Although this is probably the best documentary ever. I am don't like it when Russell swears in front of the old dude 6:13 i dunno why. :/ great documentary though
If you love Kerouac like myself and Russell, check out my new book Road Trippn' (by Sean McLaughlin), a tribute to Jack; youth; Freedom; Love; God; sex, drugs, rock'n'roll and America set across the country and culminating in the streets of NYC, a month prior to the attacks of 9/11. Check it out at Amazon.com and support another working class artist from one of America's other former industrial glory towns - Cleveland this carnation around instead of Lowell.
My favorite thing about people who don't like him will comment several times at different times which means you've seen this multiple times. Which means I'm implying that may secretly have a crush on him and actually adore yes adore his comedy. And I bet your an english comic who is jealous.
@RollingOrmond loud-yes. attention seeking-definitely (but hes brutally honest so i dont mind). englishman- The best comedians in history were english, whats your point?...... but unfunny? listen to some of his bbc radio 2 stuff. he's notoriously quick in interviews. Improvisational master, and brilliantly anarchaic and carelessly witty. Most of your favourite comedians likely love him: american and english. And neal cassady would probably have worshipped him. What else can I say? I'm a fan.
@yippeekayay1 After hearing two minutes of Brand's raging mediocrity, Kerouac would've smashed his annoying face in. It's true, if only a time machine could bring these two together!
@RollingOrmond naahh ive gota disagree pal. but im sure kerouac and cassady wouldve loved and agreed with your outlook on life, as well as your standards of character judgement... well done.
I want to see Mystery (the pro pickup artist) and Russell go to a bar and compete to pick up the most girls. Or pick one up the fastest. I dunno, something like that. But it has to be done.
dude he's british. They are usually cooler but he is nothing compared to kerouac or cassady. He seems arrogant being like i know about this stuff and in on the road kerouac just tells it like it is in a stream of consciousness rather than boasting and shit. I like brand usually and think biritish people are usually funny but it doesn't work so well here for some reason. But that's just my opinion.
The opportunity to see things like this are why YouTube is an amazing thing, and things like the bed intruder and Chocolate rain and the damage they occasionally do to the collective consciousness are, at the moment at least acceptable prices to pay. In five years on the other hand...well we can judge what stands when the dust settles.
This is more supposed to be one persons view of Kerouac's writing & the impact & effect that his style of living had on him. You could get a stuffy academics view on his use of language and the psychological effects of his actions on himself & those around him but I guess it wouldn't be as easy to sell to a TV network as putting a "celebrity" on it. Also I think this was intended to combat the "Daily Mail" attitude to Russell & the belief by many that he was not intelligent and erudite .
No, I've no moral objections to how he lives his life - neither did I imply such a thing. It's just the fact that he took a lot of drugs and did a lot of "wild living" does not in any way qualify him to be an authority on one of the greatest writers of American twentieth century literature. And that's my point, that this program should have been more about Jack Kerouac and less about Russell Brand.
And there was me thinking this was going to be all about Jack Kerouac and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. But no, it's all about Russell Brand and his attention seeking shenanigans. What a shame.
whoa whoa whoa..hang about 3:49 theres a little old lady in the corner of the cafe bearing in mind this cafe is in the middle of the us of a,wearing a fucking arsenal shirt!!! have a word russell : )
It is indeed refreshing when someone famous/popular has respect for the written word. Perhaps many beautiful yet seldom used terms will no longer be considered 'big words.' I can only hope.
Anyway, I love how Russell Brand makes witty banter seem so damn cool.
@20SAULiO91 I know, you just don't wanna let him go to waste. He's such a talent. We need more. He and Russ need to get back to working together, or even solo Matt. I almost have this image of Matt crashing through the doors of Russell's wedding, waving a small pin as a weapon and complaining about a ridiculous illness, and the two running off to make wonderful comedy again...
@20SAULiO91 That would be nice...I mean they went through so much together. Appearently Matt got married last year. Wonder if Russ was there...He married a girl named Katie, strangely.
@20SAULiO91 Yus! Oh that's good. However, I have heard the plot of "Bad Father" and it is insanely like the movie "Fallen Angels" (or something to that effect) staring Robert DeNiro and Sean Penn. Russell's a conman hiding as a priest in a small town, they are escaped convicts who pose as priests in a small town.
@LittleMissTeatime Well, i cant help but think 'Sister Act' with Whoopie Goldberg which has to be one of the greatest films ever made, so i hold out hope...
@20SAULiO91 Oh yeah...don't know why I jump for the lame one nobody remembers and forget about one of the most "always-watched-at-christmas-time-but-not-actually-a-christmas-movie" movies ever...
@20SAULiO91 Don't worry, I am aware that I am far cooler than those who mock me for not watching Jersey Shore. I mean, really, of all the things to mock a person for...
@20SAULiO91 Don't worry, I am aware that I am far cooler than those who mock me for not watching Jersey Shore. I mean, really, of all the things to mock a person for...
"...for years he roamed the country like an oboe..." Like an oboe? What? Oh, like a hobo, got it. Actually ran through my mind that he said this. Silly me.
I say 'well done' to Russell and Matt for bringing Jack Kerouac to the attention of a new younger generation. Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Son Volt's Jay Farrar are releasing a CD of songs dedicated to Jack Kerouac in October called 'One Fast Move or I'm Gone'. If you want to join a group/thread of Kerouac fans search through 'Yahoo! Groups' to Subterraneansgroup or Beat_Happening - be good to have ya!
I love it when they are looking at the love list and comes upon Spanish Communism and Russell says, "He's having sex with abstract concepts. Democracy... God, that was a hell of a night, it was very fair." Then later when Matt teases him about his list... "Girl with one toe and hairy shins, that girl at the bus stop." He's so sharp and lovely.
I have watched this a few times now. Russell is brilliant, but I wonder if Matt will continue to be in the background. I think Matt is an exceptional character, dazingly funny and yes, very handsome. Hopefully Matt won't hide... he's very underrated!!
Wow, three of my favorite things all together: Russell Brand, the White Stripes and Jack Kerouac. I read On the Road when I was 19 and was entralled, too.
well, i should say, if you understood the book, and dug it right...that the writers revelance is minimal...Jack Kerouac woulda said the same thing probly.
Not that i strictly act that way myself. I enjoy knowing alot about the people i read.
interesting guy. i enjoy listening to him.

Wow, three of my favorite things all together: Russell Brand, the White Stripes and Jack Kerouac. I read On the Road when I was 19 and was entralled, too.

why wouldnt it?

well, i should say, if you understood the book, and dug it right...that the writers revelance is minimal...Jack Kerouac woulda said the same thing probly.
Not that i strictly act that way myself. I enjoy knowing alot about the people i read.
:) x

before the names sal paradise and dean moriarty were edited in it was written as "jack kerouac" and "neal cassady"
id say understanding the writer is an important key to understand the book...in this case. =)

hehe, yeah i know what you mean...im finding hard to argue because i totally agree with you :)
Its a strange situation.
But the only thing i would add is that, IMO, theres two types of readers.
Us n them, I guess.
