BAWNANWNANWANSABANWNAANA Now for those of you who didn't quite catch that, here it is slower. BANWANWNNASNAANWNSANNANA Now here's some different patterns for that ABWBABSBABWABABBABABWA.
There are some rarities who can always think faster than they play. Shawn's undoubtedly one of the best of them.. obviously. Soooo much control with his art. Deeply(?) self-composed. Too bad his health just wouldn't comform.
CONCLUSION: Musicians like Gilbert, Shawn Lane, BucketHead , Satch , Vai etc.. are in the Olympics of guitar playing...the rest of us are in the Special Olympics.
im sorry but his hands are not real. A.I? maybe. lol id love to herman Li try that, seing as he cant play his own licks, that would be hilarous. this guy is a god.
i love how, when he is describing the lick with 2 fingers, that he says it is the most comfortable and natural way to play.then he goes off at the speed of light!!!!
You are way ahead of yourself if you cannot pick up what he is playing here. You do not need a tab, grab a guitar and keep playing back when he plays slowly Watch his fingers.
Train your ear and don't be lazy. - or else your playing will always sound robotic.
Paul Gilbert said it best. Shawn Lane is just terrifying. I mean, yeah, when he plays it slow we should be able to figure it out. But god damn that is fast.
did he say all lydian pattern? at the beginning. I swear this guy and dimebag darrell share the same musical style. Dminished patterns with fingering that stays the same as you go up the strings. Its hard to say... Like if you know alot of pantera solos dimes stuff islike this, And blues. BUt thats obvious... Diminshed licks are pretty hard to spot
Nah it was augmented patterns mostly, the get up a augmented pattern and yeah watch this video closly you can see the style is within the augmented scale. For example, the huge stretch he does are 3/4 frets per finger apart, most relevant to the augmented pattern.
Yeah, Dime used the kind of style you described a lot. The beginning of the Cowboys From Hell solo is like this for those of you who don't know what he's talking about. However I think that Shawn's playing is much more diverse and complicated, not to say that Dime wasn't a great guitarist.
Yeah, Dime liked using wide symmetrical licks as well, like in 3:23 of Domination. They both liked using their whammy bars and always kept vibrato. Their phrasing was excellent too. For me, they are the only two guitarists who ever really evoked any emotion from me with their guitar solos. And they're both gone. :( R.I.P. Shawn and Dime
Don't get me wrong I like some of Dime's music but comparing the two is a bit silly, Shawn being a fusion player with completely different phrasing and musical style, and Dime being a metal guitarist. I've never seen Dime play any wide interval licks like Shawn, because let's face it, he couldn't.
Obviously, yeah, they are two completely different styles. But I'm only explaining the small qualities I like that they both share.
Dimebag does play wide interval licks, but not in the same way or speed as Shawn. In Domination, Dime plays fairly fast 12-15-18 stretches, in Cowboys From Hell 20-15-12 ..etc. Shawn is definitely in a league of his own though.
in Darrell's defense, check "Throes of rejection" solo-section, i'd say thats some of his most "out" sounding stuff, lots of stetches and interesting grouping. But he does not come close like you said.
yngwie have to live 400-500 years more to learn to play jazz of fusion and build shawns guitar skills and i am not sure that even after 500 years yngwie would learn it.
I agree with what you say, but just wanted to add that I dont feel that macalpine and vai's sounds are necessarily bad - just evolutionary of the technology and sounds of the time. We are so spoiled in this day and age with the available sounds of competing manufacturers that it's easy to write off the various tones of mid 90s musicians.
man i heard that song and like the way he does those parts are usualy for more evely themed songs but he is able to make such good use of those darker notes that they mean intirerly something else, that is one extreemly talented guy right at first look no question asked! i even fav it righ away (and i listen to stuff like CoF and Behemoth to Spastic inc and some vai songs!) even if far from my style its still awsome for any one!
dude shawn is about 20000000 times betetr then malmsteen i bet if shawn wanted he could play malmsteen stuff while he was sleeping malmsteens good but shawn ide say is the best guitarist/shredder that ever lived no one has come close to him
to bad there's no infinity key on your keyboard (mine neather :P) i wish i could even remotely start playing again seriously... i had no internet for... a year and pretty much drowned in my old cd's for so long... i can redo the same riff differently for 5 mins... not much phase in a song that creates... but this video reminds me of the different atmospheres possible by mankind! i suggest rewatching this vid once in a while, its like a reset button on the startdard music to put some freshness!

How can someone so educated in music not know he's playing a diminished scale.
All things asside this video is excellent.
azkeyz 2 years ago
I think he knows it's diminished but, the the fingering of it is odd.
zom1111 2 years ago 12
Well it's not really a diminished lick.
First first fingering like two minor triads stacked on top of each other.(I'm talking about the lick with stretches, no the first with only 2 fingers)
Second fingering are more like augmented triads, also stacked on different strings.
It's kinda difficult to place theory on such things, those licks are inspired from the intervallic playing of Mister Holdsworth.

But I'm not crazy about his overall sound.

Doesn't have the same soul and focus as a Holdsworth.
Just my opinion.
