I think it's a little slower too. Every version I hear, even the one in the movie Carrie, the pitch is a little higher and plays a little faster. Either way, this is a great song no matter what speed you listen to it.
Oh, and I'm not trying to bitch but your turntable does run slow... I know all about pitch matching and such, but sometimes songs are played in a different key live (often just a half step off from the original).
The main thing here is that Martha's voice sounds completely unnatural - a bit more like a robot than a human. ;)
hey all you wannabe video camera people !! take a tip from a PROFESSIONAL TV CAMERAMAN;; if you are going to take pictures of your records and post them here, DON'T , DON'T, DON'T hold the camera in your hand !! you weave and shake all over like Elvis Presley. Your picture weaves and moves all over the place. Put your camera on a tri-pod , focus and set your shot ,, THEN poll your camera and then do your edit and then post it . It'll look better and you'll be happier with it . CHEERS !!!!!!
Same label on 45's my brother had. To this tempo we did a South Street or a variation on sloptime, if you're from Philly you know the dances.Slightly uptempo, was our church dance's final dance contest song.
@suportable Thanks for your comment, suportable. I adjusted the pitch of the turntable to bring the music to the key which it was written and as you said, when you compared it to the live version, it sounds the same, because the musicians are playing in the same key of 'D'.
@69ssrszl1 One of the best girl groups ever love the gospel sound and driving rhythm. All good rock has kick ass black roots, more style and soul, and talent, unlike monotone techno junk out today.

@mikk999 No that was 2 lines of BS typing. Get your facts straight. :-) Sorry but that is what the comment section is for. I prefer just music in the video. I did make a mistake however. It should have been 58 seconds, not minutes.
@tbcass Well let me say this, as long as your on MY channel your gonna hear me introduce each and every song. But you have a choice,my friend. You can complain about it , which won't change anything or go on someone else's channel to listen to the song without the benefit of the information that I give!
@bankman58 hey man, I like your introductions. A little history lesson, kind of kind like listening to it on the radio and a DJ setting up the track. Thanks for the great vids.
Your video proves exactly why those of us raised on records have not, and likely never will, become totally captured by CDs. There's something far more psychologically satisfying about WATCHING the record spin while listening, and the stylus traveling across its surface than watching a bloodless ticking off of minutes and seconds on a CD player's puny window. This is even truer in the case of 45s if the record player is a high-end stacking automatic.
@dvlaries Hey dvlaries! Thanks for your comment. I totally agree with you about vinyl records. I was always fascinated watching them spin around on the turntable. I think that's the reason why record companies designed their labels the way they did.
@dvlaries I was raised on vinyl. My parents had "oldies" and vinyls are the best. Sound quality is dedraded on those cds for sure. Wish I still had a turntable with older songs. So much more original and true.
"As for Martha, her voice blasted through the production flourishes on 'Heat Wave' in a defiant, lustful performance that showed an emotional intensity 'Memories' had only hinted at."
- "Where Did Our Love Go," 1985, St. Martin's Press
@Locksleyfair1 Thanks for the comment, Locksleyfair1, you cannot listen to Motown music without realizing that it was the musicians who made the sound! I recognized that after seeing "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown". I often wondered how the songs would sound if Motown did not have the Funk Bros. playing on them.
@byrd1nypa Thanks for that bit of info,byrd1nypa. I am aware of the pop standard "Heat Wave" that was recorded by Marylin Monroe and I guess they were planning on recording a remake of that song. But I'm glad that they came up with their own version because in my opinion, it's far superior.
@bankman58 You really know your Motown history. Though this song has been redone and remastered so many times that the versions you here now are sped up and martha's voice is transposed higher.
Not sure, Tremolux59, I was thinking that Robert White was possibly the guitarist on this track. I know that he played on the early Motown sessions. Any info, I'll update. Thanks
I was just about to ask this question, but I see that it's already been asked. Nobody knows? (Robert White, Joe Messina, and Eddie Willis were all there virtually the entire time in Detroit.)
More Gold from Berry Gordys hitmill, Hitsville USA, in the motor city DEROIT, MI fantastic, been recorded by many others but only this one the original is the best in my opinion.
this song was played in the great underrarted movie called nothing but a man starring ivan dixon, the brother in hogan heroes and the great abbey lincoln who was an actress , a jazz singer, and one time wife of max roach legendary jazz drummer in the 40s and fifties
This song had two different versions. The version released on the album and this is the second and I believe the better of the two. It reprises the vocals and does away with some of the rest. Most oldie radio stations will play this version now and I think it holds up alot better.
Quite simple, most turntables do not have PITCH CONTROL, which is what I use. It allows you to adjust the pitch so the music plays in the key that it was recorded. Also, compare the live versions (with musicians) of the song posted on You Tube to what you hear on CD's. Does the music sound the same as on the CD's?
Yes indeed. The recordings you hear on CDs sound faster, but they are not how the song sounded originally. You can also listen to live versions and hear the musicians play the song inthe same key as this record.
I like the Supremes version , but this one has a certain feel about it that just does it for me . Martha and the Vandellas were such a huge part of my childhood . Jimmy Mack is another one of those songs .
Hey TonygMus2, this is what I've been saying all along, the songs as they sound on CD is noticibly faster than how I (and I'm sure others) remember hearing them. That's why I get comments about the songs sounding slow from other YouTubers. They're not used to hearing the songs played on the correct speed. Thanks for the comment
Not sure where you are but I go San Franciso often and I go to Amoeba Records, and it's a huge warehouse with all the classic old vinyl. They can be sorta expensive though or you can check out Bleecker Records in NYC. All the vinyl and 45 I've bought have been in great condition. Like bankman58 said ebay is great place to buy too!
This song was released on Motown's Gordy imprint as Gordy 7022 in July of 1963 and is featured on the "Motown Master Recordings-Original Artist Karaoke" karaoke CD from the Singing Machine!
absolute classic! timeless magic from Martha, the Vandellas...and it does'nt become an inferno without the FunkBrothers.....who could put it down like Holland-Dozier-Holland? love the way it fades...you can feel Martha is burnin'! great post!
Bankman58, I appreciate the historical information you impart in this video for this Motown classic. My question (the answer to which you perhaps may include here if you care to): Who wrote this song...was it the legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland song team?
Hey lollysoul, you can try eBay. They appear on eBay on a regular basis from different sellers in the "records" and "Motown" section. Try to find a copy that the condition is VG+ or better.
Thanks 45spindle for the comments. That's the very reason why I chose to use vinyl, not just for the sound but also for the visual that records produced when they are played.
Just listen to way this thing swings. Combine that with the visual of watching the label design of the black 45 vinyl spinning was what mesmerized me from far back as a toddler nearly 50 years ago. To this day, there is nothing still as pleasing as watching a 45 spin and listening to the amazing sound that comes from it. Pops, clicks, hiss, and all!!!!
You can find similar records like these on eBay. Just be mindful of the conditions of the records being sold. Get copies that are VG to VG+ or M- when available. I do sell occasionally.
This is truly the best part of You Tube where perhaps what may be seen as forgotten music (although not in my eyes) can be shared with a new generation. Many thanks for this post it is a great song.
Thanks Individuell83, the reason that it sounds slow is because the pitch has been adjusted to how the song sounded originally. For comparison , you can listen to the live version that I have posted (Martha Reeves- Heat Wave (live) 2005) and you will hear it being played by the musicians in the same key (D+).
Bankman I must say your 45 sounds good. I have that extended version on the Greatest Hits Martha Vandellas. Great song and you're right the mono is strong and sounds better.
i have the extended TRUE stereo mix from the 4 disc box set called the motown box. and that sounds better than the 45.the original song is almost 4 minutes long. the stereo versions u heard were often different to the real TRUE version. the just mixed it different.and the 45 cuts out 3 parts from the song that u normally hear.
I also have that Motown Box set and have heard the extended version of this song. You must remember the REASON the songs were edited down was because of time constraints for radio airplay. Back then the songs had to be played within two minutes, which meant parts had to be edited out to bring the playing time into that length. The Greatest Hits stereo version has parts in the middle not heard on the single, but the ending for whatever reason is shortened.
yea i noticed that too. i wish motown would have released the full version with nothing cut out. i really love heatwave. and quicksand was a great follow up to heatwave. martha and the vandellas were fantastic!

Quite simple, most turntables do not have PITCH CONTROL, which is what I use. It allows you to adjust the pitch so the music plays in the key that it was recorded. Also, compare the live versions (with musicians) of the song posted on You Tube to what you hear on CD's. Does the music sound the same as on the CD's?

bankman58 2 years ago
Hm, while I have to say that it sounds way better than other records on youtube, it is actually slower than their live performances.
Is it possible that your record was simply recorded at a slower speed and other versions were performed faster?
I'm not sure it's just about pitch, considering their live performances.
Thanks for posting this, either way.

The Greatest Hits stereo version has parts in the middle not heard on the single, but the ending for whatever reason is shortened.

That mono sound is far better than the stereo mix. I need to find a copy of this 45!

That's true. The mono versions had a strong backbeat that was lacking in the stereo versions.
