@Dreez76 Most people I've talked to or read review online with him in movies always say he gives a good performance, so I don't know if he's nderestimated or not. But it would be nice see him in a leading role soon
Thanks for posting this. I came here searching for this scene. I think it is Ed Harris at his best. And I doubt anyone else could have done this as well. Fu&%in A ! I love when casey says "Murder's a sin" and Ed says "It depends on who you do it to". I'm going to use that as a subscript when I sign e-mails.
One thing about this scene doesn't make sense. He says it's the first and only time he planted evidence on someone, then why did he have an ounce of heroin on him at the scene? He wouldn't have been carrying...
Still an incredible film, but that's a major inconsistency. Admittedly, he could have gone to an evidence room or something, but he doesn't describe it that way.
@Ciaran646 first of all, it's not a "major" inconsistency. he could have heroin back in the squad car for a number of reasons, the simplest of which being that he confiscated it from a small time crook earlier in the day.
secondly, of course harris' character is lying about that being the only time he's bent the rules. that's the point. his vitriol makes this clear. we find out what kind of guy he really is in the scenes that follow.
@macnolds He'd have had an ounce in the car? I doubt that.
Fair enough, maybe not a major inconsistensy, it doesn't really affect the quality of the film, but still, I don't think the point of the scene was necessarily that this wasn't the first itme he'd bent the rules. I think it actually is supposed to be the first time, but not the only time.
Not only was this entire movie outstanding, but as others here have noted --- this scene was one of the most harrowing and impeccably performed ones throughout the film. I adore Ed Harris, and here is precisely why. Casey Affleck did an amazing job as well of course, he had such a challenging role - hats off to him really - but man....Ed's scene here get's me every time. Love it. Bravo.
@hvite...should this have gotten Ed Harris a Oscar Nomination?.....FUCKIN A! He should have been..when he says that line, DAMN......and Ben A. Should stay behind the camera from now on cause he knocks it out the pAHrck with this one....
I left my Bluray copy of this movie when I moved, and I haven't yet been able to drive back to get along with a few others; and so I came on here for one reason: to find this scene and watch it again.
@mrwho256 Have you by chance read Lehane's novel of the same name? My only problem with the film adaptation is they didn't adequately use Angie Gennaro's character. She's almost nonexistent in the film, and that's just unfortunate because some of the reason I love the Kenzie/Gennaro series is the relationship shared between the two characters.
But yes, Affleck did excellent as director. I also really enjoyed "The Town."
When Ed Harris says "Fucking A!" - that is truly priceless!

Such brilliant performances by both of them.

@honarmin Yes, they did an excellent job, as did everyone involved. So surprised to hear Ben Affleck was directing, and he did an outstanding job

@honarmin No, I've been meaning to find/read the book, as I've heard it's pretty good. And yeah, The Town was great as well.

@honarmin just did the exact same thing. the way harris delivers the "lay me down" line is just jarring.
