why don't they teach "Rock Gods 101" in school. I can't believe I've been missing out on Uli all this time. That Sky guitar is priceless too, It's the guitar of my dreams!
It's hard to believe that I got to see Uli on his first U.S. solo tour twice. The show he did at the Country Club in Reseda is still my favorite show of all time of the hundreds I've seen. His playing that night was so outstanding that it was veritably rapturous.
Add me to to the list of 'never heard of him until today'. My list of guitar gods has lengthened by one. Although the synth-orchestra on this particular track seems a bit weak to me. It could have used some more careful instrumentation.
Actually, on my copy of those Yngwie demos, he does "We'll Burn the Sky." I don't remember Yngwie doing "Sails of Charon" back then, but that could just be me getting forgetful in my old age.
@robibm2003 I have a bootleg of Yngwing playing the intro to Sails of Charon solo live at a show in San Francisco in 1983, I believe. He was playing with the band Anvil Chorus, which were opening for Alcatrazz. I think the story of the show is Alcatrazz had to cancel last minute but Yngwie still jammed with the openers.
Es un mega guitarrista eso es enfoque en la musica clasica me dejo sorprendido un amigo me lo presento adoro la musica clasica y pues me impacto son cosas que uno no puede perderse
It's amazing how i've somehow missed out on alot of Uli's stuff. I've been a huge huge fan of neo classical and classical music almost all of my life. I've listened to just about everyone in that genre and somehow missed Uli until a few years ago.
I never knew he played this kind of stuff really, I knew he had amazing stuff in the early scorps but I was obvlivious to his classical playing.
I did too. I hard his name back in the day, but never listened to his stuff until now. Amazing, because if you listen to Ships, you will here Yngwie (Little Savage), and a VERY similar part from Mr. Scary. Obviously, UJR was the originator.
Though I know YJM credits Blackmore/Hendrix, I think he was really more influenced by UJR, but to many similarities might have made him look like a copy cat.
ha, dont feel bad, i just found out about him playing this kind of stuff too TODAY... and he's become one big inspiration, dammit where's my guitar! (i'm in school right now :/ ....)
Yeah, I was going to reply with the same words godofreudson. This is a demo recording from mid 80´s and it sounds pretty raw with those drums and keyboards :) But the idea for the song (he got the inspiration from the movie "Amadeus") and the guitar melodies are mindblowing.
Yes and what about the chops from 3.20 to 3.35? Just awesome. The whole song is filled with great chops!!! Uli is really mastering his sky guitar which must be pretty hard to control.
Yes. Maybe I don´t understand the term "chops" fully. I understand it like it is controlling your fingers and hands well when playing fast runs. Is this right or totally wrong? :/
"no your right, chops are another term for licks and runs, this dude has awsome chops... "
No, "chops" basically means "technique", in jazz parlance. There are players with fantastic chops, with terrible "licks and runs" (i.e. bad phrasing, ideas, etc).
Which are the other bonus tracks? I'm a HUGE uli fan. Have listened to ALL of his albums, including Aquila's last suite. I just HAVE TO know bonus, lost, etc. tracks of his. :)
3:36 Ok, its impossible to play this song on a standard 21 frets strat...

Very synth sounding...I'm quite fond of it...but I love almost everything from the 80's so i would love this lol.

For a demo, this is pretty damned good.

Now I can why Uli was such a great influence on Yngwie

Haha! Very nice guitarwork, although the backing track sounds just a little bit dated. Orchestra hit for the win. :)

Yngwie did say in a interview that ULI is as good as a guitar player gets..He didn't hear of him until,
1979 i believe is what he said..Its on the same CD of a demo he made in 79,and sails of Charon,I think..

@cloud041089 I love that kind of drums lol. It wasn't just pop either, listen to Yngwie Malmsteen's Trilogy, they are all over that!

@frankpaws You hit the nail on the head there. Yngwie never mentioned Uli much after he made it...to not reveal his source.

The crazy cheesey keyboard orchestra. Very funny to me.

Well, i don't know if you are aware of, but this is supposed to be some kind of demo...
I agree... sometimes i can't even say what's the instrument the keyboard is supposed to be sounding.
Anyway... It doesn't even belong to the official releases from Uli. I guess he was planing on doing this with a real orchestra later.. who knows.

How do you mean 'chops'? Your chops are your hands, so the song is full of great hands? Or do you mean it in the terms of runs/licks?
