Betty's shit is timeless unlike a whole lotta Funk you hear. Like Miles said in his book: she was ahead of her time. Too hot to handle, for everyone, even Miles. Man, if she were young and on the scene now, she'd blow them all outta the water.
Before Betty married Miles she was involved with an uptown gangster with him and his brother owned and operated a hot club called the Cellar. There's were she was introduced to the early New York club scene.
Betty wrote this song about absolutely knowone, not Miles and definitely not Hendrix..Betty's best friend Devon Wilson, was Jimi's old lady. Betty and Jimi were friends and only friends. Jimi wanted desparately to meet Miles, and Betty was his ticket to do so. Miles had never known a woman like Betty, he did not have the control he was use too having over his women....Betty wanted to simply write a song with the words "BIG FREAK"(never been done) and to make it a "S&M song(never been done)....
Debates have been going on for years about this song, as to who it is in reference to. Many pundits say it was indeed written by Betty in reference to Miles Davis. He then in turn, as some sort of retaliation wrote "Back seat Betty". Which can be found here on Youtube and the "We Want Miles" album. For those who may not be aware, the term "back seat Betty", is an old skool term that refers to a woman that is very promiscuous, and eager to give it up. Most commonly in the back seat of a car.
Betty Davis is the queen. I just read that she actually wrote this song about Jimi Hendrix, not her former husband Miles Davis. Interestingly, Miles wrote that he and Betty broke up because he thought Betty and Jimi were having an affair--which Betty denies completely.
she did a 4th lp in '79 called "Crashin' from passion", I found it on import, don't think it was released here,(USA) I'd never seen it. another piece in the puzzle! last word I heard on her was she was doing gospel!
Very expressive vocalist - alot of singers take note of the range of inflexions she gives the words - far above alot of efforts you hear - and great band! Love dat bass!
Thanks for clarifying that too often-repeated myth. She also says she was not a groupie, didn't do drugs, and never made it with Jimi despite Miles' paranoia. She's so straight-forward that naturally I believe her instead of the haters.
any chae that funlroll could release betty's oustanding 'Anti-love song'? Awesome tune! LovIng the rest too - thanks for introducing me to this genius who was well before her time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone that does have a video of her could take good money - but don't sleep - it could finally be put out commercially one day and your exclusivity would be gone.
