about the situation between mozart and salieri. but its still a great story!
I admit that I like those costume films! They raise imagination in my mind and a flair for art in picture and music. I started to love paintings and classical music thanks to such films
Jeffery Jones got Heavy... He was a good actor.. too bad he turned out to be fucked up. I still don't like F Murry Aberham.. This is good but some 'secret's' should remain secret. Like Tom's piano playing in the movie.. Blew the magic for me...
Forman is God

This is what I love about some film directors. They don't care how famous the actors are. As long as the actor can become the character.

Does anyone know what piece is playing from the start to 02:06? Probably something in E flat major?

Symphony No.25 in G minor, K183. He wrote it at 17, it's not one of his more sophisticated works.

@EmperorOfWei It's called "symphonia concertante"

"First film with music as its leading character"? I don't think so. Think back to American Graffiti.

We have to give full credit to the great Saul Zaentz, whose idea it was to create this marvelous film and helped finance it!
