lol discovery had a robot challnge build off with the same type of design. to me, a rolling leg is basically the same thing as a wheel, or a quarter of a wheel to be more exact. Yes the sensors and such are a challenge, but rolling leg designs are the simplest of leg designs. The fact that it has 6 legs means it's that much more simple. 4 legs requires a balanceing mechanism, 3 requires a more complex one, 2 requires the most complex.

@shyla669 Yeah your right Whegs are easy (when your software can get them into the correct sync) but I think you are missing the advantages of whegs, with a Wheg you have independent control over each allowing you to do things that wheels cannot, i can't even begin to list those as they should be obvious if you think about it

interesting. i find that the NXT is 'cheating' when it comes to lego. i have been a fan of lego for 10 or so years, and the change from the mindstorms to the nxt, however more updated it may be, is a step back from proper mechanics. i can understand how dificult it would be to make something like this, byut i think if you used the mindstorms it would have been more fun, and a much more rewarding process. :)

@TonyW1000 It shouldn't be that hard, it comes with bluetooth coms, but you want to get your hands on Labview from NI it's what the lego software is based only much better and free as a student edition - dig around the NI site and you'll find the form to fill in, they send it on CD only.

@hexitex You've basically copied the robot that Boston Dynamics has made without any credit towards them. Their robot is called RHex. The configuration of the legs and the sensors look pretty identical.

@Shocker9, I dunno the name LHEX kinda implies that this is a copy of RHEX, yes you are correct it is inspired by RHEX, i never tried to claim this a original design. BUT, RHEX wasn't a Boston Dynamics design, it was a University Project that they picked up and called theirs - so who is trying to pull the wool over your eyes- me having a bit of hobby time or Boston Dynamics?

i just got the mindstorms nxt 2.0 and would like th know how you got the motors too stop as soon as it sees somthing all mine does is pulse over and over in a loop until it sees something but it also has to finish all actions in the loop before continuing too the turn around actions. PLEASE REPLY!!!

Erm, Tutorials and Tips 101 (not a good name with a question like this), you would need to buy two nxt kits and a few other bits - you can see what is needed on the site at the end of the video. It was an expensive itch :)

Nice robot, good AI, but you might want to consider making it turn sharper when trying to avoid an obstical. Also, if you are going to use that design for legs, then why not just use wheels? I would expect some strange behavior when the radar gets tilted back like it did a couple of times in the vid.

Wheels, can't climb as well as these legs - this is a Wheg design. Your right turning could be better but this is an old project, others are working on it today and they have improved many aspects - it is one of the most robust lego bots about.
