check out "Bujinkan" , "Ninjutsu" if you are intrested in Samurai & Ninja teqniques. it is 18 different teqniques (Kenjutsu, Sojutsu, Taijutsu, Bojutsu, naginatajutsu etc.)
Oishi pretended to become a drunk and vagrant and consorted with prostitutes... I bet that was less pretending and more he just knew how to enjoy his last few years of life!
There was actually 48 ronin, the 48th was pardoned on account of being young, and lived to a ripe old age before joining his friends at their memorial.
@Pawnbroker00 Actually there was 47 ronin and not 48 like you said. The 47th ronin was ordered to go to ako and inform that they had taken revenge. and like you said when the 47th ronin came back, however the shogun excused him. It is said that he was excused because of his young age.

Damn superpowers of the world ruined everything. I am proud of Japan for trying to stay independent. Makes me sad.I hope many Japanese continue the traditions the people had even if they have no real point. People who like samurai and Japanese history should watch the anime Samurai Champloo. I learned a few things from that and its very good.
This documentary is odd. Most of the "Experts" are western or rather American. You'd think that when asking about Japanease history there'd be a Japanease professor or something? In the same way if you want to know about Yugoslavian culture you don't ask a Chinease, you ask a Yugoslav. The documentary is good but I don't know. Some of the guys they interview have very weird tone. Almost as if they don't want to be there or hate Japan. But I digres, I don't know. I'm just getting a weird vibe
but they are hardly "experts" in japan history as opposed to the bunch of foreigners used in the interview to give "facts". I do not question the quality of the documentary but I agree with foggy here. I find it odd and wrong to ask an american/english person about Japan history.
Before Americans started merchandizing with the Japanese, there were the Dutch and Portugese. The Dutch even had their own village in Japan, what has now been rebuild and acts as an open air museum. Why is this fact forgotten? Oh yeah, this is an American documentary.
i admire the way of the samurai so i keep a swird set on my dresser and one by nightstand and a poster of japan but one day i wish to see th very country one day
@ht9900 WHAT oO!!! That was like the reason i started watching this?? Why is it so hard to find stuff about them.. In my local libary they have 4-5 books about samurais and NONE of them even mention the shinsengumi.. Makes me sad =/
Whoa..47 samurai's waited 3 years to get revenge, then killed they guy..then they presented theirselves to authority..and then they all did seppuku..WTF O_O
No, they were no Samurai, they were Ronin, masterrless Samurai, cos of the assasination!! But they hadnt lost their honor. They killed the assasin, knowing they had to commit Seppukku. Even the emperor himself moarned about this tragedy. And yes, the yyanks will ruin the world, by their lifestyle and ruthlessness. But nature will show them, just sit and look.
that must take alot of discipline and of course a whole new outlook from the modern view of things...from what i sense, it was seemed really peaceful and noble in those time periods
This is a very famous event in japan. I had seen movie about this as well, and it is kind of sad story. 47 rise up, well aware that what they are about to do would mean seppuku, yet their will for revenge and loyalty to their leader drove even young men of age 18 to volunteer for the vengeance.
The end when every 47 men performed seppuku one at a time on the film was heartbreaking.
Im sorry, I unfortunately dont know the title of the film. It's all in Japanese so I don't know if you would understand any of it anyways. Its a really well told story in japan though.
Japanesese are really good at lobbing westerners, specially Americans, who do anything for the money. Broadcasting fake japanese history is crime. I learned in France that Samurai was passed down by Corea.

You know, particularly in the part 1 to 3 or 4, they interviewed Japanese citizens, such as the sword maker who descends from Masamune.
