Missed my train back to Shrewsbury from Euston station back in 87 and only had this song to keep me company all night untill the following morning while sitting on the platform! Great Stranglers Music
Ive always been a massive Stranglers fan since i 1st heard Rattus in 77,and I can honestly say I was fkn mortified when somebody at work told me that the chorus wasnt "Better watch out for the schoolies!!!"-Well,it WAS the Stranglers, and theyve never been afraid of a dogy lyric have they?...."Wot an old codger I am.....nowadays!! lol-Still a great song tho !
I work with a 20 something Indian named Sandeep (our IT guy, can you believe that?) and when he walks past I occasionally sing "better watch out for the sandeep" After a couple of years he still has no idea.
A funky, atmospheric, endlessly catchy and intelligent song by a profoundly original band! Like Joe Jackson, Talk Talk, Bowie, one of those rare, wonderful bands who go wherever their muse leads them on their musical journey regardless of what's expected of them by label or fans. Much respect and love for these guys. Damn I love this tune! Thanks for sharing!
Music with a message are the ADD youth of today listening?? Mmm I'll take that back...or should I ?
Also my favourite No Mercy/ Stranglers More/ Sisters of Mercy Love and Rockets Ball of Confusion to name a few To me that was THE 80 's !! Thanks for post !
Ah....college radio before the word "alternative" was even concieved.
Surprised I can even remember this song, after all those many nights spent buzzing{literally} around town with WCNI {Connecticut College} radio on my Honda Civics tunebox.
Man this song brings back memories. It's one of those beautifully flowing melodies that just carries you along. A million thanks for the quality post.
@skiwijoe I was a dj back then also used to spin this track sometimes with Our Darkness Ann Clark or Love and Rockets Yin Yang >The 90's rave still good depending on tracks selected told a story then got predictable and even now :))but you know and i know that maybe... we are just getting jaded There is a lot of shit out there or maybe we are not getting the vibe of the new tracks even the Indie stuff of today tries to mimic the 80's underground but sometimes lacks conviction or is it me ?
Agree with you there Sid. Saw the Stranglers at an outdoor stadium where it poured buckets. The entire crowd danced madly and passed joints all around. It was like being at a mini-Woodstock :)
Also saw the Heads at the same location shortly before they broke up. What a fun band, so creative and silly, yet also serious and thoughtful.
Am I the only one who has been compelled to create a playlist after listening to this song, Always The Sun, Ghost Train and such? How great the post-punk men in black were.
My favourite song from Stranglers. Oh how I love this band!

This is my theme song. Everywhere I go it plays and people look at me in awe, then, start to dance around 80s style.

@7878Roland I recall on my first few listening that I thought it was "Better watch out for the CITY"
That works too. That's all too true.

You believe them
You need them
For what's round the river bend
Make sure that you're recieving the signals they send

The stranglers were light years ahead of their time and to be honest are still ahead of most of the junk being churned out today.

Hearing this makes me sad that we gave all our vinyl away ...

Even worse than that is the fact I broke most of my fathers beatle lp's when I was a kid. Thought they made good frisbies. Doh!

Could have been even worse. You could have melted them on the car dashboard in summer. At least you had some fun :)
