@EminEm61001 I agree, but you also have other good music like jazz and music from the 50's, 60's 70's 80's and a few 90's, from then on, its shit music with crappy singers and crappy songs
If you used to listen to pop or techno and you hear a metal music, you realise that pop and techno isnt music, and when you hear Ouverture you realise that metal isnt music.... But this!
Having performed in three operas now, I can honestly say that there is nothing more exciting for a cast standing backstage waiting to go on than hearing this overture (especially since so many rehearsals are with just the piano). Oh, and the pacing on this performance is perfection. :-)
@bwgproductions I have had exactly the same observation! I can remember doing Carmen with NC Opera about 10 years ago, and precisely your point: I was set on stage with the curtain down, the house dark, and then heard this overture start. It's tremendously exciting - I don't know why - it's not the best opera overture (Die Valkyrie has a pretty good one), but it's just spine tingling if you're behind the curtain in the dark.

Carmen is a French opéra comique by Georges Bizet. The libretto is by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée, first published in 1845,[1] itself possibly influenced by the narrative poem The Gypsies (1824) by Alexander Pushkin.[2] Mérimée had read the poem in Russian by 1840 and translated it into French in 1852.[3]
It just kills me how the conductor barely gives the orchestra time to be seated before going into this performance. And it's even more amazing how the orchestra doesn't miss a beat! Wonderful performance!!!! BRAVO!!!!
@Neonalfax - The piece immediately after the Ouverture is "Sur la place chacun passe" followed by "Regardez donc cette petite" Hope this what you wanted to know
Levine is one of my all-time favorite conductors. He has a straight-forward, no-nonsense, but deeply emotional approach and is a superb technician who brings out stunning precision and power from whatever ensemble he's leading. This is a perfect example.
