A little hint for new players... stone, when next to dirt, "attatches" itself to the dirt. Iron does not, so there is a tiny, but easily visible line around the material, making it easily distinguishible from stone. The same goes for copper, silver, gold, demonite, hellstone, etc. Hope this helps!
