How do you lengthen the notes? I'm making a song right now (or at least I'm trying to), but when I input a note it only plays for split-second.

The notes played are of a different soundfont. A differents soundfont can change the instuments (Faces, Objects, Ect.) How they sound, How long they play, how loud they are, pretty much in any way. The default soundfont is the normal mario one everyone starts with

It starts out as muddling around a lot. Then you start making things you know... then you put two things together that work. Then you put more than that. Then you come up with new ideas of how to do things. Then you have the skill to be more ambitious. And then you do a lot of stuff on the way to something like this. Then lock yourself in a room for 7 days while you work on it.

I used a midi-making software to make my own music some years ago. I still have it, but I never got this good.

You're right about the offset part. You can also offset notes (even if you're not hitting the 5 note limit) so that you can volume control them individually. You see, you can only have one set volume per "line".

They're called "low A" glitch notes. If you place a note on the low A bar on the staff, it glitches and silences any note of that same instrument before it.

He's proven himself in the former, but the fact that we haven't heard anything ORIGINAL from him does not mean he is incapable... any more than someone who plays the saxophone should not be faulted because he hasn't learned to play the cello.

If you can do this, you might have a career in composing for films and games - or at least arranging, since composing also requires creativity, not just the ability to duplicate what you hear. Also, knowledge of the orchestra and its quirks is required. Still, if you can pull off something like this, that should be more than doable for you.

This is good and inpressive, but is it completely fair to the other people who enter the contest?

1. You chose the song.

2. You used a soundfont not available to the public.

3. You won last round.

Separately I guess these wouldn't be a big deal, but I can't help but feel something isn't fair here.

I propose for future contests, the host can't enter and any soundfonts must be available to anyone, that way no one has access to more resources than anyone else.

You'll have the link. b) The contest rules clearly state "Composer users should feel free to use modified soundsets. They need not be provided, you may modify them yourself given that the sounds originate from Mario Paint." c) There is even a provided set for this song...

a) I know Satoshi sent this set to only a few Mario Paint Composers just to test it out (including me, which is how I know this. I saw the list of people in the message).

Concerning B, people may not have the resources, but how hard is it to search on Google for a program? I even mentioned in the intro to my MP+ video, what program I used, and an alternative program for people that use Soundblaster cards.

And as far as knowledge is concerned, I started out with zero using the program..after using it for a while I pretty much know my way around. All you need is motivation and perseverance and anyone can figure this stuff out.

You have a good point there. When I was watching the videos, I kinda felt something was a tad unfair too. And no, it's not because I'm an entrant and am bitter. I was just also thinking that the host shouldn't enter so that no matter what someone 'else' can pick the next song. And about the soundfonts, I think that there should be a few 'set' soundfonts. Maybe 1 or 2 that people can choose from. That way, it's a little more challenging, and a little more fair.
