I wouldn't find this useful. I happen to HATE things on my desktop. I keep it clean and clear of annoying folders and files. Why not a menu bar item for mac users? If Box.net offers a menu bar app and an iPhone app, I'd switch because I HATE Dropbox's UI, it's ugly.
@athiwatc you can preview and edit files in your Dropbox on the web and on your iPhone.
box.net is much better than dropbox because it's main feature is on the web. So it does not only sync, but it let yo edit and preview content on the web.

Use Sugarsync or Dropbox. They are free. Box sync is not.

UPDATE: Didn't know they had an iPhone app! Cool. But still prefer a menu bar app over a desktop folder.
