Just want to point out that the petition that 30,000 scientists supposedly signed (mentioned below) against global warming is completely bogus. This petition was created by Arthur Robinson, a fruitcake biochemist, and his Oregon Institute for Science and Medicine, which is run out of his farm. The petition he sent out has been described as extremely misleading and many have said it misled them into thinking this was something from the National Academy of Sciences.
Arthur Robinson sells (or sold) a kit designed to help parents who are concerned about "socialism in the schools". Of the "faculty" he listed on his website, one had been dead for 7 years and another for 2 years. There can never be a "consensus" in science meaning a stop on research. There could be a majority thinking this or that, but there will always be other perspectives and maybe some day it will show that the former minority positions will be proven facts. So science should be a bit more than ideology or religion, but it should never be a one absolute right position and the others only 'heretics'.

This is a question to people who believe co2 has no overall effect on our temp. Im not saying it does or it doesnt. I was just wondering: if volcanoes emit co2 when they errupt, then is this not a variable to our overall temp. So, when we use millions of barrels of oil a day which is co2, are we not emitting co2 into the atmosphere, and therefore altering the temp. So if volcanoes emit Co2 and and we emit co2 then are we altering temperature, just like the volcanoes.

The only bit of evidence that supports global cooling is the very slight drop in deep ocean temperatures over the last 5 years but nothing conclusive can be drawn from that since it's only 5 years worth of data and no single theory as to why that might be has won a consensus.

NOBODY denies that global warming is REAL. What is debatable is if it has an anthropogenic component, and HOW much of the GW is caused by the human activity (industrial and automobiles CO2 emissions).
1- IF there is an anthropogenic component, how much is it? Would the gradual elimination of man made CO2 solve the GW problem?
2- IF the GW is ONLY caused by the natural sun activity, we can´t do anything about it, no one can "change" the sun "moods".
But one thing that we must remember is that the same sources of man made CO2 are producing pollution real bad for nature as a whole and particularly to human beings. The pollution produced by the huge coal burning thermoelectric in the US (ca. 50% of the total electricity production in the US) is producing ALSO huge amounts of heavy metal pollutants, acid rain etc.
These are all harmful to human health, they increase all kinds of diseases that cost a lot of money to treat plus human death. The US has the highest rate of cancer in the world i guess.

The food shortage has not been caused by biofuels. Australia is the largest rice producer and has been dealing with a drought for the better part of the last decade. The EU is trying to direct blame towards biofuels (mainly ethanol) because they themselves are wanting to increase the exports of their own biodiesels which are made from vegetable oil. If the developed world ended ag. subs. it would stimulate dev. countries to increase food production.

My apologies again for misattributing Freeman's accomplishment as Nobel. He is a Templeton laureate -- not Nobel... as well as a Princeton Physics professor and a preeminent physicist overall.
The 'Hockey Stick' is a graph of the earth's temperature for the last 1000 years that does not show the Medieval warm Period (when it was warmer than it is now) or the Little Ice Age (when it was colder). To reasonably define something as "hyper-exaggerateded" you need a study, a foundation of "real" claims. It's an easy phrase to use to convey that those you don't aggree with are unreasonable despite the lack of evidence.
Not as many as you may think believe that nuclear power is a good option. There remains risks of pollution, the construction costs are terribly high ($7B ?), the construction period is about a decade, and we STILL have no waste storage facility. Nuclear? No thanks.

This petition was created by Arthur Robinson, a fruitcake biochemist, and his Oregon Institute for Science and Medicine, which is run out of his farm. The petition he sent out has been described as extremely misleading and many have said it misled them into thinking this was something from the National Academy of Sciences.

There can never be a "consensus" in science meaning a stop on research. There could be a majority thinking this or that, but there will always be other perspectives and maybe some day it will show that the former minority positions will be proven facts. So science should be a bit more than ideology or religion, but it should never be a one absolute right position and the others only 'heretics'.

Amazing to think that Einstein's theories still are being debated, what we know about physics is ever evolving, what we know about biology and life is still ever growing, but somehow we were able to figure out and predict with 100% certainty the earths climate caused by man is chaining the climate. The real focus should be on heavy pollutants like mercury released from coal rather than CO2 gas.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Whether human activity causes global warming is, in the aggregate, inconsequential--should the earth grow too warm, ocean thermohaline cycles will break down and plunge us into another ice age.
It saddens me that people use controversy over global warming as a catch-all to debunk other, very real environmental threats. Destruction of habitat, deforestation, water contamination, overfishing, and overuse of fertilizers are still issues that need to be addressed.

This is a question to people who believe co2 has no overall effect on our temp. Im not saying it does or it doesnt. I was just wondering: if volcanoes emit co2 when they errupt, then is this not a variable to our overall temp. So, when we use millions of barrels of oil a day which is co2, are we not emitting co2 into the atmosphere, and therefore altering the temp. So if volcanoes emit Co2 and and we emit co2 then are we altering temperature, just like the volcanoes.

Actually, no... they didn't. Many of the anti-science crowd seem to pretend that NASA report on "the iris effect" supports global cooling when in fact it is the opposite. The only bit of evidence that supports global cooling is the very slight drop in deep ocean temperatures over the last 5 years but nothing conclusive can be drawn from that since it's only 5 years worth of data and no single theory as to why that might be has won a consensus.

NOBODY denies that global warming is REAL. What is debatable is if it has an anthropogenic component, and HOW much of the GW is caused by the human activity (industrial and automobiles CO2 emissions).
1- IF there is an anthropogenic component, how much is it? Would the gradual elimination of man made CO2 solve the GW problem?
2- IF the GW is ONLY caused by the natural sun activity, we can´t do anything about it, no one can "change" the sun "moods".

But one thing that we must remember is that the same sources of man made CO2 are producing pollution real bad for nature as a whole and particularly to human beings. The pollution produced by the huge coal burning thermoelectric in the US (ca. 50% of the total electricity production in the US) is producing ALSO huge amounts of heavy metal pollutants, acid rain etc.

These are all harmful to human health, they increase all kinds of diseases that cost a lot of money to treat plus human death. The US has the highest rate of cancer in the world i guess.
Most of fresh water fish in the US is contaminated by mercury coming from industrial emissions. Respiratory diseases, cancers, etc, the list is long.
IF the global warming would not have an anthropogenic part, the pollution HAS a huge bad consequence to human health, no one questions THAT.

If the US would invest the same they are spending in Iraq on more hydro-electricity, wind and photo voltaic farms, geothermal plants and even more nuclear plants to generate electricity the CO2 and the dangerous pollution would be solved.

The hugest hydro-electric on the planet the Chinese Three Gorge Dam (almost 4 times bigger than Grand Coulee) cost 25 billion dollars, with a capacity of 25 gigawatts. 25 billion is nothing for a country with 500 billion a year as the military budget.
Why doesn't the gov. invests massively in hydro, wind, nuclear, solar, geothermal, etc?
Bush said war generates jobs. Why not create huge amount of jobs investing massively in clean energy instead of the "killing Iraqis industry"?

The debate is over. I saw Dr Miocho Kaku interviewed in 1991. He was scratching his head then as to why there was any doubt about AGW. He kept referring to actions/inactions of president Bush. GHW Bush.

If you do claim to be a libertarian, then your candidate would be Bob Barr. He again establishes the fact of the myth of man made global warming and an overwhelming dissent among top scientists. He would be a true libertarian and let American oil companies explore, drill and refine oil....you know, do what a business is supposed to do without the government getting in the way or being a burden to the market place. The goal of the overwhelming majority and the most prominent of environmentalists is to save freedom and free-market capitalism. Let's say you're right though, and all of the CO2 we're pumping into the atmosphere (a proven greenhouse gas) is, for some unknown reason, not causing the long-term warming trend. If we do act and it turns out you're right, then the only loss we suffer is (for the sake of argument) a loss of some economic growth.

Now, on to the bit about control - is it totalitarian for the government to stop you from dumping raw sewage into a river that runs through my property? Because releasing enormous quantities of CO2 puts me at risk and violates my rights - even under an extreme libertarian (I lean towards libertarian myself, FYI) paradigm - the government is justified in taking action to stop polluters.
This does not necessitate the abandonment of capitalism, the implementation of central planning, or anything of the sort. Claiming that's the aim of all environmentalists is a patently dishonest straw-man, not least because we span the entire political spectrum.

- Higher Taxation: Not at all. I agree with Al Gore that the best policy is a revenue-neutral tax on CO2 emissions, offset dollar for dollar by a tax break on labor. I've never heard anyone propose a simple increase in taxes as a solution to climate change. Furthermore, the rate and amount of taxation is independent of the amount of CO2 abated. This is just a red herring.

There are a few who disagree that we must abolish our dependence on foreign oil and for that matter fossil fuels in general. But holding our country's economy hostage to propaganda before any renewable technology has been patented and developed, or even commercialized? Europe is building 70+ nuclear plants now, the "Old Soviet Union" is giving huge tax breaks to their energy companies to find additional resources and develop alternatives.

China has doubled its oil usage in 10 years, and will triple its usage today in the next 10 years. While the people here in the U.S. suffer from rising energy prices.

The food shortage has not been caused by biofuels. Australia is the largest rice producer and has been dealing with a drought for the better part of the last decade. The EU is trying to direct blame towards biofuels (mainly ethanol) because they themselves are wanting to increase the exports of their own biodiesels which are made from vegetable oil. If the developed world ended ag. subs. it would stimulate dev. countries to increase food production.

The 'Hockey Stick' is a graph of the earth's temperature for the last 1000 years that does not show the Medieval warm Period (when it was warmer than it is now) or the Little Ice Age (when it was colder). This was used by the IPCC & Gore to try to make us believe that the warming in the 20th century was unusual, when it was in fact quite normal. neither IPCC nor Gore use it now since is has been shown to be a lie.

I agree with Dobbs on many many issues and I believe he is a great American as well as a patriot, but I firmly disagree with the notion that climate change is caused by humans. Surely we pollute and cause harm to the environment, but climate change is a ploy to control the finest minutia from what we drive to bottled water. The earth has been here for longer then humans exist. How do we know this isn't just natural change?

wow I'm surprised to see Dobbs not attacking these guys. And just as an aside note, climate change IS a reality and YES human contributions are increasing the rate at which it is progressing. I am studying Environmental Geography at the University of Guelph (canada) and the vast majority of scientists support the basic theory.
