This ending is good, and I do think it works well, but I liked the Leave ending better. Not because I'm a softy, but because it shows that no matter what you can overcome your sins. In that ending, James was the one man who was able to finally forgive himself and head back to a normal life, unlike Angela or Eddie, who were driven insane. This ending makes me feel like he was doomed from the start.
This was the first ending I got. I was so shocked and so moved by it that I was bawling during the first few lines of the letter. I still play this at least once a month, and I'll always try for this ending, since I've gotten the others already.

It's kind of interesting...in both the "In Water" ending and the "Leave" ending, Mary forgives James and tells him that he has suffered enough. The only difference is whether or not he accepts her forgiveness. If he accepts it, you get the "Leave" ending, and if he doesn't, you get the "In Water" ending.
John's suicide was more of a cop out than an act of penance. James learned nothing in this ending. He stayed the murderous coward that stopped outside of Silent Hill. In Leave, he did the hardest thing one in his shoes could do: he sucked it up and moved on. To live with such guilt; to learn from such guilt. Now that's penance.
Unfortunately, a lot of things in this game had to be "hinted" for ratings reasons. His suicide was one of them. If they actually showed him committing suicide, it would have given the game an NC-17 rating. That would have been bad because an NC-17 rating is a death sentence for business...there are almost no stores that would sell an NC-17 game. So they had to just "hint" that he committed suicide to keep an M rating.

This isn't "beautiful". It's dark and terrible. James murdered his wife because he could no longer stand to support her -- and it's hard to blame him. It's chilling and it shows how cruel the world really is.
Like the rest of the game, this ending is designed to be a terrifying play on the psyche.
It's amazing, memorable, powerful, brilliantly crafted and inspired. But it is horrifying and sad.

I love how organic the choices are in this game, loads of games like GTA IV or Fallout have moral choices, but Silent Hill 2 integrates them beautifully... For example, examine the knife Angela left for you, that opens James' mind to suicide, or if you look at the picture Laura left, this makes him release what he has done and how he can atone for it. Or, you could ignore both these and attach yourself to Maria just to have the cycle start over again at the end of the game. A masterpiece.

James CAN kill himself. I know he said he wouldn't do it, but he said that Mary died from illness too and we know that's not true... IMO, he's in denial of a lot of things. I can't see him doing the all "rebirth" thing or taking Maria with him (because she's not real and from the hint we get in Maria ending, she would have died from the same illness as Mary). Either the Laura ending or this one is believable IMO... but James is said to be missing (SH4) so I go for the In Water ending.

Very powerful game. Something that you should let take over your life for a few days. Silent Hill 2 is an absolute masterpiece. And this is not only the saddest, most meaningful ending ever, but its also the best.
In Silent Hill 3, Douglas said that he went to Silent Hill on a missing person's case and that he never found "him". And Silent Hill 4 revealed that James and Mary disappeared when they went to Silent Hill.
A lot of people think In Water is the canon ending. I believe the Leave Ending is the canon ending.
This ending is good, until she starts reading the letter. She just keeps going and going and by the end, I've completely lost interest, coming from guy who really enjoyed this game.
One of the main problems with the follow-ups to this game is that the endings were too clear cut for me i loved trying to figure out the truth behind this never succeded though
This is the most tragic ending, yet it's also the most satisfying because of the concrete conclusion. The original writers of this series are ingenious. Everything after SH3 was sub-par compared to this brilliance.
Come to think of it, the four endings could be considerd good, good, and bad, bad. Ironically I'd still say that In Waters is one of the good endings. He finally gets to confess to Mary and ease the pain in his heart, get the load off his shoulders. On top of that, he finally gets what he wanted, he gets to be together with her, forever.
Well, there's a painting in Henry's apartment and when you go up to it sometimes he'll mention it... its near the beginning of the game after you see Frank for the first time I think.

this is pretty mcuh the easiest ending to get. Investigate the journal ontop of the hospital roof, examine Angela's knife... try to run away back to Nathan Avenue when Maria wants to go after Laura...

Well if you think about it all the endings will end up the same way. With the Maria ending she has a cough which dooms them to repeat everything all over. With the rebirth... well what is he going to do? Keep a zombie? He'll probably kill himself in that.. and so on
Very very sad ending. Silent Hill is really a tragic serie. It is based first on human's pain and torments. That's why this serie is special compared to others survival/horror games...
I think i begin to understand now all the powerful meaning of Silent Hill.
I think this ending along with the Maria ending are equal in terms of being "bad" endings. In the Maria ending, though James gets the girl, the town screws him over by forcing him to live through the ordeal of his wife's death all over again.
In this ending, James has never accepted Mary's death and thus doesn't move on, opting to commit suicide rather then live through the sorrow in his heart...
Two sides, same coin. James still suffers either way.
T_T this ending makes me want to cry, but at least there in heaven right now, in silent hill, before it became evil, enjoying themselves like they did so many years ago.

So what? Look at all those prophets and saints in the Bible who made a name for themselves. Many of them stained the streets red with blood, and if they didn't experience severe psychological trauma because of it, I'd say hell is preferable to heaven because that must be where the humane people go.

What I'm saying is that if a person doesn't suffer psychological trauma after commiting homicide, which there were a shitload of in the bible, which victor brought into the discussion by condemning James to hell, then the homicidal saints and et.c. of the bible, all in heaven by now according to the scriptures, MUST've suffered psychological distress, else heaven would be occupied with psychos while hell would be overflowing with humanitarians. Very powerful game. Something that you should let take over your life for a few days. Silent Hill 2 is an absolute masterpiece. And this is not only the saddest, most meaningful ending ever, but its also the best.

In Silent Hill 3, Douglas said that he went to Silent Hill on a missing person's case and that he never found "him". And Silent Hill 4 revealed that James and Mary disappeared when they went to Silent Hill.
A lot of people think In Water is the canon ending. I believe the Leave Ending is the canon ending.

This is the most tragic ending, yet it's also the most satisfying because of the concrete conclusion. The original writers of this series are ingenious. Everything after SH3 was sub-par compared to this brilliance.

Come to think of it, the four endings could be considerd good, good, and bad, bad. Ironically I'd still say that In Waters is one of the good endings. He finally gets to confess to Mary and ease the pain in his heart, get the load off his shoulders. On top of that, he finally gets what he wanted, he gets to be together with her, forever.

I disagree. I think it was more powerful knowing in silence that James committed suicide. Yes, it's strange that I think that put this game is an emotional roller coaster to me. This ending was the final, yet perfect loop.

Well if you think about it all the endings will end up the same way. With the Maria ending she has a cough which dooms them to repeat everything all over. With the rebirth... well what is he going to do? Keep a zombie? He'll probably kill himself in that.. and so on

Very very sad ending. Silent Hill is really a tragic serie. It is based first on human's pain and torments. That's why this serie is special compared to others survival/horror games...
I think i begin to understand now all the powerful meaning of Silent Hill.

I think this ending along with the Maria ending are equal in terms of being "bad" endings. In the Maria ending, though James gets the girl, the town screws him over by forcing him to live through the ordeal of his wife's death all over again.
In this ending, James has never accepted Mary's death and thus doesn't move on, opting to commit suicide rather then live through the sorrow in his heart...
Two sides, same coin. James still suffers either way.
