You're right. But also, terran evolved too. Marine micro became better, and turrets are used more frequently.

In the past, terran players wouldn't shift-click and attack individual mutalisks. Now they do, so mutalisks die out faster.

Its warm up. You might not realize it if you aren't a professional starcraft player, but when they are in need of a high apm during micro/macro, they can't just bring it up. They need to warm up their fingers, which is exactly what they do during the beginning of the game.

if you can play with the same micro/macro and without spamming 500 commands per minute early on, you're just as good as any other player

Spamming is mainly to warm up their fingers. Notice that Nada's excellent M&M control comes from being able to use the hotkeys very precisely while having amazing mouse control. He warms up his hands for this at the beginning of the game, thus there is a purpose to the spamming.

it blurrs the vision of range units, making their porjectiles land 1 cell short of their target. hence no marine can kill any unit in the swarm. Tanks on the other hand does splash dmg so they can still kill units in the cloud. it works the other way around too. hydralisks can't hit marines in the cloud.

During a game vs Boxer, Yellow, Nada, Gorush, TheMarine (all in one game), his apm was clocked at 12...times 10^8. During this game however, he was somewhat distracted, so he wasn't playing even worse than his usual 'lowered' speed.
