We're not going back to a gold standard. The only thing a gold standard was supposed to do was limit the money supply. That did not happen. The USA still borrowed and spent on non productive enterprises like the Vietnam War before Nixon closed the gold window. Nobody trusts the USA even if it decided to go back to a gold standard tomorrow.

If it did happen, everyone holding USD including Americans would just dump the USD for the commodity and that would be it. Not very efficient for trade.

Wasn't there a movie where this happened? Called "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore. The kindly honest banker whose bank was going under in the 30's Depression attempted suicide but was visited by his angel who took him to see Christmas Past and Christmas Future but without him ever being born. You can protect yourself by demanding documents from the bank and until they can show you those documents, you are NOT required to move or pay a mortgage. If you establish a contract and that contract is LOST by the person that made it, YOU do not have to honor it and you OWN that house until the BANK CAN PROVE OTHERWISE IN A COURT. KNOW THE LAW AND PROTECT YOURSELF...get a free house in the process. :)

There's several ways to avoid that or prove a contract invalid if you know a little about Maritime Admiralty Law and a LOT about Constitutional Law. Most lawyers are improperly trained and don't know HOW to handle a courtroom that is under Constitutional Jurisdiction NOT Maritime Admiralty jurisdiction. Educate yourself, you can be BETTER than a "lawyer."
