That red guy with spots is toxic fresh but when dried will surely make you high. It actually takes about 15-20 full sized caps of fly agaric to kill a man. Also that one you showed first that you said isn't good to eat is actually a reishi, a rather valuble mushroom medicinally.
Thanks for that, as you know most of that film was done in France, but the reishi in Quebec. Perhaps the agaric are more powerful in Europe as we are warned that far less than you mention on eating the fly agaric would kill!? I miss my mushroom picking in France as am now in the UK and very few fungi here where we are! :-( But am enjoying the English beer. Out of interest, how is the reishi used medicinally?
@faith6651 Well first I'll tell you that when fresh the Amanita Muscaria is more toxic and yes, in a large dose would kill you. But mostly the authorities just don't want people messing with them LOLz. I use my reishi's in the following manor: put an entire cap, (about the size of your fist), in water in a ceramic saucepan and boil for about two hours. Then drink the tea in a small cup once a day for it's immune boosting properties. The tea is kinda bitter, but it's good 4 U!
Yes that certainly makes sense! :-) Thanks for sharing the info - most interesting. I think the thing is that there are so many fungi closely resembling each other that unless you are an expert best to play safe and leave well alone? I read that there are some mushrooms perfectly edible here that have identical twins in the USA that have caused many deaths due to being so! :-(
@faith6651 Well Amanita Muscaria is VERY distinctive amongst that family and is very difficult to confuse. However, here in the states there are yellow and orange and yellow+orange variations of the same mushroom. The yellow form MIGHT, to an amateur, resemble the death cap, but lacks the white worts on it's surface. I don't really know 2 much about EU shrooms since I live in the states though. Best to get a GOOD field guide than to just take my word for it.
The one I am thinking of was / is apparently a lookalike for our common field mushroom and sorted quite a few early settlers out and into graves apparently! I tend to go with local experts such as yourself, as guides, when travelling. Same with the fishing, always best to ask the locals! :-) Bye for now and bonne cuissine!
You have a very beautiful country to hunt, and an interesting channel. I didn't get out too much this year. Usually I will dry about 10 or more gallons of wild mushrooms. Great job!
Thanks for that - I had a rather negative comment on this film recently - but as I replied, I do not pretend to be an expert, simply sharing my way of life and fun :-) I do say to take care and know what you eat! As to whether on picks or cuts mushrooms is an ongoing debate? :-) Thanks again - Peter

hw do you know which one to pick? I makes me think of the American movie, "The Beguile." Take place in USA Civil War, starring Clint Eastwood.
