A good song is just that, there is nothing "mystical" about it as Tim, an athiest shows here by singing this song as powerfully and emotionally as any religous nutbag could
I really love how the woman starts her verses then goes alittle overboard lol But still fine nevertheless. And I'm impressed Tim's so good when he's drunkish haha, nice chorus though!
I had the pleasure of seeing him perform this live as his second encore when he was at Lupos Heartbreak Hotel in Providence RI. IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING!!!! This mans that precious nugget of happiness. I only worry that he'll never be able to one up himself because I sure as hell know that other entertainers will never be as clever, talented, and entertaining all in one package as this man. Tim is god!! Readers, please don't shit on my Hyundai.
This song is so overplayed and overdone and holy crap everyone and their frigging cat has covered it...but when I hear a rendition like this, I can't help but continue to love it. <3
Not sure what you're all talking about, Geraldine Quinn is holding her own while drunk just fine. Tim's voice is still the dominant one in the video and I think her deeper tones are a good compliment to Tim's higher pitched wailing. I think his fluxuations would sound pretty weird without her providing a solid baseline to play off of.
He played it at Laugh Or The Polar Bear Gets It last Friday. He got everyone in the room singing along. It was so beautiful, it was actually the most wonderful five minutes of my life, right up until I met him afterwards and he kissed me. Then that kind of surpassed it. But, oh, he has such a beautiful voice, it's unbelievable!
Let's clear some things up: the lady he' singing with is not his wife. His wife's name is Sarah, and you can see her in the Rock n' Roll Nerd documentary.
John Cale sang the song in the film, but Rufus Wainwright sang the version that was on the soundtrack CD. So they're both right.
@ChauwieeLovesMusic she is not his wife, his wife is Sara, a beautiful woman with long dark hair, this is a singer called Geraline Quinn, I think she is somehow famous in australia, has a good voice too...
People, this is a DUET. As in, TWO people sing. Tim sung the first half, and his wife/girlfriend (unsure if she is, just assuming) sung the second half, and they both blasted out on the finale.
If anyone has the fantastic rendition of this song from Tim Minchin's Dallas concert, please put it on Youtube. I don't think it will ever make it to a CD/DVD because of the small mistake in the song, but it was magical anyway.
I saw Tim last night in concert and this is the song that he ended the show with (2nd encore). It was very surreal and sublime when an audience of irreverent and atheistic hippies joined along and crooned with an equally irreverent artist such as Tim. It was very surprising and a very, VERY nice ending to the night. All because of a beautiful song by the name of Hallelujah.. Also, I don't like how this woman sings it, like she's trying to show off her pipes in a song not made for it. :(
I wouldn't dislike the woman as much if Tim did a cover of this on his own. I think she's a good singer, but she's drowning him out. I'd love a copy where it's just him singing. <3
@mantalow She's actually phenomenal when she's not drunk -- they both were three sheets to the wind here it looks like -- but she does better solo. Not in her element with this as a duet. But that's the Fringe -- you can never tell what combination is going to fall together there, and oftener than not is totally one of a kind and one for the ages. As for him -- he can sing this like he was born to it, because he's a total chameleon who groks the elemental nature of any music conceivable.

Obsessing over the individual contributions is redundant.
@FFXfever Look, the woman singing here is called Geraline Quinn, look her up if you don't believe me. And no, the reason I thought the wife had black hair was due to me seeing her in a YouTube video talking about Tim.
@cttjcb: if this song was written using classical allusions, like hephaestus and aphrodite or something, would that mean that the author (or singer) actually believed in those gods?
@cjttcb: spiritual is way different from religious, and anyways leonard cohen is jewish--he reconciles buddhism by stating that since zen buddhism is more of a way of mindful living and doesn't worship a deity, there's no conflict between the two. either way, this song is about a relationship between a man and a woman using biblical metaphors (david and bathsheba, samson and delilah).
Heard Tim sing this live a couple of weeks ago after his regular performance as his encore. It was awesome to hear him sing it live, but I kind of missed the harmony. I don't know who the lady is but she has a beautiful voice.
@failure2launch , I know the song was written by Leonard Cohen. The guy is very religious. Cohen spent like 5 years in a Buddhist monastery. The song isn't a hymn but it's far from nonsecular. And when something is "couched in biblical terms" that makes it subject to ridicule by atheists regardless of whether or not you sing the song at church. And all I was saying is Minchin makes fun of these kinds of this kind thing constantly and I'm shocked he was able to restrain himself.
@cjttcb I guess you're right, but on the other hand, the power of a song like this can make anyone "suspend disbelief" for the purpose of the performance. I mean, the story behind the lyrics, while couched in Biblical imagery, is universal, as are the particular biblical passages it refers to. Plus it's one of the greatest, most powerful songs ever written. If you appreciate great music, you'll be moved by Whitacre's "When David Heard," for example, atheism notwithstanding.
Jeez Tim I understand you need to indulge in a serious song but how did you not burst into flames singing a religious one. And the "Faith was strong but you needed proof line" No joke?!?! off your game bro.
I love how absolutely stunning this was, despite the fact they were both completely drunk. I think it actually helped rather than hindered. More emotion. Just beautiful.
I'm so disappointed that there isn't a recorded version of this song that doesn't include the "you've got to be f*cking kidding me" guy at the beginning and the drunk chick who cant keep the key. I would pay so much for Tim Minchin's recording. His is the best version i have ever heard! I just love Tim Minchin's voice...
Dudes Awesome, I feel Jeff Buckley can't be beaten for randtions of this song but Tim's awesome and a small intimate performance like that is an unforgetable experience for those lucky enough to be present.
Tim shows his strong Atheism by singing a song thats chorus is meant to praise a god he doesn't believe in. Yet, he still kills it.
