I think it's interesting that he's confident that God doesn't exist, but has said elsewhere that he's certain life exists on other planets.
I also think it's noteworthy that he initially tries to dodge commenting on the content of his Heaven and Hell concert "ad lib." He had a Catholic upbringing, and there is no question he was aware of the inflammatory nature of what he was singing (and still does, incidentally). I think there's probably some unresolved hostility lingering from his youth.

It doesn't bother me dark lyrics, but if you want happy Dio try his first band Elf, some of the Rainbow, and 'Wishing Well' of the Heaven and Hell album.
