I tried the stuff as a sample in the store when I was a kid, and loved it. So I begged my mom to get me some. Once I got it home, however, I thought it was the most disgusting stuff I ever tried making a sandwich with. No wonder it didn't last!!!
The actress is delightfully daffy. No wonder that it didn't make your mouth stick together since it was mostly lubricant. The kind of had food that made your ___ slick, sorry for the image. Still surprised that I ate any of that but those were the days for experimentation.
When I was in college I worked in the factory where this was made. It was the Kraft plant in Champaign, Illinois. My time there was from the Fall of 1973 to late in 1975. The peanut butter line was started during that time and didn't last very long. They gave us free samples. It seemed pretty good, but college kids will eat anything. They still make Velveeta and Cheez Whiz. By comparison it should have been a huge success. Go figure.
I just mixed peanut butter together with vanilla frosting and it tastes JUST like the vanilla one. I would imaging the same thing would happen with chocolate frosting.
I finally talked my Mom into buying a jar, so we got the chocolate and peanut butter. It was horrible! Never bought it again. With all the sugar we ate as kids I'm surprised we're not all overweight and borderline diabetics. Oh wait! I guess we are!
Kool-Aid, Koogle, Freakies, etc. How'd we ever survive through the 70's? Thank goodness there were healthy alternatives like Cap'n Crunch, Cocoa Puffs and Super Sugar Crisp!
@pictureisup1 wait a min... now that I watch it again, I think they had him do that on purpose. He did it twice! Like he's trying to get a word in because mom is just rambling on.
it was the 70s and I still have an empty jar! I found it in the basement of my parents house filled with nails on my dads workbench, I do not know if I am correct but I THINK they took it away because it did NOT contain any peanuts, BUT wouldn't this be a good product to have NOW with all the schools banning peanut butter and all the peanut allergies?
I'm confused, does it taste like peanuts or does it taste like chocolate, vanilla and banana. And what is it actually made of if she says "actually tastes like peanuts". It's like wow, with the right additives, this dog turd actually tastes like peanuts.Yeah, whatever it is made of causes my hair to come out in clumps, but at least it does not stick to the roof of my mouth.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe you found a commercial for this product!!! I used to LOVE this as a kid, especially the bananna Koogle! You, bkdurham, are automatically awesome, in my book!!!!
Well, sort of like Nutella. Except Nutella is hazelnut, and Koogle had more flavors than chocolate...my personal favorite was cinnamon! I really miss it!
man every body acts like im making it up when i ask them if they remember this awsome peanut butter sure do appriciate the video would love to see the one with the koogle man dancing around
@Sparkytrash I remember! Thing is that I have nystagmus, which makes my eyes have more noticeable lateral movement than most people do, like the monster did in these ads. I was in junior high at the time this came out and I caught hell for it. Thankfully, the product was apparently a bust and disappeared from store shelves not long afterward.
@tucsonia You were not alone. I don't have nystagmus, but because of my "eyeful" expressions, Koogle was my nick-name in junior high also. Those were some long a** bus rides to school.
Oh My god!! I remember this as a kid. Where's the commercial where they say "you can koogle anything!" "You can koogle a nose!" I remember that one...
Thank you for posting koogle. I was beginning to think this peanut butter was something I made up in my own imagination because every time I bring it up to people, nobody seems to know what I'm talking about including my own mother who bought it for me.LOL I loooved cinnamon.
@pinkbreezee Right there with you on this...posting this to my little sister and niece's FB page--along with Freakies cereal and The Bugaloos TV show!
There was another commercial where the jar (with the eyes moving) sang the jingle "...you'll love koogle with the koo-koo-koogly eyes." Same song you hear on this one.
honestly- I love the blast from the past, and I'm no processed food snob, but koogle was the worst-tating crap that every infiltrated my lunch box back in the day. It tasted like flavored clay; I literally had to throw the sandwiches away b/c no one would trade anything for them...
i'm right there with you. godawful stuff. but it was a genuine learning experience. it's not so easy to pick up on the fact that tv lies as a matter of course, but stuff like this really wakes you up to that fact--extremely important to learn young.
@robichj I don't think it was discontinued in 1979, cause I wasn't even born untill 1984 and I remember seeing this on the shelves asa kid in the 90s and I think I saw it in the 2000s too, not sure.
lol' wow.......When I was a little boy this is a great tasting peanut Butter my mom gets all the flavors for me, only three Ilike d the best was Vannila Bananna.
I used to LOVE this stuff as a kid growing up in the 70's.The commercials with the Koogle monster were great too!!"Peanutty Koogle with the KOO-KOO-Koogly Eyes!I miss the 70's!!
Koogle chocolate and cinnamon were yummy. I did the grocery shopping with mom (kids, that's how you make sure she buys the good stuff), and was so disappointed when we couldn't find it at the store one day.
Even as a kid, I thought the lyrics for the commercial jingle were poorly written. It sounds like "Koogle, the crappy nutty surprise" - not "Kraft peanutty surprise"...
I remember in '75 or '76 they had the Koogle Monster and the tagline "Don't say no, say Koogle (with the koo-koo-Koogley eyes)". I used to love the vanilla & cinnamon flavors.
I have been looking for the monster commercial for years. I used to see that in my dreams when I was a kid. Its hard to find anyone who remembers that thing.
More information about this commercial, the previous one and the next seven or eight I'll be posting.
The Director of Photography is Richard Shore - this reel came from a film lab (as separate negative and soundtrack) as either a sample of his work or a 'best of' reel.
The mother is played by Alice Playten. I recall this product was actually fairly tasty (although I recall the banana flavor was fairly fake-tasting). It was introduced by Kraft in 1971 (probably the year of this commercial) and discontinued in the late '70s. Thanks for sharing this one, BKDurham!
What I can find out on the web is that it was introduced in 1971. The way the script is written it seems fairly new. Maybe this spot is from 1972? The script seems to be making a point of explaining a lot about what it is and what the flavors are, etc., so I assumed it was filmed upon/shortly after the product was introduced. I wish Kraft's website was a bit more detailed!
My best friend and I, in 2nd grade at the time, bought a jar of chocolate Koogle. We threw it away. It was THAT bad.

I loved this stuff! Mom always got the chocolate kind. Shame they don't make it anymore. :(

Man, that chocolate stuff spread on regular Pringles was the BOMB when I was 8. Great find (but no Koogle monster yet.)

I thought it was introduced in 1974!
