This doesn't sound like Deep Purple. It's no wonder this album was overlooked. But the biggest problem is not the absence of Gillan, even though JLT' voice is too soft for DP; the biggest problem is the music. Too many songs with down-beat tempos. What was Blackmore thinking? That's not what DP is about. But I barely see it as a Rainbow album too. I prefer listening to Stranger In Us All than to this.

I'm a Reel Deep PURPLE fan.. I Like mark II - III, actually I do LOVE BLACKMORE!! But, ok, remove the popy production of that song, imagine a more rough production, and this makes REAL FUCKIN' GOOD SONG!!! Imagine this song sing by Coverdale in Mark III and it's a HIT!!

Gillan should leave the band, Blackmore come back with Lord and Coverdale... and God, it could work again... Because, yes, they didn't make a single hit since Richie's leaving!

I've never understood the mentality of the "original line-up only" people. Not just with Purple but any band. guys leave and bands move on, get over yourselves. As a music fan I think it's interesting when a guy from one band joins another, like when Gillian joined Sabbath for an album or Corabi with Motley Crue or Paul Rogers in Queen

@MentalRob I agree, people should be broad minded. However, in most cases, a so-called original line-up has been responsible for creating a definitive and distinctive sound. Gillan/Blackmore/Lord did that for Mk2. Ozzy/Iommi/Butler created the Sabbath sound and in fact an entire genre. No wonder people are nostalgic. As for JLT, he can at best be accepted as an interesting oddity in the life of DP.

One of my favorite songs, ever, could have done without seeing Turner in this video though! A much better album too than the dreadul "Battle Rages On" where Gillan was forced back on Blackmore and had to come up with lyrics and melodies after the fact.

According to Lord, Joe ruined the song 'Love conquers all', when he came in with his typical mediocre love-song lyrics. According to Lord, it had the potential to be a great tune, kind of like 'Soldier Of Fortune' or 'When a Blind man cries'. He wanted Roger to do the lyrics, but Ritchie gave Turner "free hands", so he ended up writing them. I like the song though.
