I think she wears the leg braces because she's extremely lanky (tall and skinny), and cause she has to carry a huge load on her, with the oxygen tank and the basket with a possible little sister in there. If she didn't wear them, her legs would probably snap in two due to all the pressure on her.

The developers themselves said there were little brothers in the bioshock story but they were to agressive to be used as gatherers, they are failed experiments. Maybe if they actually succeded there would be big brothers. If you don't believe me check the bioshock wiki and type in little brother.

@sujin99999 actually Big sisters are the ones who kidnapped the girls on the surface and brought them to Rapture to become little sisters, their also Little Sister protectors since the Big Daddy supply was running low and they were getting picked off one by one, Sophia also needed the big sister to Harvest ADAM as well but they were designed to track down people (possibly anyone who betrayed Sophia or those who had a certain type of ADAM). Basically Big Sisters are the clean up crew.

@sujin99999 weren't you listing to the whole story line? in one of the first audio diaries Tenenbaum explains that she returned to rapture because she figured out that little girls from the SURFACE were being kidnapped and brought to Rapture that's why she returned. Test candidates for Big Daddy's were running low, it takes a volunteer to to get a Big Daddy even Alexander explains this in one of his audio diaries. That's why the Big Sister was created because there weren't any candidates left.

The funny thing is that, if you defeat a Big Sister by electrocuting them, then they do the animation where they shake a lot and they don't fall forward or backward... They fall on their knees and stay upright... Some people may have dirty thoughts of this...
