Fellow Syd fans wont you take a minute to check out my song? its called "the majority" i wrote it a while ago but i uploaded it the other day. id appreciate your comments its on my profile favourites.
"It meant even less to me than I thought... With a honey plough of yellow, prickly seeds, Clover Honey pots a mystic shining feed." That's what I thought he was singing.
Man was Barret great! No need to say i`m sorry for him. He has so much fans to suit him right even in the afterlife. Thank you Syd for the great music!
when i was in highschool and barely knowing about pink floyd....there was a great debate about 'who was pink floyd'. well i asked an obvious expert, my buddy kurt getchell (wearer of a denim jacket with floyd patches on every stitch) i asked kurt, who is pink floyd, roger or david? without missing a beat he said SYD BARRETT! nuf ced
This isn't the album recording is it? I downloaded mine from a subscription website and it doesnt have that blues solo part in he middle. This sounds a bit rougher and I love it.
@Pepotamo1985 Since I posted that comment I bought the actual album with this version. I had this digital download that I bought a few years ago that was missing half the song. So glad that I checked this out. Thanks for the response.
Good good! Odd to hear of that edit, from what I can gather a lot of Floyd stuff gets hacked to bits in foreign incarnations for no apparent reason. Happy listening.
It's based on an old poem Rilloby Rill by Henry Newbolt, 1912 I think. Check the lyrics compared to the song! Syd was a genius though. Who would have thought of using that sort of obscure inspiration? RIP
@rigatone I just read an article that examined the lyrics to "Octopus" called "Untangling the Octopus". A variety of influences went into this song, but the section from "Rilloby Rill" is the one that was most directly quoted.
@TheOneartist I'm reading 'Syd Barrett: A Very Irregular Head' just now, which is a painstakingly well researched biography and very sympathetically and incisively written. It also quotes several sources but with Syd's enjoyment of old poems and writers like Hilaire Belloc and Lewis Carroll, then you can see where he managed to conjure that whimsical magic into songs from sometimes obscure lyrics!
The best lyric poetry I've ever read. And tailor-made for his Unique melodies and voice. His 'legend' status is not only justified, it's almost Incidental.
@sigmundfloyder And that, my friend, is the self-evident secret to a long and happy life. Unless, of course, you prefer a short and miserable life...in which case, whatever makes you happy.
My personal favorite of Syds! I always feel elated, energized and giddy whenever I hear this song!!! Thanks for including the lyrics, especially since this song has so many!!
@Tyme2Die Syd Barrett's solo albums were never recorded in mono. Only "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", which I agree, the mono is the only way to go. The stereo version sucks on that one.
Mono mixing pretty much ended in 1969. Although most 1968 albums were already geared towards stereo.
I found "Opel" on vinyl today, so happy.

rigatone 1 year ago
@rigatone That's amazing. I wonder why Henry Newbolt was never credited, and why this piece of information isn't more widely known.
After looking it up, the lyrics Syd used were:
"Madam, you see before you stand,
Heigh-ho! never be still!
The Old Original Favourite Grand
Grasshopper's Green Herbarian Band,
And the tune we play..."
It's amazing how seamlessly he worked that into his song.
