This video (along all endo sensei's) shows the beauty of this art that only a practitioner would understand. about reality: is a real situation disarm someone with a machine gun, gun or cannon (!) in his/her hands, pointed right at your head?? check youtube...you'll find many videos of these kind of things...
Even at bjj and Judo Uke have to cooperate in order to nage learn a movement dynamics. This is because most techniques needs to be performed slowly thousands of times. Aikido works but take much more time to get the technique cause you have to learn how to feel ukes body, you need to create a conection. Karate, Kung fu, Jiu Jitsi, judo etc.. doesn't need that conection, there are more easy to learn. I'm sure that, in a real situation would be very difficult touching Endo Shihan.
@miloedo I don't think that anyone would like to be on the receiving end of any high-level martial artist going all out.
The difficult thing with aikido is not being the one who executes the technique. If you're good you won't be in any danger at all. The difficult thing is being the attacker himself. The faster and the more fierce your attack, the harder you will fall. You need a fast reaction speed if you don't want to end up with an elbow in your face.
true master who probably knows aikido is about . some think they can simple start kicking and hitting if their "aiki" "fails" or is not adequte but those are not practicing aikido at all.
i keep hearing this all the time and i hope i wont have to do that myself in a bad situation one must first cleanse ones own mind and self of aggression and the wish for hurt and destruction all the techniques in the world will not help
@Barlow991 The weird thing is that 'of all martial arts' it's typically aikido practisioners who don't seem able to deal with critisism. People forget that the fouder of aikido first practised hard styles for decenia. Knowing what realisitc attacks are. Unlike many practisioners today.
@gerardsollie hmm that sounds pretty stereo-typical of you. if your basis of judgement is that "effectivity" can only be achieved by being "hard" then you may wish to reconsider. for example would be russian systema which stresses calm and awareness in its art all together being "soft".
@gerardsollie regarding being "realistic" in attacks, my understanding of the aikido system is that strikes are categorized into angularity, this one put simply as a straight overhead strike to the head. i doubt that it is purely bullcr*p. I see that the angle is there, the intent to reach the target, the full relaxed body weight in the strike as compared to using only arm with tension. if you see this as ineffective how is it that systema strikes are of the same relaxed composure?
@gerardsollie maybe what you see is that there is no aggression or apparent intent to seriously hurt. I'm not sure if in your opinion you regard this as the most important aspect of the strike, i don't know. but i think for all intensive purposes that it is also "possible" to learn principle from the exercise in the video without the need for "aggression."
@gerardsollie that is most definitely true. However, in my opinion Endo is an inspirational example of being able to rise from hardships in his BUDO or martial way in aikido. He had been diagnosed with a condition with his shoulders from as a result of frequent HARD TRAINING in his youth, this would have stopped him from training in aikido forever.
But because of his love of the art and a good mentor, he has found a way to practice without having to hurt himself at that is what he teaches. :)
@beachsunsetview Like I said. Aikido SEEMS unable to be critisized. Also for an outsider (like me) the attacks Endo handles SEEM poor. However no disrespect to any practisioner of any martial art fro me anymore!! ; ))
@gerardsollie hahahaha don't worry i know a lot of aikido vids that no matter how i think of it is really REALLY bad, il post a couple of links you can check it out. :P

@gerardsollie overall, i believe that there is something to learn from the "exercise" that is being shown in the video. I highly doubt that Endo is simply being a "machismo" in the video. you cannot deny that being able to see things clearly and training your body to be calm in these situations you CAN learn something. self-defense gurus would STRESS that it is not possible to counteract the natural "tendency" of your body to coil up and be rigid, no use trying to convince people that it might.
