  • his voice.

  • Woah, I'm in the Beefheart part of Youtube again.

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs ever, just holy damn

  • I love this song! It's brilliant! I think the video is from Das Cabinet Des Dr. Caligari a film from 1920 :D

  • shit. I heard this earlier today for the first time in about a year and it feels so weird hearing it now that he's dead. I always wanted to shake his hand. Don's body of work means so much to me.

  • Reminds me a lot of Otis Redding

  • I'd give about 3 to 4 thumbs up, if I'd only had the oportunity, blaming Youtube and itsy bitsy amount Alice Järvet for the bit of lack.

  • Goddamn somebody PLEASE tell me what this black and white movie is!!!

  • props for dr. caligari clips

  • Ah, an artist like this comes along every fifty years or so.

Unfortunately I don't see anyone out there ready to replace him.

He had a gift and got as much of it to us as he could afford.

It came at a steep price and its going to take a couple hundred years for

    it to sink in.

    bbcart1

  • i think these clips are from "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"

  • I really like this. I've been surfing and, at first I thought their music was pretty weird but, there really is magic to it. : )

  • My dad's best friend, he died before I could meet him :(

  • @skullzrulemymind what?...

  • @skullzrulemymind whats your dads name ?

  • @Rickrocks911 from Lancaster ?

  • @skullzrulemymind are you Dweezle Zappa?

  • Captain Beefheart is perfection.

  • it was actually kinda funney

  • it was actually kinda funney

  • is the movie the cabinet of caligari?

  • @oNortz yeah

  • this is beautifull first time that I hear music from this band."

  • Agreed but the most amazing thing about this track is that the Captain had the Balls to put this on Safe as Milk.It shows that he just loved good music whatever it's genre. It could even be thought of as slightly 'corny' now, but of course it isn't it is great music and he realised it and so put it on this great album. Why not? Good call Don, good call. It proves he didn't give a hoot for those who were too ready to pigeon-hole him as 'psychedelic' or some such nonsense.

  • what's the film playing here?

  • @TroutMaskReplicaa it's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). ironically I just saw it for the first time last week, pretty good early horror flick.

  • Why are all the commentaries so intense and cerebral.Glad is just sublime, wherever he was coming from.

  • I love it to bits, in a guilty pleasure kind of way and I'm still not sure what he was thinking when he did this... it is so full of naive angst and a succinctly masterful, profoundly emotional statement.

(continued) But - the cheesy easiness makes it so accessible to the listener takes it out of character somehow. The Cap's art is rarely easy listening - yet he cut "commercial" stuff that he later professed to hate - so I'm torn - was it parody or was it heartfelt letting the armour down?

  • @MisterHeavy This is the fifties doo wop thing that he grew up listening to, so its definitely sincere, Zappa did lots of similar homages which sometimes border on taking the piss. Who gives a fuck, if you like it, then that's fine, so do i.

  • First time I heard this, back in '68 or whenever, I creased up at the wonderful bubblegum-soul parody it obviously was. Days of Zappa and "Happy together." I still regard it as a very tongue in cheek number - FGS just look at the rhyme scheme - but I also regard it as one of very very best pieces of singing I ever heard, performed over some of the best damn playing ever.

  • The video doesn't really fit the song in my opinion.

  • R.I.P. Don Van Vliet aka "Captain Beefheart"

  • I watched some of Nosferatu muted while listening to Abba Zabba. It synced up surprisingly well. True story.

  • Even Dr. Caligari likes the Captain!! : )

  • fucking love it.

  • Where your attention is directed, your Energy there flows

NEW MUSIC GROUP CAN DIN SKY

  • i watch this video..Dr Caligari was so proud of Cesare...his somnambulist..the film defined the 20th century...great job..5*****

  • Beefheart even made something the ese's can cruise to, and a good slow jam, love song, or whatever level you want to enjoy it on. Memorable tune.

  • Dr Caligari..best film ever...the 20th Century was one of horror..

  • .... dr caligari

  • RIP Maestro

  • @rodcrippler There was a Maestro on ebay last week. The bloke selling it thinks it is worth a lot of money judging by the starting price. It isn't.

It's just an old 1300 cc Maestro.

It hadn't even got any tax or MOT!

  • luismiguel...no entendes nada de baladas :p

  • Damn honestly one of the best songs i heard in a long ass time.

  • Thank you...it fits so well...

  • I was sad about the Captain but I'm Glad about the good times I've had with his music.

  • captain beefheart is the light

  • even though your gone, you still live in your music and our hearts! rest in peace capt.

  • This is way too good

Can someone tell me if this was the real video for this song? Or someone just mixed beaf and caligary just for fun?

  • @castles111

I believe the footage is from the silent movie the Cabinet of Dr Caligari.

  • @psychedelictripper

yes i know the film, I just wanted to point that the mix between this film and this song is so magical that it should be presented at Moma or something...

    great work

  • What movie are these scenes from?

  • eye'l have the Caligari...would you like Beefheart with that?....yes, of course

  • Don Van Vliet had the most soulful white male voice EVER. It's a shame that his music is so overlooked and tracks like this prove how he could emote effortlessly. There is nothing fake about this track. This is so beautiful. Safe As Milk has become my favourite album of all time. i love all their other work but this is obviously more accessible and fits any occasion whereas something like Lick My Decals off is great in certain situations.

  • @certificate18flix You mean a White Man! Male is what the college boys and, girls say.

  • @MrPotatoesLatkie If you say so.

  • @certificate18flix Really? 'Soulful' isn't a word i would have used to describe Captain Beefheart.

  • @koitorob well when your comment gets more thumbs up than mine maybe i'll consider what you're saying ;-)

  • @certificate18flix Well said. Very well said. I can appreciate other Captain Beefheart albums, and I certainly appreciate the brilliant madness that is evident in his later works, but Safe as Milk is really a masterpiece. Definitely my favorite album of his and one of my favorites of all time. Cheers!

  • Captain Beefheart R.I.P.

  • Captain Beefheart, like all the finer things in life, is an acquired taste... SO START ACQUIRING!

  • Wow. I just found out he died. I'm very sad. His unfiltered expression had a positive influence on me.

  • I'M GLAD TOO! Great Concept!

  • is this girl on jack white´s drums?

  • This might just be my favourite song ever...

  • @thegoodusernameman haha, i was just thinking that too

  • we miss you mr beefheart!!!!!! so sad baby!!!!!!! love the snooty bobs.

  • People have a problem with anybody/thing they don't understand. There WERE times, songs, where he could actually sing "conventional" with passable results, but he didn't really give a rat's patootie about that.... And neither do I. For crap's sake, the guy had a 4 or 5 octave range (it doesn't matter- for me- I can't even HEAR 4 or 5 octaves anymore); just think of him as a Dada songwriting Minnie Ripperton with testicles..... His stuff didn't always work, but he still swung for the fences...

  • @mistercreosote13 I'm so certain there's no way he had a 5 octave range (although I would love to be shown wrong with examples of him singing particularly high or low). I can match Beefheart note for note in every album I've listened to so far, and I definitely have less than a 3 octave range.

  • @n4r9 ....let me put it like this.....u are one of those American Idol contestants that thinks they are singing great and hitting the notes, but you're not........u cant match beefheart note for note

  • RIP, Donny, tell Frank hi for us.

  • Rest in Peace Don it wasn't easy I'm sure.........

  • This is "real soul". REAL SOUL. In every sense of the word.

  • RIP,CAPTAIN...

  • I listened to Safe As Milk on repeat play the night I found out he'd passed away. I hit the bong and drifted away... Such a one-off. I love him when he's far out and I love him on tracks like this when if you listen closely enough you can hear his soul crying. He will be missed. He has been missed xxx

  • i'M gLAD ABOUT THE gOOD TIMES THAT bEEF AND i HAD.

    tHANK u dON.

  • The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari

  • RESPECT

  • You can pay props & throw sand on a couple of tweedy minds ; -) at the same time if you'd like @ the L.A. Times " Pop & Hiss (Music ) section for readers comments.

  • Wow. This film (Dr. Caligari) is from 1920. That's 90 years ago. 90!

And rest in peace Captain. I'll miss you.

  • Genius, vision, guts, humor ,honor.in one package .I never took him for granted- but now he's gone ' there is a crater in the heart of culture that the posers will hurry to fill .Read up on Multiple Sclerosis and your respect for this man will just soar.

  • Sorry for your passing & all the better for your being. Rest in Peace Captain.

  • RIP

  • O Captain! my Captain...

  • R.I.P. the best

  • Classic track.

  • just started looking through the bands work. was very surprised to find something like this. i love artist that don't have a clear defined mold.

  • ADIOS AMIGOS!!!

    I'M SAD :(

  • RIP Don van Vliet.. One of the greatest modern artists

  • RIP, CB...

  • R.I.P. Captain..

  • @spicymeatsandwich Find somewhere else to squeeze the pus out of your cognitive warts, you putrid waste of molecules. You write comments for slugs who hate progress. This music is clearly too beyond the stratosphere for your atrophied imagination. Say hello to the other denizens of the gutter, and offer them my sincerest condolences for the trick played on them by fate. I vomit thinking about how sophistical your thinking patterns must be if you actually believe in the crap you've written. Turd!

  • @vliet2

    Hurray for thesauruseseseses

  • @spicymeatsandwich Go listen to some Nickelback and let the non intellectually challenged people listen to some real art.

So what exactly do YOU consider to be "real music"?

  • RIP Captain Beefheart

  • Can't believe he's gone. There will never be anyone near to his greatness and as inspirational. RIP Beefheat. You will be greatly missed.

  • RIP BEEFHEART

  • MY SINCERE APOLOGIES FOR MY INAPPROPRIATE COMMENTS. RIP TO DON VLIET. I WILL LEAVE YOU GUYS ALONE TO CELEBRATE THE CAPTAIN'S LEGACY.

  • So sorry n'sad today......... RIP

  • Rest in peace, peaceful soul!

  • Goodbye Captain!

  • RIP my friend.

  • My captain

  • goodbye..

  • I'm glad about the good times that we had too, Cap'n

  • Goodbye Brother

  • Rest In Peace , Dude .

    Respect !

  • Mais arretez avec vos instrumentales de merde putain !! Je suis pas dans la TETE de Philippe Manoeuvre !!!

  • This is very effective use of footage to one of the many songs of Don's that were of great worth to me ~ the fact that he was so free as to not merely "give the people what they want" - "the people" don't know what they want, they're told what to like and swim accordingly

It's such a joy that he made music for "the person". I always liked that this was like a great lost soul tune and perhaps fit nowhere else within his repertoire ~ So unique he did what he wanted no matter. Rest in peace, Capt.

  • its kind of sad, i was reading of frank zappa and i ran into captain beefheart and fell in love, i just cant believe i have never heard of him before. having good music like this would have been appreciated earlier, although i am only 24 i do enjoy good music

  • @dennis789111 Not everyone loves a smooth voice. During his teens he "designed" his voice by drinking whiskey, smoking and yelling while trying to have common colds all the time. In the end he always sounded that way.

  • @dennis789111 You just have to "be there" and that's the only way I can explain it. An energy resonates in this "artist" unlike any other - almost "holy" in nature. Often it takes time to accumulate, but don't let knee-jerk reactions full you. I first heard Trout Mask Replica, listened to it twice, and put it up. Got it out a few weeks later and listened to it again. Before I knew it, I owned everything he had out. I really can't explain it. It's a unique experience. Grows on you. Fast. Bulbous.

  • rip captain

  • RIP Captain. Great song for his wake.

  • RIP!

  • Rest In Peace, Don Van Vliet

  • RIP Captain.

  • RIP

  • this is the sweetest fucking song...sigh.

  • Top song!! Great album too!

  • You gotta have ears to listen!

  • rattydet - how are you doing with the great, "Mad" Captain after two weeks? You should see his BBC documentary, including comments by Frank Zappa, Matt Groening and Ry Cooder, available on YouTube in six parts.

First heard him in 1966, saw him live in 1971 - incredible!

  • @BRIANHEP thanks. will be sure to check it out

  • knew nonthing about this song or beefheart. was just browsing to see the title song from blue collar. now im hooked. this song is amazing.

  • Safe as Milk is one of the greatest records ever made . Every song on it is absolute knockout .

  • hey you beefheart fans do me a favor please give the chords of this song

  • I WANA MARRY YOU CAPTAIN!

  • great song, also I watched this and M. in class--german expressionism owned

  • I love this so much

  • this shit makes me laugh

  • awesome video!

  • Cool old school song.

  • Now, I drink milk,

  • The film is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari, 1920) a masterpiece of the silent cinema era directed by Robert Wiene.

  • Arr this is cool,I'm listening to this very album as I type,I think old Don would like this tribute..very lovely indeed!!! 5*** Sophie xx

  • Greatest voice in rock history. Coincidently, the greatest band behind him as well.

  • what is the name of that movie?!

  • good post

whats the film dude ,, BEEFHEART IS THE MAN much better than all the shit in the charts now ..

  • @spadge321 from the film Dr Caligari

  • The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

  • @spadge321 "the cabinet of Dr. Caligari" Its a silent film, and that guy who looks like a mime... well does he remind you of anyone more modern? Its an actor named Conrad Vikes, the actor that Batman's "the Joker" was designed after. If you check it out you probably won't be dissapointed.

  • so impressed with Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

  • love this guy

  • Brilliant musician, beautiful song. This guy is an artist on the level of Picaso, Rodin, and Van Gough

  • Terr0rkitten love the video of the Adams family with the song it matches perfectly, thanks for posting it!

  • @leenlouie it`s from a film called `the cabinet of dr.caligari`

    not the adams family.....

  • @CultureCunt Thank you for letting me know!

  • Beefheart doing Do-Wop. The irony is mind-boggling. I remember playing this on WRCT (CMU) around 70-71, so yes, it was on the vinyl, no doubt.

  • I am glad to have a good time!!!!

  • Zappa was w/out a doubt

    "a straight arrow Howie..."

    they're both big oldies fans,

    thanks

  • Beefheart does otis Redding proud... fo shizzle

  • I always liked the Adams family.

  • This song always makes my heart a flutter. lol. Especially in the " So sad baby, so sad girl" bit. Im Glad i found this song.

  • Very Nice the second time around too.

  • beautiful singing by a great artist- why does anyone have problems with it? - He can do mainstream to the limit- he can do avant garde to the limit- what's that if not greatness?

  • @keltyk you aee tje mamn my man yopu gopt it

  • @keltyk completely agreed. i think some of his 'fans' get upset when other people can enjoy a more accessible song of his.

  • @keltyk I love what he said when asked why he didn't go commercial - "I'm either to smart or too stupid"

  • In fact, before Zappa finally died, his nightly routine was to sip on margaritas and listen to his extensive doo wop collection.

  • Beefheart used to SING IN R&B BANDS LIKE THIS YOU IDIOTS - he sang backup vocals for the penguins - frank zappas doo wop band that was the house band at el monte legion stadium - the hub of r&b in late 50's los angeles. In a way it is a parody and satire - but don't doubt that both zappa and van vliet had a soft spot for this music..which makes me want to slow dance oh so close to mi ruca.

  • Beautiful song. To hear what's going on in it I suggest you listen without watching.

  • Beefheart is a true Genius! no matte rthe medium of his expression, it is true joy to hear him!

  • There is no inherent contradiction between this and his more radical work. It's all part of a continuum. He took his influences and twisted them into something new. In the heat of the crucible steel is formed.

  • i dont see this as complete parody. somewhat heartfelt methinks.

  • awsome

  • Don was the DON .....nuff said....

  • Selling out? It's nothing of the sort. The Cap'n is obviously infuenced by R&B. He's just doing what he always does on this record. He's channelling whatever buubles up from inside and letting it splatter and flow all over the recording medium. There is no cynicism or irony in his music. It just is.

  • Love the parody of it all!

  • I'm surprised that you bothered listening if it objects so much. Indeed, if you are a Beefheart fan you'd know the track already - why would you listen, you must already know how you dislike the track!

  • Yeah it's true I already knew I didn't like it. I just couldn't help myself, you see sometimes when one really cares about something one can be compelled to express dislike for the bad as much as love for the good. And I always want to try to like the soft side of Captain Beefheart. But the truth is I don't and probably never will.

  • Well, thanks for trying - I guess there are often parts of an artists career that we dislike and those that we love. I agree that that desire to love all is there and that is certainly the case with Captain Beefheart in my experience. The two styles do jar though.

    Thanks for looking

    Phil

  • Oh! The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari! I thought I recognized this from somewhere...
