  • is that a Stanton 681EEE cardridge?

  • @grandspazmachine Yes, it is a Stanton 681EEEcartridge.

  • I think it's a little slower too. Every version I hear, even the one in the movie Carrie, the pitch is a little higher and plays a little faster. Either way, this is a great song no matter what speed you listen to it.

  • @LedWilde I noticed the slowed pitch too. I thought it was me. lol.

  • Oh, and I'm not trying to bitch but your turntable does run slow... I know all about pitch matching and such, but sometimes songs are played in a different key live (often just a half step off from the original).

The main thing here is that Martha's voice sounds completely unnatural - a bit more like a robot than a human. ;)

  • Way to go Martha and the Vandellas!!! rock on!!! 60s rock forever!!

  • hey all you wannabe video camera people !! take a tip from a PROFESSIONAL TV CAMERAMAN;; if you are going to take pictures of your records and post them here, DON'T , DON'T, DON'T hold the camera in your hand !! you weave and shake all over like Elvis Presley. Your picture weaves and moves all over the place. Put your camera on a tri-pod , focus and set your shot ,, THEN poll your camera and then do your edit and then post it . It'll look better and you'll be happier with it . CHEERS !!!!!!

  • Same label on 45's my brother had. To this tempo we did a South Street or a variation on sloptime, if you're from Philly you know the dances.Slightly uptempo, was our church dance's final dance contest song.

  • Love it thank you

  • perfect record!

  • Gotta give props to James Jamerson on upright bass and Andrew "Mike"Terry on baritone sax!!

  • I THINK THESE SONG R STILL COOL

  • If so many people don't like the intros maybe they should just got buy their own copy and play it! I personally like the intros!!!!

  • @suportable Thanks for your comment, suportable. I adjusted the pitch of the turntable to bring the music to the key which it was written and as you said, when you compared it to the live version, it sounds the same, because the musicians are playing in the same key of 'D'.

  • next time just play the damn song!

  • GOD BLESS VINYL! THE SOUNDS, POPS, THE MOTION. CD'S & MP3 CAN'T COMPARE. THANKS FOR THE POST

  • @69ssrszl1 One of the best girl groups ever love the gospel sound and driving rhythm. All good rock has kick ass black roots, more style and soul, and talent, unlike monotone techno junk out today.

  • was a young kid when this song played at the tilt a wirl i coney island nyc

I aws one kool little white boy love it

  • 7 people must be suffering from heat stroke.

  • This is a beautiful song...

  • Excellent commentary. Very informative. Giving credit to everyone involved, where credit is due. Thank you.

  • another reminder of the palace in rhyl .... a brilliant motown stomper ... and not easy to dance to , even in those days ... now in my 50's i've got no chance !!!

    thanks for posting ...

  • thia megia of american idol give justice to this song!

  • Marvelous song from Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks for posting...great childhood memories!!!!

  • @tbcass 20 lines of your ungrateful BS typing, 0 lines of useful commenting. SHUT UP AND GET OFF YOUTUBE!!!

  • @mikk999 No that was 2 lines of BS typing. Get your facts straight. :-) Sorry but that is what the comment section is for. I prefer just music in the video. I did make a mistake however. It should have been 58 seconds, not minutes.

  • @tbcass Well let me say this, as long as your on MY channel your gonna hear me introduce each and every song. But you have a choice,my friend. You can complain about it , which won't change anything or go on someone else's channel to listen to the song without the benefit of the information that I give!

  • @bankman58 hey man, I like your introductions. A little history lesson, kind of kind like listening to it on the radio and a DJ setting up the track. Thanks for the great vids.

  • @bankman58 You probably love your intros but I don't like intros. It would be nice if you could just let the song play.

  • Your video proves exactly why those of us raised on records have not, and likely never will, become totally captured by CDs. There's something far more psychologically satisfying about WATCHING the record spin while listening, and the stylus traveling across its surface than watching a bloodless ticking off of minutes and seconds on a CD player's puny window. This is even truer in the case of 45s if the record player is a high-end stacking automatic.

  • @dvlaries Hey dvlaries! Thanks for your comment. I totally agree with you about vinyl records. I was always fascinated watching them spin around on the turntable. I think that's the reason why record companies designed their labels the way they did.

  • @dvlaries I was raised on vinyl. My parents had "oldies" and vinyls are the best. Sound quality is dedraded on those cds for sure. Wish I still had a turntable with older songs. So much more original and true.

  • @dvlaries I totally agree!

  • @dvlaries

You can say that again. I'm in love with the 60's music

  • Berry Gordy was very much like Jamie Foxx's character in Dreamgirls.smh

  • James Jamerson on Bass...swingin!!!

  • long live the Funk Brothers! the REAL Motown Sound! check out Standking in the Shadows of Motown

  • Motown biographer Nelson George:

"As for Martha, her voice blasted through the production flourishes on 'Heat Wave' in a defiant, lustful performance that showed an emotional intensity 'Memories' had only hinted at."

    - "Where Did Our Love Go," 1985, St. Martin's Press

  • A hymn to kundalini, no doubt.

Bankman always has the best intros

  • Very, very good, wonderful.

  • Thanks for the mini history lesson man, that was cool & thanks 4 posting the song.

  • im only 16 but i loove this song

  • @Locksleyfair1 i wish he'd just shut up and play the song. so sick of self proclaimed mc's!

  • Hit the play button at 0:58..:)

  • SHUT UP

  • Makes me think of LIONS Dragstrip... The Beach Lives!

  • excellent sound...THANKS BROTHER

  • Whenever he calls my name

Soft, low, sweet and plain. Belt it out Martha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • man do i love those drums!

  • stfu please

  • 3 downvotes? who voted this down? how could you? its heatwave!!!

  • @Locksleyfair1 Thanks for the comment, Locksleyfair1, you cannot listen to Motown music without realizing that it was the musicians who made the sound! I recognized that after seeing "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown". I often wondered how the songs would sound if Motown did not have the Funk Bros. playing on them.

  • what stylus is that ? i never seen 1 like it

  • @selli68 Hey selli68, I use a Stanton 681 EEE III cartridge.

  • glasgow in june - canny wait!

  • Eddie Holland said, they were originally going to do a remake of the pop standard, Heat Wave, but decided to just come up with an original

  • @byrd1nypa Thanks for that bit of info,byrd1nypa. I am aware of the pop standard "Heat Wave" that was recorded by Marylin Monroe and I guess they were planning on recording a remake of that song. But I'm glad that they came up with their own version because in my opinion, it's far superior.

  • @bankman58 You really know your Motown history. Though this song has been redone and remastered so many times that the versions you here now are sped up and martha's voice is transposed higher.

  • sounds like denzel narrating at the beginning

  • awesome song...

  • Way cool, I just realized this song is a shuffle! Pistol was a good shuffle drummer. Jamerson was incredible. Did Joe Messina play onthis track?

  • Not sure, Tremolux59, I was thinking that Robert White was possibly the guitarist on this track. I know that he played on the early Motown sessions. Any info, I'll update. Thanks

  • @bankman58

I was just about to ask this question, but I see that it's already been asked. Nobody knows? (Robert White, Joe Messina, and Eddie Willis were all there virtually the entire time in Detroit.)

  • More Gold from Berry Gordys hitmill, Hitsville USA, in the motor city DEROIT, MI fantastic, been recorded by many others but only this one the original is the best in my opinion.

  • is that justin?

  • this song was played in the great underrarted movie called nothing but a man starring ivan dixon, the brother in hogan heroes and the great abbey lincoln who was an actress , a jazz singer, and one time wife of max roach legendary jazz drummer in the 40s and fifties

  • This song had two different versions. The version released on the album and this is the second and I believe the better of the two. It reprises the vocals and does away with some of the rest. Most oldie radio stations will play this version now and I think it holds up alot better.

  • Intro was very informative for those who didn't know anything about the song!!!!!!!!!

  • Another real gem..

    Well done..

  • Great intro Bankman

  • Always great to hear this song! Martha and the Vandellas were (and are!) one of the all-time best!

  • Intro way too long. Anyone searching for "Heat Wave" is already aware. And I agree with a previous comment; it's playing too slow.

  • Great Tune.

  • Back in the time is to live again

  • Hey, thanks Chiparoo22. I appreciate your comment!

  • i love this song

  • Intro was a bit too long, but this is the best version of the song on youtube

  • i love me sum chocolate music

  • i agree

i have the martha and the vandellas greatest hits record album and this song along with come and get these memories does not sound this slow

  • Quite simple, most turntables do not have PITCH CONTROL, which is what I use. It allows you to adjust the pitch so the music plays in the key that it was recorded. Also, compare the live versions (with musicians) of the song posted on You Tube to what you hear on CD's. Does the music sound the same as on the CD's?

  • Agreed!

  • Yes indeed. The recordings you hear on CDs sound faster, but they are not how the song sounded originally. You can also listen to live versions and hear the musicians play the song inthe same key as this record.

  • Hm, while I have to say that it sounds way better than other records on youtube, it is actually slower than their live performances.

Is it possible that your record was simply recorded at a slower speed and other versions were performed faster?

I'm not sure it's just about pitch, considering their live performances.

Thanks for posting this, either way.

  • just pure class!

  • I've loved this song ever since I first heard it at the age of 15... which was many decades after 1963. Truly timeless.

  • I've been searching my collection all night for this to no avail. Thanks for the post and info.

  • Somehow i feel this to be the best summer song there can be.

  • Thanks for sharing the original. Takes me back to riding in my big brothers '57 Dodge and listening too CKLW.

The classic Motown sound, fer sure.

  • This is my favorite dance song of all time (almost!) Some one said it makes her day. So it does mine when I hear it..still

  • I like the Supremes version , but this one has a certain feel about it that just does it for me . Martha and the Vandellas were such a huge part of my childhood . Jimmy Mack is another one of those songs .

  • Diana doesnt have the grit and power that Martha has on this record from 3:15 on, Diana can't/won't do that...

  • for some reason they never played motown music on australian radio in the early sixties this song would have gone to no 1 if they had

  • oh my goodness :) love this song :) makes my day whenever i hear it!

i never really noticed the call and response between the piano and baritone sax before :P LOVE LOVE LOVE the solo! :)

  • I simply love this song!! gets me in a good mood

  • mmmm...simply love it- great!

  • My turntable plays the same slower speed, and it sounds much better. The CD remasters are extremely fast!

  • Hey TonygMus2, this is what I've been saying all along, the songs as they sound on CD is noticibly faster than how I (and I'm sure others) remember hearing them. That's why I get comments about the songs sounding slow from other YouTubers. They're not used to hearing the songs played on the correct speed. Thanks for the comment

  • Not sure where you are but I go San Franciso often and I go to Amoeba Records, and it's a huge warehouse with all the classic old vinyl. They can be sorta expensive though or you can check out Bleecker Records in NYC. All the vinyl and 45 I've bought have been in great condition. Like bankman58 said ebay is great place to buy too!

  • Listen to the hi-hat work, great counter rhythms going on in the background. The musicanship is so good.

  • Amazing live!

  • what ever happened to this music, its so original... what went wrong

  • This song was released on Motown's Gordy imprint as Gordy 7022 in July of 1963 and is featured on the "Motown Master Recordings-Original Artist Karaoke" karaoke CD from the Singing Machine!

  • one of the best , listen to that baritone sax. Fantastic dance music!

  • Comment removed

  • absolute classic! timeless magic from Martha, the Vandellas...and it does'nt become an inferno without the FunkBrothers.....who could put it down like Holland-Dozier-Holland? love the way it fades...you can feel Martha is burnin'! great post!

  • Yes , Heat Wave was written and produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland.

  • Bankman58, I appreciate the historical information you impart in this video for this Motown classic. My question (the answer to which you perhaps may include here if you care to): Who wrote this song...was it the legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland song team?

  • does any one know where I can get this on 7 inch vinal for my jukebox, I have tried every where. thanks!!

  • Hey lollysoul, you can try eBay. They appear on eBay on a regular basis from different sellers in the "records" and "Motown" section. Try to find a copy that the condition is VG+ or better.

  • you have the best voice ever! damn..... i wish i sounded like you

  • Lions Drag Strip on a Sat. night...

  • the record player sounds like its a hair too slow. great clip either way

  • I like the "slower" version =D

  • Me too actually I have this on the original vinyl and it is that slow!

Sounds great I love it. That's the way it sounded when it was originally released.

  • hmm I only know it most time faster anyway I love this slower version

sometimes they made a few istakes when they pressed it on my supremes album some songs are also a bit too fast

    anyway

    GO VINYL

=D I'll always prefer vinyl and NO CD's

  • Thanks 45spindle for the comments. That's the very reason why I chose to use vinyl, not just for the sound but also for the visual that records produced when they are played.

  • Just listen to way this thing swings. Combine that with the visual of watching the label design of the black 45 vinyl spinning was what mesmerized me from far back as a toddler nearly 50 years ago. To this day, there is nothing still as pleasing as watching a 45 spin and listening to the amazing sound that comes from it. Pops, clicks, hiss, and all!!!!

  • bang , fuck yes, new york

  • You can find similar records like these on eBay. Just be mindful of the conditions of the records being sold. Get copies that are VG to VG+ or M- when available. I do sell occasionally.

  • love this song, and it sounds like when I first heard it in the film "Carrie"

  • This is truly the best part of You Tube where perhaps what may be seen as forgotten music (although not in my eyes) can be shared with a new generation. Many thanks for this post it is a great song.

  • this is REALLY MUCH BETTER than the stereo one

it's much clearer not so much echo and the vocals are better to hear.

It sounds a bit slowed down but great anyway

    5*

  • Thanks Individuell83, the reason that it sounds slow is because the pitch has been adjusted to how the song sounded originally. For comparison , you can listen to the live version that I have posted (Martha Reeves- Heat Wave (live) 2005) and you will hear it being played by the musicians in the same key (D+).

  • ohh oky thanks

I thought it played a bit slower

    nice post

  • Totally awesome post! Tips of my hat:) Lance in beautiful Bremerton, Washington

  • great song. you really know your stuff man

  • Bankman I must say your 45 sounds good. I have that extended version on the Greatest Hits Martha Vandellas. Great song and you're right the mono is strong and sounds better.

  • i have the extended TRUE stereo mix from the 4 disc box set called the motown box. and that sounds better than the 45.the original song is almost 4 minutes long. the stereo versions u heard were often different to the real TRUE version. the just mixed it different.and the 45 cuts out 3 parts from the song that u normally hear.

  • I also have that Motown Box set and have heard the extended version of this song. You must remember the REASON the songs were edited down was because of time constraints for radio airplay. Back then the songs had to be played within two minutes, which meant parts had to be edited out to bring the playing time into that length. The Greatest Hits stereo version has parts in the middle not heard on the single, but the ending for whatever reason is shortened.

  • yea i noticed that too. i wish motown would have released the full version with nothing cut out. i really love heatwave. and quicksand was a great follow up to heatwave. martha and the vandellas were fantastic!

  • Love that song

  • That mono sound is far better than the stereo mix. I need to find a copy of this 45!

  • That's true. The mono versions had a strong backbeat that was lacking in the stereo versions.
