With regard to Hong Kong, I must say it was a sad day for me. It's always sad to witness European decline all over the world. The handover of Macao by the Portuguese was a sad day too. As you say, an isolated Hong Kong Island was not viable. Actually, Deng Xiaoping told Thatcher: 'Hong Kong will be ours; it depends on you whether it'll be by peaceful of violent means'. I remember the band playing 'Highland Cathedral' and the Chinese soldiers entering the colony... a sad day.

The only territory you can say Spain has no right to hold is the old Portuguese town of Olivenza, taken in 1801. Perhaps when the Muslim invade and subject you to there Rule they're will be a different tone, I hear there already taking over to....like everywhere else, will happen there fast giving the history and the non spanish Andulsions in the south whome will turn on you at a moments notice.

Gibraltar will only become part of Spain if the a majority of the Gibraltarian people vote for that to happen. At present, the overwhelming majority of the Gibraltarian people want to remain a British Overseas Territory.
The Gibraltarians are a determined group of people and would declare independence if the UK ever decided to hand over the Rock without their concent.
Why not respect freedom, democracy and the wishes of the Gibraltarian people to remain British?

Because Gibraltar is causing problems for Spain. It is a tax haven. No country in the world likes tax havens.Also, why are they claiming territorial waters? that is just another annoyance to Spain.Moreover, in true democracy everyone effected should vote, therefore if the Spanish are affected by the acts of the people of Gibraltar then the Spanish and the people of Gibraltar should all vote on the same issues in one single mass.

The sovereignty of the Spanish people wouldn't change if Gibraltar became part of Spain, but the Gibraltarian people's sovereignty would change, so they are the only ones who should have a vote on the issue. y your logic, the people of Great Britain should have a say in determining the sovereignty of Northern Ireland.

Andorra has long respected Spain and France with regards to economic transparency and military defense. The people of Gibraltar have never been sovereign they have always been under control of the UK. How can they give up something they never had? If they were their own country i wouldn't argue, but they are a British over seas territory.

You originally said that the UK should give Gibraltar to Spain. If that ever did happen without the Gibraltarians' consent, the Gibraltarian people would immediately declare independence. I supposed at that point you'd support their wishes and independence?

If the people in Gibraltar really cared about independence they would of done it a long time ago and broke away form the UK like the US. There independent movement is mere attempt to prevent Spanish control. i would support an independent Gibraltar if Spain was claiming it if Gibraltar was independent for the past 100 years, but they did not do that. Spain isn't claiming Cuba or Mexico they are claiming an integral part of the their state.

I didn't say the Gibraltarians wanted independence, I said they'd declare independence from Spain if the UK ever handed them over.
Gibraltar is not an integral part of Spain, they've been separated for the last 300 years and Spain recognises the fact that Gibraltar is not part of its territory. In any case, in a democratic society, self determination should overrides territorial integrity. Societies where sovereignty is imposed on the people by the state are not free.

The answer is simple. the UK gave democratic Hong Kong to the communist Chinese. The British didn't seem to support democracy with them, thus all this support of democracy is nonsense.

Hong Kong was on a 99 years to the UK which expired in 1997. During the talks with China in the 1980s, there was great disquiet in the British government and media about handing over Hong Kong to a communist state. However, if the UK hadn't returned HK to the Chinese, the PLA would have taken it by force, killing many people in the process and removing all of the territory's democracy.
It was seen as better for the people HK to negotiate and save much of their democracy.

Yes this is all true and accurate, but now you must see the hypocrisy of the British with Gibraltar. If the old hong kong treaty was acknowledged then the treaty with the spanish must be acknowledged as well. And if the the British declared war on Argentina over a insignificant island then why not fight a morally justified war against china over democracy in hong kong?
And democracy in hong kong was tolerated for an extended time not saved forever

There is no hypocrisy, the UK respected its treaty with China and it respects the Treaty of Utrecht with Spain.
The UK felt it was possible to liberate the Falkland Islanders in 1982, but if China had invaded Hong Kong, there would have been no way to retake Hong Kong. It was seen as better for the people of Hong Kong to talk to the Chinese. Also, keeping Hong Kong would have meant breaking the treaty with China.

The UK doesn't respect the treaty of utrecht due to the fact that have stated that they would not negotiate without the wishes of the people of Gibraltar. The wishes of the people of Gibraltar are not mentioned in the treaty of utrecht.

The treaty doesn't mention the need to negotiate either, in fact any talks would be on how to cancel the treaty.

the strait of Gibraltar is 14.3 km!! it makes perfect sense that Spanish territory is on the African continent. Also, Ceuta and Melilla have always been tied to the southern Iberian peninsula, the are as Spanish as Andalusia. That is why they are part of the Spanish state, and are citizens and always have been.
British subjects live in Gibraltar, that is why they are a colony. That is the difference.

A minority of them are pure british, for the rest, a lot of Gibraltarians have spanish ancesters (wife's grandmother was from San Roque), you won't find a lot of gibfraltarians with an english family name...
Speaking of ceuta and Mellila, these are colonies too whatever the time it has been conquered. Spanish are colonizing people, it touch their pride to be colonized too.
