  • cool! thanks.

  • You're amazing! Thank you!!! :)

  • hi, i think your video is great, i have a 1 year old husky who isnt keen on other dogs ,do you have any videos or advice on how to deal with this, thanks.

  • @111hachi I don't know what Kikopup would personally advise, but I have a book recommendation for you. Check out "Feisty Fido" by Patricia McConnell and Karen London. It's a very short and inexpensive read about handling leash reactivity. Your dog may not learn to LOVE other dogs, but if it can learn to tolerate them then great. Search for a video called "Study in Leash Reactivity -- Video 1 Brandi" (it won't let me link it). It demonstrates an owner working with her reactive dog.

  • how smart is the rescued dog? or is just me ? XD great video, as always!

  • Simple, elegant, and it seems like it should be obvious; always train for the behavior you want. But mugging was a huge stumbling block for me, oh, around 5 years ago, when I got a few hours to work with horses (I hadn't before). Perhaps I would have thought more clearly with a smaller animal, but I think any beginner will be grateful for this tip. The low value treat tip is a stroke of insight as well, thank you.

  • Bogart is SO FREAKING CUTE !

  • what happens if my dog first understands it but then out next training session she forgets

  • I have watched this video more than 8 times just to see Bogart! He's such a cutie!

  • what treats do you give?

  • I'm so gald found your videos. I' m viisiting you again and again for my puppy.

  • Question: Do you just click? Or say "leave it" too?

  • Question: Do you just click? Or say "leave it" too?

  • Hi,

Is it ok to start training with an 8 week old puppy or when is the best time to start with training?

  • Excellent. It all seems such common sense. Except that I just did not think of it! Thank you.

  • This method is so effective!! but do you eventually stop clicking and giving the dog treats every time he does something right?

  • Nice video! Especially since you didn't gloss over the "exceptions". So often trainers/books/videos etc. state "If dog does A,B or C then do X". But they never address what to do if the dog does "D". I thought you were falling into that pattern with the "Obviously not if it's really painful" comment. However at the end you inserted the additional info (using carrot etc) that addressed that issue. Nice job!

  • I'm so glad I found your videos! :D I was amazed how quickly this works.

  • @Pandaraze Yes! With the right reinforcement and setting the dog up to succeed!

  • @lanifanwar Tiny cubes of meat :) to keep it healthy. Cheese on occasions.

  • whatcompany of treats you ar eusing ?

  • @iMusicTranceHipHop I like to keep it healthy and use real meat, but I will use kibble, and cheese, and any sort of brand of dog treats that are soft and easy to cut up and swallow. But I try to stick with the fresh stuff.

  • DefeatedDreamer:

For getting eye contact, move the clicker or treats to your face so he'll look at your face or make kissing noises and click the split second he looks at your face.

  • @josski32 nice advice :)

  • @kikopup thank you. it's your advice, really.

  • My dogs still won't leave the food. They leave it but then I may sneeze, shift slighlty, or they may get distracted by a noise outside and then its back to square one. I've been trying for weeks and its so frustrating. They also won't look at my face. Only at the clicker or food. Can anyone help me?

  • @DefeatedDreamer you could also try- having the food 10 feet away - food on the ground or in a dish is lame, and food you have is 100 times tastier, get the eye contact, then move closer and closer as you succeed. Then make the food the dog has to leave more and more interesting as the dog succeeds

  • I have a 2 year old chihuahua and she hates the clicker..She understands it, it seems once we do it for a while, but as soon as I pull out the clicker and click it, she hates the sounds and gets scared. After a few minutes of doing it she gets over it though and gets the connection..Do I need a clicker that isnt so loud?

  • @OfARepublic Yeah, I muffle mine with layers of duct tape on the dimple or a piece of poster take on the dimple- if you were to click it near your head you would see how fricken loud they are- its silly they still make clickers that loud- I think so many dogs get so scared of them the first time they hear them- really silly...

  • Fantastic Training! :))

Is there a way to train a default leave it when training with toys? Tennis Balls are a huge reinforcer for my dog and I want to try training more complex behaviors but treats aren't motivating enough for her. And she gets overly aroused around toys. Thank you :)

    Marie and Lauren~

  • NNiiiccee :D i will start right away got a german shepherd puppie :) 4 months old :D

  • The Golden mix is so cute being a good boy! I bought a Shar Pei yesterday and he's so playful! I want to train him to do this :) And I'll use the lid of a jar as my clicker :)

  • But how do they understand what the clicker means if you are supposed to do this exercise before starting the actual training?

  • @kikopup I was wondering if you come to people's houses and do training sessions and for how much. Thanks :)

  • the golden mix is the best dog ever =]

  • And need to knowhow I can walk them all together without anyone pulling! Please please help me!

  • P.s. I have 5 dogs :)

  • @the123kaylad thanks for the advice :) after the 3rd dog I'm almost getting tired even of I train for 5 to 10 mins. So how did it work for you? @kikopup please please help me my Bichon always barks loudly and for hours if i don't walk him first. He is okay with other behaviors except for this please help! I have to resort to wearing my outdoor clothing under my pjs so I can sneak out of my room to walk my Weim.

  • My dog looks at me for eye contact but for a brief second. What can I do? Please help, she's a chocolate Labrador. I can't give her something food that she has less interest in. She eats fruit as well. The fruit bowl has to be hidden from her! She eats anything, even fruit+veg.

  • HI KIKOPUP LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! I HAVE 5 DOGS AND WANT TO START ALL OF THEM ON CLICKER TRAINING- I HAVE 2 PUPPIES AND THE REST ARE ADULT SMALL BREEDS WHAT SCHED CAN YOU SUGGEST? ALSO MY HAND GETS ALL OILY AFTER THE HOTDOGS START THAWING ANY OTHER TREATS I CAN USE? PLEASE HELP!!!!

    THANKS!!!!

    lori from the philippines

  • @lriveramd I asked kikopup the same question :) You can use cheezits or put the hot dog peices in a plastic bag and stick the plastic bag in your pocket! Hope this helps.

  • my 8 week old puppy just falls asleep when try to train him... cutee but frustrating.. i guess hes too young..

what treats would u recommend for a GSD puppy? for training

  • I've tried the method in this video but my puppy gets frustrated so easily and ends up biting my hand to get at the treat. She knows the commands sit, down, and stand but she does it while snapping at my hand to get the treat. Please help. How can I stop her from doing this?

  • My puppy is a Jack Russell Terrier so my puppy is really hyper and full of energy, when I take him for a walk, He drags and sometimes my wrist hurts, or sometimes my hand goes red, but it really HURTS! He tries to run and jump up to people (including out in the street, or when guest's come.) Even when he goes to poop it looks like he's trying to do it in the middle of the road when we cross the road. I drag him back on the path but its always to late, what should I do?please reply back if u can.

  • Xanubi, I think what u would do is continue this leave it practice and begin using your cue (the words, ie 'leave it') to associate with the action which can then be used for anthing.

I think though that the with ongoing training the dogs learn to leave anything they aren't given by their handler so they don't really ever need a cue.

  • How do you associate this behavior with "leave it" though, so it can be used in other situatiosn such as a dog who wants to check out some poop or a squirrel?

  • where do you get a clicker ?

  • CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT TYPE OF TREATS I COULD USE TO TRAIN MY PUPPY?

  • What if the dog pouts when they're not mugging the hand?

  • awee so cute, im getting a shiba pup on this Saturday tri color, gonna be about 4 days before 8 weeks im so excited! any advice?

  • @kikopup hey i was wondering a couple of things.....first where can you get a "clicker"? and secound, can i still train my 3 yr old lab how to behave by introducing it to the clicker?

  • what cute puppies!! and the retriever was so smart! but what is the point of the clicker?

  • How do I know if I'm moving foward too fast while teaching my dog? She seems to be slow...how long on average does it take an adult dog to learn a new behavior?

  • Keep up the good job you are fabulous

  • I see you used to the clicker for everything. So how does the dog know when you want him to sit, look at you, or are something else.

  • thank you so much kikopup your videos are very informative and helpful. so this is what we should teach a dog first before clicker training correct? after a dog has learned this when is a good time to teach it new tricks like its name? also after it has learned its name or any other tricks when would it be ok to start teaching it new tricks? for example i taught my dog its name would it be ok to start doing another trick like sit or should i stick with 1 trick for awhile like a week or more?

  • Thank you so much for providing this video. This has been quite a revelation to me and its amazing how quickly it learns. Thank you so much again.

  • Kikopup, what treats do you use? I want to start clicker training, but my dog is completely uninterested. Thank you!

  • what if im trying to train my puppy and she just leaves? and always ignores any tips

  • Barker and Barker make brilliant training treats for clicker training. They are very low fat and come in tablet size.

  • What kind treat training that you use for your dogs? I dont want make my puppies overweight. Am i wrong?

  • This so useful. My dog always tries to paw or chew m pocket cus its where i keep my treats.

  • I had one question. On your video where you are teaching the 'Stay' command, you say that it isn't always good to teach eye contact, but in this video you say you WANT eye contact. Is it different for the 'Leave It' command? Thanks! Great videos, can't wait to start training my pup!

  • i just have a question. im getting a puppy in two days!!! I am going to use clickertraning. But should I teach her this before I teach her name?

  • awesome video! your games are definitely effective thank you! PLEASE keep posting! =]

  • Very good video, I have a doubt though. Am I supposed to do this training every time before I try other training (like teaching my dog to sit down)? Or should I try this exercise alone for a few days before I start training my dog in some other skills?

  • I wish I would have known to teach my puppy this when I first got him. I am trying to teach him know

  • what's a clicker? is it an object or are you making the sound with your mouth? where's the sound coming from? im so confused. im getting a 4 month old puppy later today and i have no idea how to start training. its my first pet. somebody help??

  • @7HCO7 A clicker is a toy that makes that sound when you press a button on it. You can get one at pet store or from Amazon. BF Skinner came up with the idea. (Back then, the toy was called a "cricket.") I just make a sound with my cheek and gums, so I always have my "clicker" with me.

  • Thanks! Just started working on this yesterday, so happy to find this video today! My girl is a rescue who was a starving stray, so she's very food motivated, but she's doing well! Just discovered you and am looking forward to watching all your videos!

  • Help! I have a 1and a half month puppy that bytes averythyng including the cat. She is playing with her but sometimes she is byting her from the neck and I am afraid that she will hurt her or maybe killing her later. Please help me. Thancks

  • Comment removed

  • Nice! But I have a pug he is so food crazy. No matter what I do he gets to crazy! Even with a low level treat!

  • @magoddess maybe do this exercise with him when he has already eaten and is completely full. Just a thought.

  • Can anyone answer my question . I have a 4 months chihuahua and what kind of treat do they for training?

  • Great vid. My question is when to add the words "leave it"???

  • @karunald I think she didn't use the cue here because she called this a "default" leave it...meaning the dog wouldn't be focused on the treats during training. Check out her video "How to teach leave it without intimidation". She does introduce the cue there once she's confident the dog will leave it. You may have already found it. Good luck with your training!

  • YOU ARE FANTASTIC TRAINER MY LADY

  • emily, i am getting a japanese spitz puppy and im not sure what order would be best for training. what order of things should i train my new puppy when i get it?

  • Hi Emily, I just got my brand new Vizsla puppy today! He's 7 weeks old but has very sharp teeth! I've tried this method but it really does hurt! What should I do?

  • Hi, I like the idea of never punishing your dog but I was just wondering what the difference is between saying 'uh uh' in a pleasant tone obviously rather than a cross one and making a kissy noise like you prefer? do you need some way of correcting a behaviour or should you just wait as long as it takes?

  • How do we subscribe to the free training segments as the narrator mentions at the end of this clip?

    Thanks.

  • Our pup Noodle arrived yesterday! I'm new to clicker training and by following your videos have got him making eye contact (how gorgeous!), and not watching my hand for the food. He is still showing interest in the treat bag and he nicked my clicker earlier on and tried to make it click! How cute is that? My fella asked me what I'd have done if it had clicked, so I told him 'I'd have to treat him of course'. He's also working on sit, down, rollover, and ring a bell to go out.

  • minty737, can you try holding the treat higher up? I often do it just above the dog's ear level, so it's just not very comfortable for them to mug at my hand for very long.

  • I am absolutely in love with your videos! For the past few weeks I've been 'fostering' two rescue shepherds and the one of them is extremely difficult to train because he very interested in food. I watched this video once, tried it with him today, and he's made amazing breakthrough! He no longer bites at my hands or jumps up to get the food, instead, he will actually wait for it. Thank you so much! :)

  • Hey Emily,

My 6 month old puppy is so excitable that she does hurt me when she mouths my hand trying to get the food. So waht do you do in that case?

I also wondered if this method can be used to teach her a default leave it on items shes not supposed to chew? For example when shes excited and wants to play she pulls on our socks gloves or - most annoyingly - jean legs. Ive tried redirecting her to other toys but she just ignores them, even her favourites.

  • you are getting a lot out there, thanks Emily!

  • thumbs up for smiling and laughing :P :D

  • Great job! You're videos are awesome. I'm not only watching them, but I keep sending emails to others about them, and especially to people I know who are involved in rescue. I'm sure that they can use this to help find a good home for these animals. Thanks for your insight and hard work.

  • My dog is afraid of our fan he is nervous around it and wants no where near it. If he has to go by it to go outside it takes two or three times to make a full run go by it. I want him to see that the fan is a good thing and not something that is going to eat him. He is scared of the vaccum too.

  • hi !!!

Another great video. Bogart is soo cute. I luv golden retrievers. You are the best clicker tainer i the world. kisses from bradford :)

  • Another great video and what an adorable pup! :)

Hey Emily, can I ask you something? Why do you think a lot of people are against clicker training, and positive reinforcement? I've seen so many people say it is "a weak training method, and is used so you don't hurt the poor puppy's feelings" and a lot of people seem to think that positive trainers "ignore ALL bad behaviours" Isn't more accurate to say that you redirect it? (c)

  • Hmm.. I guess some people are just ignorant and can't get with the times.

Sorry I'm asking here, I know you get alot of messages but you read your comments.

    Hayley

  • Great tutorial.

My oldest dog doesn't think the same about it, she likes everything!!

But she has to....wait and Oh boy does she find it difficult...

  • Very useful, thank you! :D

  • your the best....:P i used all your training on my now 10 months old australian shepherd and she amazing, she is so smart she learned the leave it commando in like 2 minutes.

also gave your youtube channel to my sister she has a new saint bernard dog and a horrible training school(like using a pinch collar would do any good..nice school huh.) recommanded her to leave that school and watch you video'sinstead :)

keep on doing your great teachings...thumbs up

  • Great video!

  • the tail... sho cute.... XD

  • If you train this first, then I'm guessing you're not luring sits or downs? If you're not luring, are there any options besides capturing?

  • I actually want to revise that, I've seen you use luring in other videos, but was wondering how the dog knows the difference.

Once the leave it is under stimulus control, you can lure again, right?

  • @burninforyou Good question! :) You are right this can sometimes screw some dogs over if you are going to lure and then do this exercise in between. That is not advised. As you can confuse the dog, but it makes training less stressful if they have a default of stand calmly (or just hang out) until it's obvious we are working together. Usually a dog only needs this exercise done once or twice as a pup, and then your ready to go.

  • @burninforyou You can see how terrible it would be to punish a dog for trying to get your treats- you can really ruin their luring ability by doing that. This is also an impulse control exercise, and so can help with luring for dogs that are aroused by food. If they can learn to be calm around food first, then when they follow the lure they are not too over aroused to learn. With a shy dog you dont want to do this exercise, as you can teach them to keep away from you...

  • and again it sucks sometimes to make videos on youtube, because you know there is always some vital info left out, but at least I am getting it out bit by bit...

  • Good stuff!

  • I send all these video's on to my friends with puppies

  • After I do the 'leave it' my dog doesn't go for the treat anymore and I can't really teach her any tricks D:

  • oh my goodness Bogart is sooooo cute :-) thanks for another truly awesome video.

  • I know isn't he?

  • my dog still pulls on leash... i try the tecniques of ur videos and still doesnt work... and he always trys to eat grass and his poops ... its a bad habit that i cant correct and its sooooo frustrating and discusting.... please help!!!! i will really appreciate that.... =)

    asking help from mexico.... =)

  • hm... maybe you can use the poop to train him! Just kidding, haha.

Sounds like he is food motivated since he wants to eat poop. I would just keep trying to find the right treats to use as he seems to prefer poop. Check out my leave it video, teach him the word leave it, and then tell him leave it when he is looking at poop.

  • @kikopup yeahh... he is food motivated... but he eats poop when im not at home... at first i thought that he does that (the poop and grass thing) for anxiety, so i decided to give him more excersice, now I go on a bike but still doesnt work, his trainers use a choke collar but i dont like it, besides it seems that doesnt work.

Could it be about the food? i really like the methods you use, so ill do whatever you recommend.

pd. he is 8 months old aussy and so hyper

    tnx again :)

  • @kdhauad You could try victoria stilwells method, of adding foods to his diet that make the poop taste horrible. I think she used banana, but you have to use that in moderation because it can make them sick if you use too much. Also try getting the leave ti command working really well with positive training on food, and then try doign it with poop. If you do it with his own poop hopefully he would learn to leave it alone when youre not there. Combined with a yukky taste that should do it.

  • if your dog eats grass and poop, that's a strong indication he isn't getting what he needs from his dogfood. Know that even popular, expensive and 'veterinary recommended' food might actually be of a horrible quality, containing little but waste products from corn production and the like - research and find a better brand of dogfood in your area. Supplement with extra root vegetables, peas and the like if your dog still eats grass. Also get a vet check in case he has a medical problem.

  • Great video, thanks! :D

  • Love it! I think I saw the chihuahua before and you added on?... or maybe he was in another video. Really great information and so much better than saying "no" etc.. It's really great to see these dogs learning. Such smart puppies!

  • @wmlgts I thought that too.

  • what treats do you use, and what kind of puppy food should i get. i'm getting a sheprador on thursday. also if i dont wanna get my dog dog food. how should i cook meat. because, my family is very strict about dog food. they think dog food is bad and that old fashioned meat is good.

  • @MonteyCarlo92081 great info on dog feeding at yourpurebredpuppy com. I have only found one good brand of kibble in europe, called ANF, and only some flavours of that one (lamb and chicken). The rest have ingredients that are questionable.

If you go for real meat, then either only barely cook it, or give it raw. Vegetables are good too!

  • both you and zak's training video give me all the inspiration I need =D you're both awsome

  • thanks :) Although I don't use positive punishment to train dogs...

  • @kikopup that's what cool with you both, you have distinct way to train, but you both have results

  • @kikopup I think your methods and videos are way better than Zak's!

  • AWESOME VIDEO

i love watcing them and learning from them

  • Love your videos.
