@kirkenbunken Bro , I am right there with you in the 90"s if you wanted to see jerry nice and loose,ya know having fun you had to go and catch his band. The grateful dead in the 90"s were really pretty weak.My favorite time to see the garcia band was the late 70"s early 80"s, ya know the old 2 shows 1 night . Ticket"s were like $7 bucks, doses were given out or at most $1. Those were some good times,i really, really miss them,i would not trade those nights 4 anything.
Two months after this show I had the wonderful experience of diving with Jerry in Kona Hawaii! 5 hours on the boat, and he even fished my hat out of the ocean after it blew of my head!
I was there too! With my then friend Suzi Wong Korobase, the Lanker Sis, the Paper brothers of Minnesota, and I remember clearly Jacques Derrida and Bourdieu rocking till the joint caught fire. This is stronger than Luang Prabang grass in a bong
I was at this show in the front row. Bruce's parents were on my left and a dude in a wheelchair to my right. I made sure that the guy in the wheelchair had a great view throughout the first set and during the break he gave me some liquid goodness ;) for being so kind. What a night that was.
Last Jerry Show I saw - front row - what a great night! Sure do miss those times, I now watch with my sons and try to explain, but I just can't find the words. The "experience" was where it was at! Peace...
I was at this show and just had a blast. Yes it is sad to know that JGB was the band the helped fund Jerrys and johns heroin habits. But damn they did some great stuff!
I was at this show. Jerry side up a bit. We were tripping some stuff that made everyone look like they had waves coming off them. Ahhh...those were the days. Many great shows in Hampton, and many great shows with Bruuuce! The first time I saw him was as opener for the Dead in 90 in Raleigh. He then came out and did a few songs sitting in a chair playing accordian. Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories!
jerry is still the best after all these years. In the 70's I used to sleep out for tickets on the sidewalk of the New Haven Collesium. The best shows back then. They blew up the ole colly a few months ago. Seen all the big shows there in the 70's & 80's but Jerry was the man..
This is pure Jerry, and is an outstanding performance. Hornsby adds his flair for one solo, but otherwise this is all Jerry's and he is perfect. Thank God for Jerry Garcia and a great big thank you to zncstr for sharing this with us.
True, but it's ironic that even in those later years that, often, Garcia's most focused and solid playing was with the JGB. Even in 1994, Garcia's playing is just much more assertive and driven with the JGB than with the Dead, which given what you said (which I know is true) is a bit surprising.
Yeah I'm not saying they didn't have their moments (though nothing near what the Dead ever achieved), but I always have trouble listening to them knowing that he used the cash to f**k himself up more, hence curtialing the magic he created with the Dead. I haven't heard any '94 JGB, but I do know a tour was canceled after he collapsed in the half time break of one of their shows.
Yep that would be phoenix.... only jgb show i had the chance to see and he "had the flu" and quit after first set.... he might have only gotten a few songs in actually.... don't recall exactly...he doesn't look well in this...but sounds and plays pretty damn good. and bruuuuuuuce... he's always on....though i can't say i'm a fan of his accordion... :P
JGB was an incredible live act, an outlet for Jerry, a chance to play with a friend, etc. They release all those pure Jerrys cause people love that great music
Each to their own. I didn't mean to start a debate, but this video just reminded me of how ill Jerry was sometimes, and arguably not least due to his involvment with this band..
I have 2 say that Bruce gave Jerr that kick in the ass he needed up there. He is kinda lathargic until he let's Hornsby take a chorus. Hornsby plays great, as usual, and then Jerry takes the next solo after he's done singing at about the 5 minute mark in this, and he wakes up and starts really playing. It's no coincidence. If you look, Jerry even turns up a bit, so he can play out during his solo, and as soon as he does this he's a different player.
