Do any of you what IEM's are? In-ear monitors. They hear what they're playing through the small earpieces, not through the big amplifier stacks we the audience do. They didn't know the sound had gone off AT ALL, because only the big speakers failed, not their whole sound equipment. Bono and the guys were sill hearing themselves play, that's in fact why they didn't understand some of the booing and the strange audience behaviour.
@u2santos They probably didn't hear the boo's, but if you're trying to say that they don't hear anything outside their IEM's you're not entirely correct. You will feel when a 120kw sound system stops working, especially with all the subs under the stage! He didn't stop singing by choice!
@JBLisbetter If you watch a video with the whole song, you'll realize they kept on playing the song in perfect timing. In fact, a few days back, a full IEM-feed recording of the concert surfaced, and you can see that they didn't stop playing and Bono didn't stop singing at all.
I've uploaded the song for you to check it out: goear (dot) com/listen/a4d686c/walk-on-u2 ... The sound drops out at 1:19 (although there are several small failures in the seconds prior to that), and comes back at 2:26.
The problem for U2 that night is, if they had stopped to restart the song then they would have had to have cut another song from the set list as they are restricted to bylaws which make them finish at a specific time, any further over and they get fined massively! Shame people boo them, I didn't I made sure I was one of the thousands who sang with them and carried them through the song!!!
That had to happen during one of my all time fave songs didnt it!! As for the booing...i think the people had every right to boo....most had paid a LOT of money to hear the band...so i can understand their frustration
I was there near the front at the outer circle. i was just singing along we the people round me.. I thought the booing was really disrespectful. It was'nt u2's fault.. To be honest i dont think they knew about at the time. Great night and an awesome show they put on... Really hope they come back to bonny Scotland soon...
Let me make the comment as a sound engineer that the desk they were using is called a Digidesign D Show and it works by using two snakes (using BNC if anyone knows what that is) and i've noticed that when using this desk for the brief period the mix rack is unaware of issues until you manually trip the redundant snake by unplugging the first snake.
The point is if the cable breaks the desk is unaware of what is happening and doesn't notify the operator.
I loved the tour there it was great, but I hated when the sound went away, not because I couldn't hear the song but i didn't want anybody to boo them =(
One little hitch in sound through no fault of their own and some so-called fans start booing, glad it was only a minority as the rest of us sung with the band.
Bono showed his professionalism to continue right till sound came back.
I was at this concert & I had an amazing time I think the people who were booing the band were idiots as it was not the bands fault that the sound had went off
In fact the band still play because the returns in their earpiece was still working...So They may have not seen that the audience did not have sound..
well sed driscoll360 .....that could have easily killed the whole concert and atmosphere but they brought it back brilliantly!!!!! i was in the inner circle and everyone ther was singing with them even when it cut out but you could hear some eejits booing
I could here the audio dropping out through the previous song and when that song in the video started, his personal earpiece foldback went down too. Bono looked off stage at the sound man to let him know something was wrong. They did the right thing and played profesionally till the sound came back on. I could feel their pain and his face showed it. The only thing audible was the bass back-line amp and the click from the drumsticks on the electronic kit. Awsome stage, good performance.
True Professionalism from the guys ......I was standing in centre of park facing the stage and they didnt falter ........Just kept going throughout .
I was filming when the sound went down , stuck my cam away and started singing hoping everyone would join in , only one guy did , most started Booing .....I was embarrassed .........The Best EVER U2 gig has one little hitch and people boo :(
Looks really strange - a massive crowd, U2 on stage performing, but making no sound at all LOL
It's amazing how they didn't f**k up the song and continued as if nothing happened

lol @ irony of him singing on through the glitch, and when the sound comes on it's the chorus: "walk on"

I thought it was part of the show to begin with.
Pure professionalism though and yes it was embarrassing when folk started booing.
It's electrical equipment ffs these things do happen.

I'm not sure. I do remember him saying, "They shouldn't host 2 events on one night, its bad luck."
Don't know if he was referring to the sound glitch or to Celtic's 2-0 defeat to aresanal though. lol

I almost shit myself when that happened. But they never lost their cool did they?
you'd think for all that expensive staging and equipment, it would actually work ok?! lol
what an awesome gig it was!

Did Bono say something to apologize? I think they weren't aware of anything...
