Clearly you haven't read the book. They sucked out the originality, and made it as forgettable as any other movie. In the book, he isn't just fighting dumb zombies. They're more like vampires, and they evolve. There's this role reversal aspect to it, they see him as the boogeyman basically. They're scared of him, and at the end they publicly execute him. They see him as the last original human--hence I am legend.
