The 2 dances shown in this clip (which I believe were both devised especially for the series) seem more akin to what would be described nowadays as ceilidh dances. The more elegant dance which Emma subsequently dances with Mr. Knightly is more like a kind of country dance known in Scottish country dance (SCD) circles as a strathspey. Both ceilidh dances and country dances (traditional ones and newly-devised ones) are still danced by ceilidh groups and country dance groups. Sue Willdig
Miss Bates is always so well-meaning. I like her. She is quite a bit to take on , butI find her less annoying than in the Emma movie. Maybe it is Tamsin Greigs doing, for I can't remember Miss Bates from the book.
When Ms. Bates said that Emma and Frank are perfect for eachother Knightly's face was sooo funny and adorable! It was like "Ohhhh heck no! They are not!" Haha! I love Mr. Knightly!:)
UGHHHHHHH why do they even show the orchestra if they are terrible at fake-playing?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Why can't they just hire real musicians instead of extras??!?!?!?!?!
Ugh! Mrs. Elton.....I would just throw my civility out the door at both of the Eltons had they treated a friend like that. Knightley to the rescue of course!
SPOILER I haven't read the novel, but I don't buy the "Jane has ugly hair" comment from Frank. I think he wants her balls. The letter, the piano, his mean comments about her... they've got something going on for sure!
I love the epression on Mr knightley's face at 8:10 when Emma says "Your secret is out" and then at 8:12 when she says "You dance better than anyone" and he realises what she is talking about.
I am in love with Emma in this version and so charmed by Mr. Knightly. There are so many scenes in this version that are amazing but I especially love the subtlety of [4:05]'s conversation. Knightly looks so happy because of Emma's happiness but also shows his jealousy. Wonderfully acted.
The dancing in this adaptation reminded me a bit of Rose and Jack dancing below deck with the "lower-class" passengers on Titanic....very lively! I love the authenticity of the dancing, which, like the entire movie, is youthful and fresh...nothing too stiff or formal. I love the older Austen adaptations by BBC and normally despise any period drama that tries to be too modern. But this movie has a nice balance and has really won me over!
Oh man, I honestly teared up when Knightley asked Harriet to dance, even though he's not a dancer himself. It was lovely and charming. I love this version of Emma. It captures each characters personalities so well.
Mr. Knightly is like the girls' very own knight in shinning armor, I feel like he saved almost all of them at some point in this movie. First is Fairfax, then Smith, Bates, and Emma later on.
@RPtheTruth ... I agree, the way she 'flicks' off Emma's hand like it had something nasty on it... What a pure cow... but Christine Cole really does play 'the bitch role' so perfectly... she plays a wonderful 'cow' in Jane Eyre, with Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson... Another wonderful production by the BBc... :0)x
Why is it that I seem to love Jane Austen's male leads so much?! Mr. Knightly, Mr. Darcy and Captain Wentworth are some of my absolute favourite male characters of either contemporary novels or classics!
I love those dancing scenes! Maybe the best I've ever seen in an Jane Austen adaption. They're so lively and look like fun. It gives such a nice fresh aspect to this series.
true , but the dance scene in P&P 2005 actually is one of them most Romantic, lively dance scene in any J.A adaption or any period drama adaption ... even if it wasn't exactly from the book, but definitely the best <3

@wenglishsal ... Has anybody seen Christina Cole in 'Lost in Austen'... Or as Blanche Ingram in 'Jane Eyre' 2006... Christina looks fabulous in costume drama's and she really does play 'bitches' very well indeed... :0)x
I'm not sold on the modernization, but Mr. Elton's hair cracks me up. It suits the character very, very nicely that there's just too much product in there.
This dance seems a bit too modern lol.... good movie though much better than I was expecting since by and large I consider the glory days of BBC period dramas to be past ;-\
@ShawDAMAN Absolutely right and well put - the glory days of BBC period drama are past. Indeed of ALL period drama, particularly the Jane Austen kind. We will never again see anything as good as the 1995 P&P - and have you noticed how each Jane Austen mini seems to become more and more like a period romp instead of a period drama? Still, I like this one tremendously.
Agreed on all points. "period romp" lol that puts it very well. All period dramas are too "modernized" and any violent or raunchy aspects that can be exploited generally are to full effect, at the expense of the wonderful dialog and plot intricacies that made the originals so good, and the classics that they are. This goes for all the great english authors; Dickens, Austen, Bronte, Eliot, etc etc. But I did like this one although I prefer the 1972 Emma in a number of ways. ;)
Poor Mr Kinghtley has to listen to everyone around him discuss Emma and Mr. Churchill being "Perfect for each other." He and Ms. Fairfax are in the same situation.
I noticed that most gentlemen are wearing tan pants, while Mr. K is in black. A few older men have the black. Even his jacket fits differently. Is this to just set him off, or to show that he older or is a little out of date on his dress? Love his expressive eyes.
I lvoe how Mr. Knightly would rahter have been boiled alive than dance -but for Harriet's honor, he stepped in. And then when he looks surprised and worried when Emma says 'his secret is out'... *sigh*
Poor Mr. Knightley .......look at his expression at 3:46.... while he watches HIS Emma dance with Frank Churchill. She is so oblivious to his feelings for her. This Knightly is good but the Knightly from Paltrow's Emma is much better.

What a way to obtain an invitation for a dance! But with a close friend as Mr.Knightly is it will certainly do without any harm to her honour.
He might have felt some pangs of jealousy when he saw he dancing with Frank. Or is it when he realised how much he cares for her?
