  • 3:30 - 3:53 o_o ....do his fingers even have bones in them????? haha damn he is simply incredible! he was a genius in every sense of the word, i regret so much that i never had the pleasure of meeting him...

  • You know you are good when you can turn a boring old ass pentatonic lick into a crazy expressional orgasm (sort to speak)

  • @3:40 - "Thats a very unusual pattern, you'll go crazy with that." FUCKING RIGHT this whole shits crazy Master Lane!!!

  • RIP my dear apple dumpling.

  • BAWNANWNANWANSABANWNAANA Now for those of you who didn't quite catch that, here it is slower. BANWANWNNASNAANWNSANNANA Now here's some different patterns for that ABWBABSBABWABABBABABWA.

  • @Iluvbuckethead1 It's hilarious sometimes. Especially around 3:45 he keeps talking whilst he's already playing. Cracked me up.

  • when that guitar tilts up, you're gonna see some serious shit.

  • @CaptainAshra hahahahahaha so true!

  • Does he hybrid pick the two finger lick?

  • @huashuashuashu

No he just picks it normally, picking the first note in each group of four if I'm not mistaken.

  • @huashuashuashu nope.

  • There are some rarities who can always think faster than they play. Shawn's undoubtedly one of the best of them.. obviously. Soooo much control with his art. Deeply(?) self-composed. Too bad his health just wouldn't comform.

  • what scale is he using in this solo?

  • @yogsothoth2099

Lot's of, as he's playing through the chords., but the main here would be Dminor i'd say, as it is the "tonality".

  • the scary thing is that is one of his easiest solos

  • CONCLUSION: Musicians like Gilbert, Shawn Lane, BucketHead , Satch , Vai etc.. are in the Olympics of guitar playing...the rest of us are in the Special Olympics.

  • Some of the most insane techniques, and insane finger stretches I've ever seen.

  • Pause at 3:44 his index finger looks like its broken,

also that doesnt look like a human hand anymore lol

  • just 2 fingerrrrrrrrrrsssssssss!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome!!

  • wow he kicks ass i think found my new idol

  • yes....i get it now....i suck...haha

  • at 3:50 it doesnt even look like hes picking to get all these notes. im a drummer but this is facinating! lane your the best! more more more!

  • man i love this solo! this is the best video ever!

  • such a control over the guitar. unreal guitar playing.

  • The wide interval lick sounds dark when it is played slowly.

  • yeah I think he has Heard of , ...Allan ,. holdsworth ?

  • 3:40 that wasnt necessary :)))

  • that lick at 1:16 sounds so much like something michael keene from the faceless would write..I feel like he was influenced by Lane

  • you sir are a troll... get off our internet.

  • Comment removed

  • ditto includao. dude was phenomenal.

  • true genius. one of the most inspiring musicians of our generation. the master of the guitar

  • I think he knows it's diminished but, the the fingering of it is odd.

  • Well it's not really a diminished lick.

First first fingering like two minor triads stacked on top of each other.(I'm talking about the lick with stretches, no the first with only 2 fingers)

Second fingering are more like augmented triads, also stacked on different strings.

It's kinda difficult to place theory on such things, those licks are inspired from the intervallic playing of Mister Holdsworth.

  • he is bringing it down to your level mate.

  • of course he knows its dimished

  • LOL at the obvious Herman Li trolls

  • I know its so ridiculous it could never be anything more than comedy.

  • i hope you're kidding because herman would explode in the presence of this guy

  • no more like Herman Li is no Shawn Lane

  • NO one is no Shawn lane

  • Succesful troll is succesful

  • @Kovaji LOL

  • I love that riff @ 0:28

you can make tons of different rythm feels with it. Sets of 4,5 or 6 notes or whatever else.

the one he plays is in 4th

  • everytime i hear shawn lane, i get scared, his music was all just sooo scary good it gave me goosebumps

  • Does anyone know what DvD this is from?

  • 3:44

He jsut keeps talking like it's nothing! XD

But this man was a true genious, rest in peace.

  • im sorry but his hands are not real. A.I? maybe. lol id love to herman Li try that, seing as he cant play his own licks, that would be hilarous. this guy is a god.

  • what dvd is this from?

  • i love how, when he is describing the lick with 2 fingers, that he says it is the most comfortable and natural way to play.then he goes off at the speed of light!!!!

  • That's a really nice looking guiitar. And his tone is just perfect.

  • You are way ahead of yourself if you cannot pick up what he is playing here. You do not need a tab, grab a guitar and keep playing back when he plays slowly Watch his fingers.

Train your ear and don't be lazy. - or else your playing will always sound robotic.

  • Paul Gilbert said it best. Shawn Lane is just terrifying. I mean, yeah, when he plays it slow we should be able to figure it out. But god damn that is fast.

  • I love how the harmony in his playing is so rich, yet he makes it sound so natural and fitting.

truly our lives are richer for having witnessed such a beautiful talent.

    Sadly missed by everyone. RIP

  • does anyone have the tab for this video?

  • anybody know what scale he is using at the very end when he explains the down bending? I think its the blues scale but im not entirely sure.

  • Crab hand!

  • "You can go crazy with that" No shit, haha, damn

  • well he can, i dont know about me!

  • holy shit, stretch armstrong there.

  • did he say all lydian pattern? at the beginning. I swear this guy and dimebag darrell share the same musical style. Dminished patterns with fingering that stays the same as you go up the strings. Its hard to say... Like if you know alot of pantera solos dimes stuff islike this, And blues. BUt thats obvious... Diminshed licks are pretty hard to spot

  • Nah it was augmented patterns mostly, the get up a augmented pattern and yeah watch this video closly you can see the style is within the augmented scale. For example, the huge stretch he does are 3/4 frets per finger apart, most relevant to the augmented pattern.

  • Yeah, Dime used the kind of style you described a lot. The beginning of the Cowboys From Hell solo is like this for those of you who don't know what he's talking about. However I think that Shawn's playing is much more diverse and complicated, not to say that Dime wasn't a great guitarist.

  • Yeah, Dime liked using wide symmetrical licks as well, like in 3:23 of Domination. They both liked using their whammy bars and always kept vibrato. Their phrasing was excellent too. For me, they are the only two guitarists who ever really evoked any emotion from me with their guitar solos. And they're both gone. :( R.I.P. Shawn and Dime

  • Don't get me wrong I like some of Dime's music but comparing the two is a bit silly, Shawn being a fusion player with completely different phrasing and musical style, and Dime being a metal guitarist. I've never seen Dime play any wide interval licks like Shawn, because let's face it, he couldn't.

  • Obviously, yeah, they are two completely different styles. But I'm only explaining the small qualities I like that they both share.

Dimebag does play wide interval licks, but not in the same way or speed as Shawn. In Domination, Dime plays fairly fast 12-15-18 stretches, in Cowboys From Hell 20-15-12 ..etc. Shawn is definitely in a league of his own though.

  • @0ptriX

12-15-18, 20-15-12? Dude, those aren't wide interval licsk. Those are pretty standard when playing even simple blues.

  • in Darrell's defense, check "Throes of rejection" solo-section, i'd say thats some of his most "out" sounding stuff, lots of stetches and interesting grouping. But he does not come close like you said.

  • how did he not ruin his fingers?!

  • Yeah wtf?!?!?

  • what a god

  • Shawn didnt care much about technique he made music thats what he was all about...

but i love how he kicks the big mouth comercial guitarists....the augmented pattern :))))

  • The part near the end with the lovely vibrato is just delicious; especially the down bends.

  • 3:42-3:53... wtf

  • I have never seen or heard stuff like this before.

  • 15 secs in, look at that augmented pattern descending, makes it look fucking easy.

  • very helpful lesson i learned the instrumental

  • As Paul Gilbert mentioned, Lane can perform phrases that you would think are tapped, but somehow, he manages to play it with one hand.

    Incredible

  • And I thought the stretches in "For the Love of God" and "Speed Metal Symphony," were bad. Sheesh.

  • they are bad...but some of lane's stuff..i have to admit..surpasses some of the stuff becker has come up with...

even though jasons my bigger inspiration =)..i still love shawn

  • :)))))))))))

  • in paul gilberts own words, shawn lane, the most terafying guy of all time.

  • "It's kind of an augmented scale, it's like, BLRBLBLRLBLRLBRLBRLBLBRLBRLRLB."

    Damn you, Shawn. Damn you.

  • yngwie have to live 400-500 years more to learn to play jazz of fusion and build shawns guitar skills and i am not sure that even after 500 years yngwie would learn it.

  • Wah.. 3:17 that is a crazy stretch.

There go my hopes of being able to play that solo.. :(

  • Unmatched creativity and ability...truly GOD'S gift...R.I.P. SHAWN and thank you MASTER!!!

  • his scales blow my mind

  • Shawn is the greatest!

  • those little pentatonic bends he showed at the end were just amazing

  • better then yngwie, and not to mention faster. also yngwie cant make me soil myself

  • And a better teacher.

  • yngwie's souless noodling blows chunks.

  • Yngwie Malmsteen's got your chunks, whatever your name is...

  • only an idiot says lane is good and malmsteen sucks...

    they're both awesome...

  • He was from another planet. I don't really care about his shredding, but his creativity is on a par with Miles Davis, Coltrane or Zappa.

    Shawn was a genius.

  • HAHAHA, and on the g3 dvd live in denver, Frank Zappa has a quote, "yngwie is a remarkable guitarist."

just for all the yngwie haters...

  • Oh, right, what is he going to say? "Yngwie blows ass?" Yeah, that'd sound professional.

  • id kill my own mother to have him as a teacher

  • SL has great technique.

But I'm not crazy about his overall sound.

It sounds kind muddy and harsh and overdone in Macalpine/Vai kind of way.

Doesn't have the same soul and focus as a Holdsworth.

    Just my opinion.

  • I agree with what you say, but just wanted to add that I dont feel that macalpine and vai's sounds are necessarily bad - just evolutionary of the technology and sounds of the time. We are so spoiled in this day and age with the available sounds of competing manufacturers that it's easy to write off the various tones of mid 90s musicians.

  • shawns better then malmsteen. even if they where the same skillwise, shawn puts more feeling into his music and every solo he plays sounds different

  • that's because yngview plays to be cool.

shawn plays to be saturated in music.

  • Godlike ...

  • Godlike ... PG, Vai, Malmsteen can't even closed to him (technically)...

  • crapped myself at 2.55-3.00

  • i recognize the phrigian/lydian modes. some of this shit just baffles me though, can someone tell me the modes he uses?

  • diminished, augumented, harmonic minor, pentatonic

  • hoyl shit...un fucking real

  • man i heard that song and like the way he does those parts are usualy for more evely themed songs but he is able to make such good use of those darker notes that they mean intirerly something else, that is one extreemly talented guy right at first look no question asked! i even fav it righ away (and i listen to stuff like CoF and Behemoth to Spastic inc and some vai songs!) even if far from my style its still awsome for any one!

  • I love this guy. He genuinely cares about people learning from him, unlike Malmsteen who's all about posing on his videos.

  • dude shawn is about 20000000 times betetr then malmsteen i bet if shawn wanted he could play malmsteen stuff while he was sleeping malmsteens good but shawn ide say is the best guitarist/shredder that ever lived no one has come close to him

  • No man, he's not about 20000000 better than Malmsteen, he's like 999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 times better than malmsteen

  • nah man hes alot better so better then malmsteen that if i were to type how much hes better would be here for ever

  • to bad there's no infinity key on your keyboard (mine neather :P) i wish i could even remotely start playing again seriously... i had no internet for... a year and pretty much drowned in my old cd's for so long... i can redo the same riff differently for 5 mins... not much phase in a song that creates... but this video reminds me of the different atmospheres possible by mankind! i suggest rewatching this vid once in a while, its like a reset button on the startdard music to put some freshness!

  • speed of light....

  • Looks so strange putting on no vibrato with his fretting hand! Must take a lot of discipline to constantly using the tremelo

  • yes, is better than malmsteen but are 2 differents styles

  • shawn lanes style is much more diversal then yngwie. ive never heardyngwie play anything outside of the harmonic minor scales except for a few times he played blues songs.

  • Absolute Genius

  • Shades of Holdsworth and old Jean Luc Ponty...

  • shawn is superior to malmsteen in like everyway lol, na, malmsteen is good just such a awful person

  • no!

  • im sure malmsteen could play the same thing but its 2 different styles

  • Gregory Peckory? I'll not ask...

  • LOL! It's from a Zappa tune.

  • Have you been attacked by a rage of Hunchmen?

  • Yes, much faster, and cleaner, and infinately more musical intelligence (plus he was a nice guy).

  • He is very fast!! i think he is faster than Malmsteen!!
