Mavis Rivers was one of only 3 artists to record for Capitol Records and Vee-Jay Records: 1) Mavis; 2) Motown's Barrett Strong; and 3) The Beatles. Not bad company, eh BringMeGold?
Mavis Rivers' talent broke through barriers with her getting with Capitol Records. This was quite a feat when you think of other jazz-blues artists that were struggling at the time---Little Jimmy Scott, for example---and dying for national recogniton that a major label contract could give. My favorite album, however, is not on Capitol, but the Vee-Jay Records---a Black owned company, I am proud to add (betcha didn't know that either, did ya, BringMeGold?), "We Remember Mildred Bailey." Superb!
A little bio on Mavis. She is of Samoan ancestry. Her son is well known music director of the Honolulu Pops Orchestra and big band arranger Matt Cantigub.
What a great singer!I LOVE her! There ARE CDs on *mazon and record LPs on *bay! She did 3 albums on the Capitol label, 3 albums on Frank Sinatra's Reprise label and one on VeeJay (with Red Norvo) all with the very best arrangers of the time: Nelson Riddle, Jack Marshall, Marty Paich, Van Alexander. There was a remarkable comeback in the 80s. Sadly I've read that she died from a stroke after a show in 1992.
The world needs to know more about Mavis. She's not even on Wikipedia and deserves to be. I just found out about her listening to the Singer & Standards channel on our cable TV.
A fantastic and legendary talent like this, who broke down barriers and could hang with the best jazz players of the day...and you, a reported family member, don't know a damn thing about her other than "I've heard but never seen her sing before..."? No, you can't be ANY relationship to the great Mavis---you and others in your family have just thrown dirt in her face with your ugly commentary. Tell all of your family members---if you are indeed related to her---to hang your damn heads in shame!
Im related to her. She is one of my aunties. Of course i wasnt born yet but still she is family!

She is still one of my all time favourite JAZZ singers. She was a Samoan, great voice and style and she Jammed for all of us.

@steeleyeman Accurate bio! Her niece and my daughter-in-law Teresa says that Auntie Mavis's birthday would have been May 19th.

"I've heard but never seen her sing before..." your "lowly" words, not mine. And I bet you have a great hip-hop collection, don't you?

I would be nice if you both took the Rivers name out of this and focus on Mavis.
