Barbra is always great but I have to confess I like Vicky Leandros' version of this song more. Better intonation and emotion, makes me feel she really means it.
@KrysteQ1997 We must all assume that those of you who prefer Violetta's version are joking...or you are polish nationalists...because, truthfully, she is dreadful. Maybe as a Las Vegas showgirl, but serious contender to Streisand...?? Sorry, no.
Whats very odd is here shes doing a french album right? and here she does an english version of this song,But yet a few years earlier she introduced this very song on Color Me Barbra in french??? go figure! Maybe thats why is album wasnt as big a seller as alot of her earlier records were
@Evanescence140 We all assume you are joking, of course. Streisand wasn't declared THE female voice of the century without good reason. Great reason, in fact. Nobody comes close........
This always reminds me of an old boyfriend when things were going wrong. This song was just out of Barbra's album (yes, that long ago)! It became a song a played a great deal when I was alone, crying with my new freedom! It still brings my back to that time.
I agree that this is the better version....precisely because she sings it as if she is supposed to mean when there is a dark undercurrent of irony. Streisand did this superbly--in her dark rendition of a usually goofy "Happy Days Are Here Again", in the "Funny Lady" song written for her, "How Lucky Can You Get?, and here, I think, the best of the lot. It is brilliantly sarcastic.
Yes, comparisons are odious but, keying off the reference to Scott Walker I eagerly clicked on his version - Barbra's version is head and shoulders above that in subtleties, emotional content, nuance, complexities. This rates close to Nessum Dorma in the tear-jerk factor and I'm happily married.
Wonderful, powerful and utterly, utterly sincere. Though I love Scott to bits and pieces and beyond, this is a woman's version and it's just as poignant and true, though so very different from Scott's, who himself -let's agree here -has never been afraid of doing 'over the top'.. .Sorry to disagree with you, Janicead ;)
I'm sorry, I've been a Barbra fan for a long time, but Scott Walker's version far trumps this. Scott is subtler and more touching. His voice catches the irony much better than Barbra's typical over-the-top rendition.
Yes it is the same song as" Non Ces't Rien". I remember them both very well. I was so young and so innocent then. When I just turned 21 I used to go to an obscure little gay bar, the only gay bar in my area. I would spend all my money playing the juke box , listening to Barbara sing both versions and sit in the corner booth with tears in my eyes, a lonely innocent little boy . You know what, I am the same little boy I was then, 44 years ago, but with the scars of life . I Love You Barbara.
"Simple me" ... Much more than simple you, Barbra.
BTW, does anyone knows why half or so of the times, like in this video, by clicking on the "HQ" icon the effect is the reverse? That is, the "normal" version contains enhanced+stereo sound and the HQ version contains poor/mono sound?
I have listened to almost all the different singers doing this song but only when I found Barbra's I really felt that this is the best expression of my own feelings. She really feels the songs, not just sing them. Violetta Villas is to Barbara what is a movie to the original book.
It's funny - I used to have Streisand LPs as a teenager, but now I hear them, and she sounds so cold to me. She was technically perfect, but songs like this all sound like self-absorbed anthems to me now; all I'm hearing is Babs' enormous ego. The Jack Jones version is so sensitive and nuanced by comparison. Now I want to hear the Violetta Vilas cover, seeing these comments.
you can see Violetta's video clip for this song on my channel. Violetta's version is recorded in dual-voice (voice recorded on a voice, so she sounds quite traumatic)
this song is so powerful and no matter how many times i listen to it, i still get chills. barbra streisand's version is very soulful and powerful but Violetta villas's version was of course the original version and she has a pretty good voice so you have to give her some credit. great song-can really relate to it esp. if youve been in a bad relationship with your bf,husband, fiance used you/cheated on you. click the thumbs up icon if you agree with me. thanks!:D
Sorry, Villas version may be preferred by some (why, I can't possibly fathom...she's like a spanish Dolly Parton)but Stresand has the voice....and the talent, hands down, above most other female singers of her generation and onwards.
This is a pure example of what Streisand did so wonderfully and inventively--singing against the grain of the lyrics (more popularly done on "Happy Days Are Here Again"), the words being joyous and the ironic voice being doubtful. Brilliant.
Actually, Streisand is not the first to do this. Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson all came before her..and many others. I'll admit though that this is my favorite cover of this particular song. This is back when Barbra was still an interesting singer. She became so boring by the 1980s...
Nancy Wilson's take on "Lus Life" is a little less over the top.
Wish it were online for comparison.

Back to live the life I'd known
