@ZakElias01 this game was built from scratch on the ps1 so no wonder the saturn version kinda blurry and miss some shadows and light on at some part's especially on the charecters.
this video doesn't give a good image of the saturn version of this game. I play saturn on rgb and it looks more colorful and crisper and a little better than psx unlike in this video. it also sounds better like basically any saturn game does
the developers probably had to do the voice acting themselves. back then, the video game industry wasn't how it is today where companies can afford to pay A-list celebrities to bring a bunch of polygons to life.
Honestly I'd say both are at a stalemate, I've played both and honestly couldn't determine either having an advantage over the other, either the game was great on both consoles.
the saturn version makes them look fat, and as if there is no color blend. the ps1 looks better it looks realistic (for that time) more blend and better models. the saturn version looks too raw, if that makes sense
Obviously there was some issues with the Saturn video...I have both versions myself and know for a fact that the Saturn version looked way better then this....
@XenosLangley Not really. I mean Im a die hard sega fan but the graphics just arnt as good on the saturn version of this game. I just played the saturn version about 15 minutes ago.
i almost see no difference between the 2 versions, you would,nt think that the saturn was sooooooooooooooooooo hard to programm for, well it was hard to use the 2 proccesors at once sonce those proccesors shares the same ram wich can be only expanded via an ram expansion pack,or i guess they can alternately use the ram once needed, but that will interrupt speed.
Personally, I think the Playstation version is the best of these two, however, the Saturn version is still fantastic and very faithful to the PS1 original.
One thing I prefer about the Saturn version? ResEvil for Saturn, in the UK/PAL wasn't optimised, thus, I can force the PAL version on my Saturn into 60Hz with full screen display, at full speed. Can't do that with my PAL PS1 version ;-)
The Saturn version also has a battle mode, exclusive monsters, and a couple other extras... of course it is the port of the original PSX version, not the Director's Cut so the SS version does not have the "auto-aim" feature added to the later PS versions... makes the game MUCH harder
playstation version is better, the colours are not as rich as the saturn port. in my opinion the washed out gloomy colours in the PS version fit the games atmosphere more.
@TheFred128 They were captured using a standard composite output. Both consoles can output RGB but I had no method of capturing such a signal at the time.
I think the Saturn footage looks a bit blurry partly because I may have fucked up the compression when capturing it. Yep, most of my earlier videos look kinda rough.
@therealbluedragon i will tell you something that you wont believe... i wont even bleive it.. i got a gamecube just for resident evil 1 remake.. and it looked AMAZING.. then for some reason i returned my gamecube and got a new one.. and it looked horribly jagged and all the HD grpahics was gone... @TheRogueMonk New TV? I know when I first got it I was like WTF, this is unreal and played it over and over then I played it through the wii and thought what the hell is this. It looks crap but then I found out it was the TV is was playing it on
@therealbluedragon you know they say they used a special engine to run resident evil 1 reameke called dolphin the one they used to take pictures of resident evil 1 ..remake to look greate.... well it looked that great with my first gamecube i dont know how and i never experienced it again
@therealbluedragon from what i'm seeing, they're graphically tied but the playstation has somewhat better lighting effects. i don't see what all the fuss was about when the saturn came out.
I actually like the Saturn version of this game better. This shows when a Development company takes the time the Saturn is awesome. Too bad oh well I can still enjoy a lot of the Saturn games do this day so I'm not complaining.
Why are polygons rendered with the wrong gamma on Saturn. It must be hardware related or a dev kit over site because it's wrong on loads of Saturn games.
THE GRAPHICS IN THE SATURN ARE BETTER, AND THE AUDIO IS WAY RICHER AND THE EXCLUSIVE MONSTER THAT IS IN THE SEGA SATURN ONLY! BLOWS THE PS VERSION OUT OF DA PARK!
One thing I noticed was that thought the models were better rendered in the PS version, the Saturn has far smoother animations for the characters. The colors in the Saturn version were more vibrant and look better. In terms of the overall game I have to give it to the Saturn since it also has the battle mode along with everything the PS version has.
The pre-rendered backgrounds and the skins of the models have translated very nicely, so much so that it's very hard to tell that the character models are actually not the same. A shame since the Saturn engine was very good at 3D games and they look more smoother in this. The high contrast of colours in the Saturn version maybe due to it having a limited gamut than the Playstation's.
It was very hard to programme games for the saturn but Sega would have benefitted if they had Resident Evil 2.
playstation version is better yesterday, now and forever. Playstation has lightning, goraud shading, 2d trasparency and more polygons. ANd saturn? noone of this.... Look how the models are well integrated with the background in psx, in the saturn they look like cartoons and VERY blocky. Psx resident evil was and it will be better forever against saturn.
The ps i belive was capable of what they call gouraud sading which is y the characters dont look as blocky. As soneone already said, the saturn version had extra content. Other then that is pretty much even.
Another note... The Saturn port of Resident Evil was handled by Nextech (now Nex Entertainment), who later developed RE Code: Veronica for Dreamcast. The company became a Sega affiliate in 1997, until they reemerged as an independent third-party developer in 2003.
Sega Saturn. Definitely more detailed, more smoother and rich textures. Which says a lot considering I don't own a Sega Saturn nor did I ever play one.:(
Graphically, the PS1 gets the edge here for me. While the Saturn has MUCH better color saturation, its PS1 counterpart has better lighting (for that gen's standards) and the characters/enemies are comprised with more polys. Saturn version seems to have no light source shading whatsoever.
What makes the Saturn version stand out to me in this is a gameplay related addition -- Battle Mode. This was a huge asset in the Saturn version's favor.
@RJTamm93 Heehee, I just prefer the Saturn version because I prefer the Saturn in general. Despite the Saturn version being inferior, I just prefer the Saturn's joypad, boot screen and game packaging. I think the Saturn game cases are more sturdy and look cooler.
@nicholasthetaylor You must be in a pal territory to think Saturn cases are more durable? The plastic ones, although pretty, are extremely easy to break. I agree, the Saturn was and still is my favorite console of all time, but it rarely gets played anymore. Most of my time is taken up by the Dreamcast.
@RJTamm93 Yeah man, I'm from England. I know precisely what you mean. I have Virtua Fighter 2 on American import, and the case just wants to come apart. I like the way the jewel cases are all shiny, but the PAL cses are silky smooth and despite the constant pulling in and out of boxes, sliding against the next boxes, they dont scratch. Love em. Kudos for Dreamcast, though I don't have arcade sticks for my DC (weeps). If I did then I'd play Streefighter 2 and Ikaruga to death on it.
I was saddened when the second resident evil was cancelled for the saturn, even in Japan. Like the PSX version, there's was a prototype made of the beta version.
from a distance the psx version could look a bit better cuz it's less bulky but in every other way saturn looks beter because of more facial details and way more vibrant colors. I'd give this one to saturn.
Oh dear, I forget the PAL versions cut out the head rolling on the floor when you first encounter the zombie cutscene.... *sigh*... you scaredy cat europeans! ;D
@AngelSammy off the top of my head i know for a fact that the game over screen was altered in the US version as was the licker FMV was shorter in the NTSC version also the PAL uk version has a bit more blood
ther may be more but i haven't played the US version of the game in a long time
@zachthezombie I see, I remember playing Biohazard 2 before resident evil 2. I never noticed he licker scene being any different from each other. I've just tried looking for them but I can only find the 17 seconds video which is the scene I know of. If there was one longer or shorter is like to see it if you can locate it.
Imo, the models look nicer on Saturn (weirdly) although it lacks the ability to display transparancies properly and thus the particle and water effects look alot worse. They're the same otherwise.
saturn looks blurry but im wondering if this is how they discovered anti aliasing which is basically what it is. Anti aliasing basically blurs the edges of a character to "hide" any jaggies if you look at the saturn version it doesnt appear to have as many jaggies as playstation version
The Saturn version looks a bit blury to me. The PS version looks sharper and the colours are not washed out. We can´t compare the sound cause it´s only one sound... There should be sound examples of botch versions. The game brings back memories. I´ve still got the good old PS. Not that tiny PSone thing but the REAL deal. Better details on the PS version.
@NoRestart It looks blurry because the Saturn displays the game at a lower resolution. I'd say the PS1 game looks more washed out since everybody is super pale looking while the colours are much richer on the Saturn. Both games use the same sound effects & speech so there is no difference.
@therealbluedragon The video is more compressed on the Saturn and the sounds are a higher bitrate on the playstation version. This probably just means that the developers of the saturn didn't have the same files available as used on the playstation and had to compress the videos and record the sounds themselves. Just a hunch, but most likely reason I reckon, because the Saturn actually had better sound hardware than the PS, although it did fall down a bit when it came to FMV
@therealbluedragon the only major difference in sounds is on saturn the zombies moan differently when shot and when killed. it sounds more aggressive for lack of a better term...
you should try and find an example of it! its pretty interesting!
@NoRestart I use a PSOne instead of my original one. Its cool cos its better made than the original, so it runs cooler and it has a cool LCD screen that you bolt onto it too. The original one was cool for having the phono ports on the back, but they removed them on later versions
I noticed the video frames in the beginning intro are higher on the Playstation than the Saturn, you can see the frame lines on the saturn as you pause the video.
Because the Saturn displays using a richer & brighter colour palette. Sometimes it makes the games look better & sometimes it makes them look really rough. Depends what type of game.
One good thing to point for the Sega Saturn version is that its models are better textured, or at least they are fully textured overall. PlayStation version models rely on flat shading for most of its models, although they are less bulkier in construction. PlayStation version is sharper in detail overall, probably because of higher resolution. Color is once again more vivid on the Sega Saturn, but the PlayStation version has real-time lightning and shading.
the saturn had a weird way of making it's three d polygons. The ps1 was triangles while the saturn was hexagons or something. IT looked nicer in some parts while being harder to program
The Saturn rendered 3D using square polygons called Quadrilaterals. The idea behind it was to maximise the consoles abilities while avoiding increasing the systems power which would make it more expensive to produce & buy.
For example it takes two triangles to make one square so why not render using just squares instead, in theory halving the number of polygons required to create 3D models.
What Sega overlooked is that very few developers at the time knew how to program using quadrilaterals, and even the ones that did found converting everything from triangles to squares was a very time consuming process.
For multi platform games the Saturn code was usually created from the ground up separate from the code used for all the other versions. which is why when you compare the versions side by side, lots of small inconsistencies appear. Croc is a great example of this.
Yeah but the PSX version being darker sort of added to the gritty horror. Same thing happened in RE4 comparing the Gamecube and PS2 versions. It was actually a good thing that the PS2's graphics were less vibrant.
@strykah92 Look at Kenneth's body in 2:40 (PS) and 2:46 (Saturn). The Saturn version is, actually, darker. It's not brighter; it's richer and has a higher contrast. The colors on the playstation usually seem bland.
Because it has a ton of exclusive features not found in the PSX version. It has new enemies, new outfits, the new BATTLE MODE, the Gold Tyrant, Zombie Wesker, and some copies are UNCUT.
Every version of the Japanese version (Bio Hazard) is uncut, which is what I have. Cutscenes (FMV/CG) have more gore and cigarettes.
PSX has better texture maps, but more breakup in the joints of the polygonal characters. Saturn polygonal models are less blocky.
Thanks for this. Am a Sega man at heart but i have to agree that the PS version was the best although the Saturn version was solid in itself. Still the best one of all was the Remake on the Gamecube some years later.
The Saturn game has longer load times & less detailed textures on the enemies & character models. Some of the cutscenes & animations felt like they'd been sped up a little bit when making the jump from the PS1 also lack of lighting makes the Saturn version look a little cartoony in comparison.
Barry & Jill look like they've been hitting the tanning beds.

from a distance the psx version could look a bit better cuz it's less bulky but in every other way saturn looks beter because of more facial details and way more vibrant colors. I'd give this one to saturn.

Oh dear, I forget the PAL versions cut out the head rolling on the floor when you first encounter the zombie cutscene.... *sigh*... you scaredy cat europeans! ;D
AngelSammy 1 year ago
@AngelSammy but at least we got more cut scenes in resident evil 2 and more blood
zachthezombie 11 months ago
@zachthezombie oh, now that I wasn't aware of :s
What other scenes are added?
AngelSammy 11 months ago
@AngelSammy off the top of my head i know for a fact that the game over screen was altered in the US version as was the licker FMV was shorter in the NTSC version also the PAL uk version has a bit more blood
ther may be more but i haven't played the US version of the game in a long time
zachthezombie 11 months ago
@zachthezombie I see, I remember playing Biohazard 2 before resident evil 2. I never noticed he licker scene being any different from each other. I've just tried looking for them but I can only find the 17 seconds video which is the scene I know of. If there was one longer or shorter is like to see it if you can locate it.

Hmm graphically very comparable I had both versions and I just couldn't make up my mind =P

Imo, the models look nicer on Saturn (weirdly) although it lacks the ability to display transparancies properly and thus the particle and water effects look alot worse. They're the same otherwise.

saturn looks blurry but im wondering if this is how they discovered anti aliasing which is basically what it is. Anti aliasing basically blurs the edges of a character to "hide" any jaggies if you look at the saturn version it doesnt appear to have as many jaggies as playstation version
calumknight1984 1 year ago
The Saturn version looks a bit blury to me. The PS version looks sharper and the colours are not washed out. We can´t compare the sound cause it´s only one sound... There should be sound examples of botch versions. The game brings back memories. I´ve still got the good old PS. Not that tiny PSone thing but the REAL deal. Better details on the PS version.
NoRestart 1 year ago 8
@NoRestart It looks blurry because the Saturn displays the game at a lower resolution. I'd say the PS1 game looks more washed out since everybody is super pale looking while the colours are much richer on the Saturn. Both games use the same sound effects & speech so there is no difference.
therealbluedragon 1 year ago 10
@therealbluedragon The video is more compressed on the Saturn and the sounds are a higher bitrate on the playstation version. This probably just means that the developers of the saturn didn't have the same files available as used on the playstation and had to compress the videos and record the sounds themselves. Just a hunch, but most likely reason I reckon, because the Saturn actually had better sound hardware than the PS, although it did fall down a bit when it came to FMV
nicholasthetaylor 1 year ago
@therealbluedragon the only major difference in sounds is on saturn the zombies moan differently when shot and when killed. it sounds more aggressive for lack of a better term...
you should try and find an example of it! its pretty interesting!
sonicfan1981 10 months ago
@NoRestart I use a PSOne instead of my original one. Its cool cos its better made than the original, so it runs cooler and it has a cool LCD screen that you bolt onto it too. The original one was cool for having the phono ports on the back, but they removed them on later versions
nicholasthetaylor 1 year ago
@NoRestart "Better details on the PS version." Sorry but if you look at the SS version you will see wich game has more details...believe me.
You should clean you glasses :P Joke please do not rage :D

I like the Saturn colors, although I would say that the two versions are very comparable graphically.
One thing that was better in the Saturn version are the knee and elbow joints, it looks more natural and less like two lumps of clay stuck together.

PSX looks to have better shading and at times better texturing. It also seems to run smoother too.

La versión de psx tiene mayor calidad en los gráficos de los personajes.

I noticed the video frames in the beginning intro are higher on the Playstation than the Saturn, you can see the frame lines on the saturn as you pause the video.

ps1 looks clearer and the colors look more natural

Saturn wins here and I tell you why... Jill from PS version is kinda blond (dark blond hair), while she is brunette in Saturn's version. (7:52)
Brunettes FTW Hehehehehe =)

Because the Saturn displays using a richer & brighter colour palette. Sometimes it makes the games look better & sometimes it makes them look really rough. Depends what type of game.
therealbluedragon 1 year ago
One good thing to point for the Sega Saturn version is that its models are better textured, or at least they are fully textured overall. PlayStation version models rely on flat shading for most of its models, although they are less bulkier in construction. PlayStation version is sharper in detail overall, probably because of higher resolution. Color is once again more vivid on the Sega Saturn, but the PlayStation version has real-time lightning and shading.

the saturn had a weird way of making it's three d polygons. The ps1 was triangles while the saturn was hexagons or something. IT looked nicer in some parts while being harder to program
Christian3522 2 years ago
The Saturn rendered 3D using square polygons called Quadrilaterals. The idea behind it was to maximise the consoles abilities while avoiding increasing the systems power which would make it more expensive to produce & buy.
For example it takes two triangles to make one square so why not render using just squares instead, in theory halving the number of polygons required to create 3D models.
therealbluedragon 2 years ago
What Sega overlooked is that very few developers at the time knew how to program using quadrilaterals, and even the ones that did found converting everything from triangles to squares was a very time consuming process.
For multi platform games the Saturn code was usually created from the ground up separate from the code used for all the other versions. which is why when you compare the versions side by side, lots of small inconsistencies appear. Croc is a great example of this.
therealbluedragon 2 years ago
True also triangles can give a more rounded look not to mention the fact the PS1 could display far more ploygons per second than the Saturn.
Badassbab 2 years ago
The lack of lighting really is a real flaw in the Saturn version.
And the FMVs look worse than in the PSX version due to Saturn's not having a native codec.

I played Resident evil 2 on N64, so I guess I don't mind some blurry textures

I love how the Saturn version is more bright and colorful.
MajBlood 2 years ago
Yeah but the PSX version being darker sort of added to the gritty horror. Same thing happened in RE4 comparing the Gamecube and PS2 versions. It was actually a good thing that the PS2's graphics were less vibrant.
strykah92 2 years ago
@strykah92 Look at Kenneth's body in 2:40 (PS) and 2:46 (Saturn). The Saturn version is, actually, darker. It's not brighter; it's richer and has a higher contrast. The colors on the playstation usually seem bland.
CervantesXV 1 year ago
I think Saturn version is better.
Why?
Because it has a ton of exclusive features not found in the PSX version. It has new enemies, new outfits, the new BATTLE MODE, the Gold Tyrant, Zombie Wesker, and some copies are UNCUT.
Every version of the Japanese version (Bio Hazard) is uncut, which is what I have. Cutscenes (FMV/CG) have more gore and cigarettes.
PSX has better texture maps, but more breakup in the joints of the polygonal characters. Saturn polygonal models are less blocky.
Suplexmachine 2 years ago
Thanks for this. Am a Sega man at heart but i have to agree that the PS version was the best although the Saturn version was solid in itself. Still the best one of all was the Remake on the Gamecube some years later.
SAMTHEMANTHATCAN 2 years ago
The Saturn game has longer load times & less detailed textures on the enemies & character models. Some of the cutscenes & animations felt like they'd been sped up a little bit when making the jump from the PS1 also lack of lighting makes the Saturn version look a little cartoony in comparison.
Barry & Jill look like they've been hitting the tanning beds.
therealbluedragon 2 years ago
oops! Almost forgot, the Saturn version has some exclusive enemies, double the Tyrants & an unlockable challenge mode
