@sebz61 /check out a player named sonny landreth, type in his name in utube and listen to em, he has always used finger picks, like mark knopfler, chet atkins, and so many mo, lol..jerry douglas/dobro
There isnt A Johnny Winter song, video or concert that wasn't worth my time, energy or presence. I saw Johnny many times, in the '70's, '90's and the last time was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at the Texas Club. Worth every bit of hell I had to go through to make that concert.
I love the man. He is, in my opinion the ONLY white bluesman. And I know there's quite a bunch out there trying! My eyes get wet every time I here the song - despite the bass player being apparently not familiar with the eight bar blues that night.
@TheTicoFeo I can always recognize a Johnny Winter song BEFORE HE SINGS. HIS GUITAR PLAYING IS ONE OF A KIND! There are others who want and do try, but will never come close to this white boy blues the he does. Keep on keepin on Johnny.
@TheTicoFeo That's a pretty prejudiced statement. I will agree that he is the BLACKEST -WHITE boy that ever lived and NOBODY captures raw gut bucket Blues any better White-Black or Chartreuse. Peter Green, Roy Buchanan, Rory Gallagher and there are a few other contemporaries that should get the nod as well.
Informally, blues players "know" or "almost know" 3/4 of all the blues songs, it's the one song structure that is durable and predictable enough to make it possible for two guys who just met to put together a listenable song instantly. I agree with 'dakklub,' that this is way more authentic than 'SuperFirewire 1" would imagine. This was really fun to watch; it shows much more of Winter's faithful companion Randy Jo's chops than you ordinarily get to see. Way-cool Ampeg acrylic bass, also!!
Big Bill Broonzy wrote the song, need to correct myself. Little Walter wrote the best version with Otis Spann, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Luther Tucker. That is the best version and the one that hit the charts.
"Key" was written in 1958 by Little Walter. After The American Folk Blues Festival and Clapton recording the song on the Layla album sure everyone in England knew this tune.
The Bass Player is Randy Jo Hobbs, he later joined Johnny's Band did Still Alive and Well, and Saints and Sinners, and John Dawson Winter 111 ... Peace ...
what i was tring to say is, i have video of this bass player playing this song long before this video of him with johnny winter, this was to be a film johnny was trying to make but never panned through, so the bass player was pretending not to know this song to make it look cooler, sorry to say but it is true. But it is all in good fun to make it more enjoyable for us rock fans, it is also a 12 bar yes but not the standered blues change but very very close, "as frank zappa once said.
@SuperFirewire1 Come on, man, count. Key is an EIGHT bar blues tune. Their are a few, How Long Blues is another. The shorter form makes it easier and more challenging at the same time, since the changes come more quickly. And who cares if the bassist knew it or didn't know Key. They did a great jam.
I V IV four screws everyone up. But once the bass player heard it he knew it, musicians can do that on the spot. Looks fake but it wasn't, talented musicians with experience can play over anything. The song is I V IV, I V IV, then the turnaround, most blues songs are I IV V.
@89easygoer I've played over many songs I don't know on the spot live it isn't uncommon. The bassist is good. Never hearing "Key To The Highway" is a bit strange.
This is great BUT!!! It was fake!!! johnny ask's the bass player is he ever heard the song "key to the highway, the bass player says "i never heard that song. Funny how the bass player never heard the song but not only plays it right all the way but plays the exact notes right all the way from start to finish. They was just trying to make it look cool like if it was natural lol. but still i love it
FAKE ?????? ,,,,,This is a no brainer.... its a twelve bar, not hard if you know your stuff. there a number of flubs early on by the B player but who cares a it a JAM. Bass player has some sense of playing he rest is JW. which really is terrific..... demonstrates how well round JW is as a player and singer.
@SuperFirewire1 The Bass player plays the right notes from start to finish? If you got cotton woll in your ears. He does well once he gets into it, but these two hadn't played this song together before.
@christopauls /of all ma fave johnny tunes, this one is prob 1 or 2 with me. Sure, the bass playa didn't know johnny's nuances, but, he did a great job and he played with Johnny many times after this session./wynn
This ....this here.....is WHY Johnny Winter.... is the all-time blues guitar master. No one else does this like this. J.W. did it all....... accoustic, slide, & anything else there is to do in blues.
@bakedsushi You should change your name to Shit For Brains. Stevie was directly influenced by Johnny and he was in his own right a Masterful guitarist! Go do your homework before you shoot your damn fool mouth off next time boy!
@ONENIGGER2ANOTHER I viewed all if not many that arent here. I also know from the source that SRV loved and listened to Johnny but more of a interest on how cool he used the fretboard and improved his speed. SRV spoke of Albert King and Lightnin Hopkins more than Johnny. He said "those guys werent fast but they made the notes count". I doubt Big Jim Vaughn owned any JOhnny Winter records but I will ask Jimmy Lee in four months when I see him again at my dads office.
listened to.him... learned from him... had the great pleasure of jamming with him... no one can compare to his screaming Texas blues... argue if you'd like... I'll never be swayed ;)
Randy Jo Hobbs, bassist, nice play on this tune, I so wish you would have been able to have lived longer to appreciate all your work in life, Randy, notice I didn't say dude, that would have been so impersonal, Randy you rocked this song, and in life you lived your fullest, and I want to wish you the best in life, post mortem, dude, you fuckin rocked, in your life, you have nothing to look
It's an 8 bar not a 12 bar structure

The bass sucks. Who is this guy and how did he score a jam with Johnny? ......That plexiglass bass can be had for under two hundred bucks.
