Really?? Okay I'll break it down.

1. One of their men was killed.

2. Fog of war + Jungle environment. I didn't serve in Vietnam, but when you are in a firefight YOU DONT ask questions.

3. They didn't know it was just one person/thing. It could of been 3 men, a squad, or an entire battalion attacking them.

Though someone would have called 'cease fire' sooner :P

With that said, (same with the raid on the camp), they stood right out in the open while firing weapons with muzzle flashes. In other words, they were vunlnerable to any in-direct fire, and easily picked off by a better concealed enemy. Any enemies to the left or right, outside of their fields of fire, could have easily flanked them as well.

Interesting thing I read on IMDB regarding the shot that stuns Blaine. Because they changed the Predator concept during filming, the first shot is a holdover from that concept. Apparently the Predator had some sort of a spear gun type weapon. You can see a solid looking projectile hit Blaine in the shoulder. Who knows how accurate IMDB is, but seems sensible enough. Interesting trivia, either way.

@surridosmile That is a General Electric M134 minigun specially modified for hand held use. It fires 7.62mm rounds at 1250 rpm and has a 550 round ammo box. The same gun was further modified and used in Terminator 2. Actual M134's are typically mounted on vehicles and fire at 3000 rpm.

@xandror The rate of fire actually had to be greatly scaled back for Ventura to fire it. This was so that blanks wouldn't be used up as quickly and that the recoil( yes, even blanks have recoil) would be manageable while still being able to use the minigun from a standing position. I also found out that the military did come up with an experimental model like the one seen here, but it wasn't practical enough for large-scale use. at least that is what i read. makes sense to me though.
