That is true, but remember, they came to Disney with the concept and script. Disney wanted to make a film that would give them relevance in the age of Spielberg and Lucas so taking a chance on TRON to capture some of that mature audience was a important move.
I remember when Disney's other production arm was known as Buena Vista. And as a child of the 80's (i'm 31) I do miss Touchstone pictures. Some great gems came out of that studio.
Thats what Lisberger and Co. were trying to do-making a movie aimed at younger audiences so I don't understand your point.
Essentially you're saying that Disney somehow had a hand in steering the film in the direction Lisberger and Co. were already trying to go in? Huh? I don't recall Tron in its early stages being anything more than what it became. A fun sci fi kids movie.
You then brought up 3 points unrelated to the discussion at hand (ratings, rights ownership and ex Disney employees).
Furthermore, alot of people have left Disney and been critical of them and have had successful careers. Does Don Bluth ring a bell?
As for the rating thing, what makes you think it wouldn't be at least pg rated? I seriously hope you weren't hoping this would be rated R cause that would be silly.
The point is that whether or not Disney interfered, Disney allowed Lisberger to make the film he wanted to make and its all there on the screen. The rest is meaningless.
Of course Disney had a hand in editing, but that often doesn't mean a thing, certainly not in this case since Lisberger was very involved in the editing process if the dvd and LD documentaries are anything to go by. I seriously doubt there was any tension between Lisberger and Disney as you may(for whatever reason) think. And what does Disney still owning the rights mean anyway?
interesting. i was just now noticing some of the bold visuals such as costume and stage design remind me of the punk styles seen in the original DUNE. i like it.
But I have a Big Question 1st of all He was not trapped in that machine & The Software name was something else it wasn't called Tron untill one of the guy made a Securty System called Tron & the Arcade scene clearly its showing the machine Tron thats not right the game name is Space something something am confused or the story suck i am waiting for this movie like any one else but the trailer doesn't make since wish Tron 2 my best
One of the games was called "Space Paranoids". I'm not sure about the whole Tron thing, but Flynn did indeed come back to the real world at the end of the original. So possibly he goes back afterwards? we will have to find out why he does because the director gave a shot-by-shot commentary on this trailer and says that Flynn has recreated the MCP in a more advanced way. but why? we'll have to find out xD
Anyone know the name of the track that starts at 1:10? it sounds similar to something in 'The Fountain' soundtrack...is it part of Tron's soundtrack or is there any way to find the song outside the trailer?...the trailer looks fantastic by the way.
This is gonna be the movie that makes me break down and finally buy a Blu-Ray player, if the 1080p trailer is anything to go by. It looks so fucking crisp. My god.
If I can recall correctly from the commentaries on both the Laserdisc and DVD (which are both different), as well as the featurettes, Disney was pretty much hands off during the making of this film. Which was quite fascinating considering they were bankrolling something that had never been done before by a freshman director. Steven Lisberger nor did any of the producers ever state that Disney had "screwed up" their vision. From the sounds of things, they did exactly what they set out to do.
The visual style is just so....I don't know how to explain how pleased I am with it. I love the original to death (I am a TRON collector), but this here has me super excited all over again.
For me, it would be yes since I was not impressed by Avatar visually. James Cameron just had a lot more money and time to perfect what other directors could have done if they had his clout.
That's a little more interesting. I'll actually be quite happy to settle with that - at least the format's not being used as an extension, more a stylistic choice.
I would say no. But it is recommended if you can/are willing to get past the film's 1982 visuals (which are fine with me since I grew up on this movie and remember all the merchandise).
I would say, track down a copy, open your mind and enjoy this great, semi-underrated 80's sci fi gem.
@EviltribbleAuctions yeah that's cool. I think Castor is supposed to be a wild showman character with hints of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust persona, i think that was done on purpose, just as there some retro 80's bits here and there in the film it seems.
No, that's Michael Sheen, who is best known for his role as Tony Blair in "The Queen". But yes, his character does look an awful lot like David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. persona
trongasm, and i aint even seen the original yet :D, i just hope the makers of the game to this dont wimp out to the masses and have a sense of physics and countersteering. but wowie..i have a sudden urge to neon-whore my garage
this movie looks raw, and the music is really good too

the first movie of tron
We moved from a world of two dimensions
known in the arcades to a world in third dimension
was a dense and complex story
a cult film.
This new film offers very good visual effects,
more light and a history achieve any significance?

This looks absolutely amazing and the very fact that it's been shot in cinemascope means its spectacle will have nothing to do with 3D.

question, do I have to watch Tron 1 before I watch Tron 2.0?
malizlewa 1 year ago
@malizlewa Probably not, but I think you will love Tron 2 much more if you understand the story from the original and how it carries on into the 2nd.
Plus, the original Tron (1982!) was a benchmark in film making history, so you probably should watch it. It's legendary :)
I just rewatched it last night over my excitement for the 2nd hehe
