The thing about this is Mariah put her all into that note @ 2:52 because always does when she puts her hand to her ear, but it seems like all Patti did was breathe and she hit hers, and then Patti still sung that note over Mariah. Mariah did excellent, but it seems she had to try a little harder than Patti did.

@AntiBasher2 most sopranos can actually hit the whistle register, its not a uncommon talent, it just takes practice. however, what makes mariah a rarity is that she is actually an alto singing with a high vocal range. its a unique thing for her because of her vocal type. as for the supposed attempted whistle note, we would have been able to hear it over a belt, what most people dont get is that she is pressing in her ear piece so she can hear her self better. not to do the note.

And isn't Mariah a natural alto or contralto? Her lower register is my favorite and she seems comfortable singing in the lower registers, but she also seems comfortable singing her high soprano whistle notes.

Mariah incorporates all vocal registers into her music... her falsetto is breathtaking... her runs are awesome... her technique is on point... the only thing she lacks is power (which is what all the others have). @aussiechic06 when mariah launched her first album, she was criticized as sounding very like whitney. her whistles were impressive then but she wouldn't even have thought of it without the original whistler, minnie riperton. mc had a great range but when she performed with greater vocalists as aretha, whitney, celine and patti, mc's voice would always take the backseat. nowadays, mc hardly whistle nor sing live, and her falsetto is nothing but a diffusing gas tank. so was she really the "best"?
Patti is a stronger performer, but Mariah is probably the only singer (other than Whitney Houston back in the day) that can hold her own with Ms. LaBelle. For me its not really about who can hit the highest note, its about who can bring me to my feet and they are both capable of it.

The thing about this is Mariah put her all into that note @ 2:52 because always does when she puts her hand to her ear, but it seems like all Patti did was breathe and she hit hers, and then Patti still sung that note over Mariah. she didn't dump her. you can hear mariah's vibrato while patti belts and then hear it stop at 2:54. I'm not sure if she hit a whistle note but I can definitely hear mariah and patti. Either way, they both sound awesome together.

Respond to this video...Mariah uses a vibrato on a C7 and then on a G7...She's Operatically trained. Shanice is awesome, but every person has a particular color, and even if Patti's voice and Shanice's Chest Voices are very similar in the gritty, treble-rich soul sound, the piercing ,thin note yo speak of, isn't there, period. @AntiBasher2 most sopranos can actually hit the whistle register, its not a uncommon talent, it just takes practice. however, what makes mariah a rarity is that she is actually an alto singing with a high vocal range. its a unique thing for her because of her vocal type. as for the supposed attempted whistle note, we would have been able to hear it over a belt, what most people dont get is that she is pressing in her ear piece so she can hear her self better. not to do the note.

So for many sopranos her whistling ability is fairly COMMON. About that "whistle note", it's OBVIOUS she DID it when she TRIED to hit those 4 successive high notes with Patti. (See 2:52 to 2:55.) And isn't Mariah a natural alto or contralto? Mariah incorporates all vocal registers into her music... her falsetto is breathtaking... her runs are awesome... her technique is on point... the only thing she lacks is power (which is what all the others have). @aussiechic06 when mariah launched her first album, she was criticized as sounding very like whitney. her whistles were impressive then but she wouldn't even have thought of it without the original whistler, minnie riperton. mc had a great range but when she performed with greater vocalists as aretha, whitney, celine and patti, mc's voice would always take the backseat. nowadays, mc hardly whistle nor sing live, and her falsetto is nothing but a diffusing gas tank. so was she really the "best"?
