Oh my god...the way Greg expresses himself on the guitar is so far above other guitarists it's mind boggling.....Greg can't play like other greats like Andy James or Steve Vai or Guthrie Govan or whoever but THEY can't play like Greg either.....the way he attacks lead lines in a non linear approach is without equal...his bends, his vibrato, his wide interval note choices, his absolute smooth and soulful approach to soloing is unequaled.
Well It's great, and I'm joining not to compare Malmsteen with Greg. Such a mistake! For God's sake! Not the same category! Both are brilliant! Everybody can make a list about unique masterguitarists but it's really not right I think. Listen to the maestro who is playing right now otherwise you can't enjoy it.
@zoli780830 Yngwie is breathtaking in his own way, but this is so much more colourful in every way imaginable. Love them both, but Greg is far more interesting.
I don't know why people are fighting over Yngwie and Howe. I personally don't really listen to Yngwie, but he's a talented guitarist. People should be getting more upset over Lady GaGa and those crappy artist of today!
Keep Yngwie out of it. I'm a big fan of both guitarists and Mr. Howe is just more loose, hip. It's jazz fusion vs. neo-classical fusion. I think the clue here is that it rocks. Bad ass.
What the fuck is with all of the hate on Malmsteen? Good phrasing is an opinion. There is a guy on youtube under the filename of Sunderlanding who thinks that Guthrie Govan's phrasing is extremely boring. Ridiculous, I know, but it's true. Malmsteen has plenty of tasty songs like Leviathan and Black Star. With all due respect to Yngwie though, he needs to evolve. Guys like Greg Howe and Jason Becker find ways to play different things under the same genre. Yngwie needs to learn to do that better.
Malmsteen is not a master, Malmsteen is BORING. Only Michael Angelo can be more a ball-buster than him! Freak out and shred in the same way the same neoclassical scales every time is for me no proof of mastery at all.
@andretribuzymetal yeah shredding harmonic modes with their easily framed arpeggios and inside diminished phrasing was considered complicated in the 80s... its 2011 now... you gotta be able to do that with all music music theory, not just a section, be able to play progressively, have a song structure, great phrasing and great transitioning nowadays, and on top of all that, sound sexy... these neoclassical tards are living in the past.
For those we continue to compare guitar players think of it this way- guitarists at this level are like famous painters on one hand you got Pollock and on the other Picasso-the only thing these guys have in common is that they're painters but that's about it.
Greg howe is the best guitarist ive ever came across .i haven't found another guitar player yet to top him..he deserve extreme respect i wish i could learn from him.=.
I love how every Fusion player have a completely style of playing. One uses economy picking, one uses only legato, one strictly alternate picking everything, ect.
Since i have nothing to do right now im boycotting justin bieber videos and posting links to videos like this with misleading descriptions like "watch justin bieber get a nose bleed on stage".
Well, it's not the fact that he plays too fast that makes me prefer Greg, it's that I never hear him really going through chord changes and making phrases, all I hear is technique.
@flowerdrop1 Both stunning players IMO. Greg Howe seems completely loose from Technique whereas Guthrie, amazing and incredible as he is, seems to base his licks more around his technique. So to me GH wants to go from note a to note b and uses whatever technique feels comfortable, which is why you'll hear picking, sweeping, tapping, legato or whatever all in one lick, and Guthrie kind of uses one technique per phrase if that makes sense. This is why I think GH sounds even more natural to me.
wat kind of pickups for an hss guitar wud get me a sound like greg howe i no that dimarzio makes gh pickups but those are only in his sig. laguna model any help would be great thanx !!!!
i can't believe 21 motherfucker don't like this GOD of the guitar i don't understand how people can be so useless and don't know the real meaning of music fuck you all the people who don't like grew howe mietras tanto sigo escucahndo esto THE BEST
@chechoguitar112 , gregs great , but dont yngwie who? go listen to little savage and then u wont say yngwie who, better yet go listen to the whole rising force record, yngwie is great at what he does and greg is just great but dont ... yngwie who lol
@betweenjazzandhell Actually Greg belongs to the same universe, Mr. Howe became known in the 80's because he was a neoclassical shredder. And much better than Yngwie, on both universes!
@betweenjazzandhell My favourite guitar plays are Greg Howe and Yngwie Malmsteen but you can't seriously compare them now. I mean for starters, Yngwie creates his unique with his sound in that he makes heavy use of arpeggios and linear phrases and Greg Howe instead makes use of multiple string phrasing and jazz scales. I could go on all day- but you simply can't compare them.
he always uses a muter though. its so much easier to play when theres absolutely no noise from the open string ringing. just try it for yourselves! its cheating.
@ShredFever92 Haha how is that cheating?? It's merely another tool for him to be able to unrestrainedly express himself through his instrument. Tons of people use those, myself included. The drawback to having super hot pickups that will capture every nuance of what you're trying to do is that they pick-up EVERYTHING haha so keeping a hair band behind the nut and sliding it down when it's solo time just lets those annoying ringing open strings be one less thing to worry about! peace
Truly awesome! this is one of the most beautiful thing I've ever heard , sincerely!
Do you think It's possible to get the Backtrack anywhere ? I've been playing on the chords progression but here the drum and bass are so nice ! I'd love to play on it.
This guys insane! if youre looking for proggressive guitar rock/metal stuff, check out animals as leaders. Tosin abasi is one of the rising virtuosos in jazz and metal guitar
Hey does anyone know what Fender amp that is?? I heard he used M80's in the past, but wasn't sure..... Greg rocks!! Always will. I think it's awesome how he's evolved as a player from each album. I must say "Introspection" is one of my all time favorite albums along with "Five." It's one thing to be able to write out all of your stuff and play it note for note, but it's another to be able to improvise on the spot.
Awesome.... I'd like to know what kind of fool would actually put a thumbs down on this!! Are you kidding me? This is freaking real great music done by one of the masters of his instrument!!!
I love the ESP he's playing. Man would love to have that. Gotta try the Laguna signature. Great sound tremendous fret work..I can watch this over and over and have..
I sure am glad that there aren't idiot posters saying stupid stuff like, "he's not all that good, just a bunch of notes". Gregg is just nasty. Sooooooo clean, creative, tasty, and all that is good. How about that record he did with Kotzen. I had that. What a "wrong" CD that was. 1 of those guys is more than I can hangle. Two on the same CD just makes me poop right in my pants.
This guy is amazing while he sits there and perfectly executes some of the most difficult guitar riffs ever, the expression on his face, looks liks he's buttering a piece of toast.
One question: If i had a swamp ash body guiat with a maple neck and f-board and threw in a couple of dimarzio Breed humbuckers in there...would I get Greg howe's tone or atleast close to it?
@sensational1982 If i were you id go with an HSS style guitar put the greg signature humbucker in the bridge Fast track 181 (the pickup he used back in late 80s through to victor wootens extraction album) and the breed in the neck if you wanted his modern sound.
For me im a huge vinnie moore fan so i put the dean shred head( his signature pickup which is really meaty and bitey) the fast track 181 in middle and a cruiser pickup in the neck to get some Andy timmons/ Marco sfogli sounds.
Can anyboday tell me what that yellow thing on the guitars neck is??? I supose it's something in order to avoid the open strings to sound?? I've seen it a couple of tmes but still dont know what it is all about??!!!!
@Bicho705 - exactly what you just said, to stop string noise during tapping parts etc. It's a hair band, but i believe you can buy a specific tool for the job instead.
dear greg howe , ur styles amazing what kind of scales do you use in this video and jammin on sunny? i need to learn new things and ur stuff is crazy and u gave lessons to my friend alex at one point help me out man dat would be great thanks
@jimixwaffles it is redundant to ask what scales he is playing. the man is a master of jazz theory. he is literally changing scales as the chords change. it is something called pitch axis theory. what it means is that you can play several different scales over a single chord. you need to be a scale dictionary to know all of the fingerings.
@SirJamestheIII Yeah he is. Whenever he hears something all sorts of ideas spring to mind, both melodically and - in his case very much - rhythmically. Those guys don't even think about that stuff anymore. Whenever we hear Am 7 we go "of let's play C maj 7 to emphasise the 9th", with them, they immediatly hear the notes they want to hear in their head and the're immediatly capable of translating that on their instruments and create someting interesting and wonderfull called music!
he gets a huge organic natural and musical feel to his soloing and this kind of improvisations he does throught all his albuns covering hundreds of diferent styles are amazing. and even the music he composes with the solo band sounds outstanding.
god damn you greg howe.....his left hand is acually robotronic.......he's not human. well his riffs are out of this world.... if you like this vid check out jammin on sunny. my favorite by greg for sure.
greg is the michael jordan o maradona of six strings no one like him ni siquiera gambale o otros mucha técnica pero al final les falta el feeling que tiene este chaval.
I would give my left nut to be able to play the guitar like Greg Howe. His mixture of jazz fusion / progressive metal, and neoclassical guitar playing is awesome. Greg's blazing speed, and techique is also outstanding. I have been collecting his music from back when he played in a band with his brother who sings .
Agreed c588414. Not many are aware of Greg's versatility. I personally think he plays neoclassical better than anybody else, even though he's not a fan of the genera. He brings a groove and melody to it, rather than just blazing up and down the scales (like other 'shredders' tend to do). His 'High definition' album with Vitalij Kuprij is a must-have listen.
high definition is my favorite neo-classical album ever. Symphony V. Vitalij is the same on the the keyboard as greg is on the guitar. he doesn't just blaze up and down scales, he actually has a lot of dynamics. I would really like Greg to get out of his comfort zone (if thats possible) because he has been doing fusion for a while. I would like him to take a path like Al Di Meola did and do a lot of different things
proteoid, thanks for the info about Greg Howe. I have never heard of Vitalij Kuprij, but I definitely intend to check him out. Proteiod, Greg also did a project with an awesome keyboardist by the name of Jordan Rudess. The CD is entitled, "Rhythm of Time". Greg does an awesome solo on (track4). J Satrinai, S Morris, and V Moore are also included on this CD.
That's a great album. I think Greg features on track 6 too. On "beyond tomorrow" and "what four". He does the harder solo in the beginning and then Steve Morse does the Melodic solo in the end. Awesome CD! Vitalij Kuprij plays on GH's own album (more prog metal too) "Ascend" as well.
@c588414 Instead of giving your left nut, give a few hours of your time each day. In time, and with much practice, you will be able to play like him with both of your nuts intact!
@goodsjprg7 wellllll I don't think there's anyone who plays "like" GH. He's quite unique, has a lot of amazing ideas and superb phrasing/timing. But technically you can become that good, sure, it's extremely hard though :p His tapping is tricky and he uses pretty much all techniques through each other, I don't think he cares about that stuff anymore, I hope to reach that level someday, I doubt it though! Such a natural.
i want that backing track!!

Can anyboday tell me what that yellow thing on the guitars neck is??? I supose it's something in order to avoid the open strings to sound?? I've seen it a couple of tmes but still dont know what it is all about??!!!!
Bicho705 1 year ago
@Bicho705 - exactly what you just said, to stop string noise during tapping parts etc. It's a hair band, but i believe you can buy a specific tool for the job instead.

ive always loved gregs comping especially when using fast track pickups, the rythem sounded chunky. The breed is too beefy not "funky" enough.

dear greg howe , ur styles amazing what kind of scales do you use in this video and jammin on sunny? i need to learn new things and ur stuff is crazy and u gave lessons to my friend alex at one point help me out man dat would be great thanks
jimixwaffles 1 year ago
@jimixwaffles it is redundant to ask what scales he is playing. the man is a master of jazz theory. he is literally changing scales as the chords change. it is something called pitch axis theory. what it means is that you can play several different scales over a single chord. you need to be a scale dictionary to know all of the fingerings.
SirJamestheIII 1 year ago
@SirJamestheIII Yeah he is. Whenever he hears something all sorts of ideas spring to mind, both melodically and - in his case very much - rhythmically. Those guys don't even think about that stuff anymore. Whenever we hear Am 7 we go "of let's play C maj 7 to emphasise the 9th", with them, they immediatly hear the notes they want to hear in their head and the're immediatly capable of translating that on their instruments and create someting interesting and wonderfull called music!

he gets a huge organic natural and musical feel to his soloing and this kind of improvisations he does throught all his albuns covering hundreds of diferent styles are amazing. and even the music he composes with the solo band sounds outstanding.

greg is the michael jordan o maradona of six strings no one like him ni siquiera gambale o otros mucha técnica pero al final les falta el feeling que tiene este chaval.

His 'High definition' album with Vitalij Kuprij is a must-have listen.
proteoid 2 years ago 2
high definition is my favorite neo-classical album ever.

J Satrinai, S Morris, and V Moore are also included on this CD.
c588414 2 years ago 2
That's a great album. I think Greg features on track 6 too. On "beyond tomorrow" and "what four". He does the harder solo in the beginning and then Steve Morse does the Melodic solo in the end. Awesome CD! Vitalij Kuprij plays on GH's own album (more prog metal too) "Ascend" as well.

Greg's versatility is amazing!!!
If you hear introspection and then high definition you think that is another guitarrist!!!!
I love how Greg play neoclassical!!!!!!

@c588414 Instead of giving your left nut, give a few hours of your time each day. In time, and with much practice, you will be able to play like him with both of your nuts intact!
goodsjprg7 1 year ago 2
@goodsjprg7 wellllll I don't think there's anyone who plays "like" GH. He's quite unique, has a lot of amazing ideas and superb phrasing/timing. But technically you can become that good, sure, it's extremely hard though :p His tapping is tricky and he uses pretty much all techniques through each other, I don't think he cares about that stuff anymore, I hope to reach that level someday, I doubt it though! Such a natural.
