The two rivers I hear most about in the Eastern US are the Gauley and the Russel Fork. Which is tougher of those two, and are there any other classs 5's that are run commercially?
Great video. I'm actually doing the Upper tomorrow. Questions: what's the name of the music you set the video to? And what is the #1 rafting in the US?
I'm doing this in september and I've never been before. lol, the vid made me a little nervous :) my uncle wanted to do a class 5 for his bday so that's what we're doing... some assure me that i wont die :D
I'd recommend doing the lower/middle sections of the Gauley if you have never been before. I'm pretty sure the lower and middle sections have a class 5. It's very fun and exciting. I'm doing the upper gauley in sept. too but I've been many times before.
I absolutely love this place. I've been coming here for like 5 years and every year, it seems as if the trip gets better and better. It's the one thing I actually look forward to every year :]
Ive done the upper gauley i especially love the bid apartment sized undercut boulder anyways it was awesome only different was that i did it in a duckie i swam the 1st 2nd and 3rd the rest i got used to it I also did the upeer and lower new. all i got to say is if you havent rafted before do it cus its awesome.
In a 14' boat, we only had swimmers in Fuzzy Box (intentionally done) and two that fell out in a surf hole. No major rapids ate us up but damn it was exhausting to do the entire 23 miles in one day. I'll be back in 2008.
When did you go? I just went This past weekend, 9/22 and on 9/23, we did the Upper Gauley. It was a blast! It was the second time I had EVER been on a raft. I loved it! We're thinking about going this weekend to do the entire trip. How was it?
I went 9/10. I loved the Lower. Bad thing is there's two big dead water spots where you get major downtime. There's some big, challenging rapids but nothing as technical as the Upper's best.
If you really like surfing/play spots, I wouldn't recommend the marathon though cause you have to rush to get through the entire river. If you want to see the entire river, I'd recommend splitting the river up into two days so you can explore all the nooks and crannies.
I just went rafting there for the first time in my life earlier today.
The boat I was on flipped over at the Insignificant rafting bit and I, of course, fell into the water. I couldn't swim so I floated and had to be picked up a couple minutes later by another boat of people. SCARY!!
I know an outfitter doesn't want to show clips of peeps popping outta the boat, but that's what everyone wants to see, and it happens a good bit!! Other than that, great video - well produced, music fits it well (coulda been hard rock, but this probably serves a wider audience). Well done! Makes me want to go back!
Ah man! I want to guide this river! What companies mainly run it? I'm from Washington so I am on the White Salmon and the Wenatchee mostly...

The lack of carnage in this video is somewhat disappointing... :D But the music is so perfectly ominous for this river...!

Good video - only quibble is that it doesn't show any carnage, and you don't take a raft down the Upper Gauley without someone taking a swim.
Going back for Gauley Season 2007 in September - 6th year in a row.
