  • she is so gr88888888888!

  • One of my all time favourites! I have loved this aria for so many years now! Such good wholesome fun! I send my kind, warm and ever humble regards,

  • oh my... such beautiful hair

  • I am no great Schwarzkopf fan, but in this aria she is absolutely UNBEATABLE. And yes, Dame Kiri does switch to Hungarian for the fast part, which I think is just wonderful!

  • I'm sorry... Kiri needs counting lessons. Or "watching-the-conductor" lessons.

  • Madonna benedetta! Terribile.

  • loaded with emotion... wht a vocal inheritance. HURRAH!

  • Strauss was a genius, this is one of the greatest operas (operettas) ever written! anyway, i speak both german and hungarian and the correct spelling is CSARDÁS, it's a typical magyar dance. anyway, I'm Italian, I love opera, but even though 80 % of operas are in Italian, I must follow the libretto to understand something! but opera remains one of the greatest, most powerful musics ever!

  • i understand a bit..,.

oh and @dialectgirl: she switsches to hungrian cos she pretends to be a hungarian dutchess!

  • But is she actually singing German? I know how this goes and still can't hear any words.

  • She's singing in german....I speak german, but I don't understand a thing :D That's the problem with opera ;) But it's wonderful!

  • @tealovesrob die arie heisst klänge der heimat. habe sie selber gesungen^^

  • @tealovesrob Exactly. I saw Renee Fleming at a concert and couldn't understand her even though she sang in English.

  • Kiri, will you marry me?

  • die fledermaus is absolut great !

  • @StillClassic yes... I thought it would be popular.. enjoy :). It is a good one!

  • To cmhmuscle. Your comment shows a complete lack of understanding of the style of the aria, and the music. The Czardas is meant to be sung with a great variation in rhythm. If you had bothered to view the score, this is clearly implied and often marked. I have conducted this operetta many times, and as a professional conductor, find that what Kiri does is entirely true to the spirit of the work, and not hard to follow. Also it is a pity that you have to resort to profanity in your comments.

  • Tencol Thank you for your comment.

  • Among the many good interpretations of this operette, I think Hildegard Heichele and Kiri Te Kanawa are outstanding. What a beautiful power in the Czardas, from 1.52 till 2.10!

  • The main problem here is not Kiri but Placido Domingo, who should stick to singing and leave the baton to the professionals!. The orchestra, arguably one of the world's finest, was hardly ever with her, and the solo violinist was rarely in touch! Such a top soloists should not have to suffer like this!

  • well if she was not fucking around with the rhythm like the worst amateur, maybe they would have been with her - that's DREADFUL. The whole opening is a bloody rhythmic mess on her part.

  • orribbile

  • what language is she singing in?

  • she is singing in German. p.s thanks for making me a friend :D

  • Actually, it sounds like she sings the first part in German and in the fast part she switches to Hungarian. Weird?? :S

  • I saw Kiri sing this role live at the Met several times and she was amazing. This was not an "off night" it was a typical very slightly imperfect live performance by a great artist. The fact that Kiri does not have an easy high D or perfect coloratura is because of her voice type which is what this role calls for. A dark soprano who can sing this with character not a light coloratura with an easy high D.

  • The most recent comment is totally offensive garbage and totally sick to boot. No doubt written by some miserable camel jockey. Gabrilu should have it removed.

  • love kiri, but what an off night. even the greatest have some slip ups i guess

  • i love kiri, but this was gross. this was complete garbage. like, for real... she did not have the coloratura that this aria needed. look at the score and follow and you will be appalled! that wasn't even a d at the end, it was an awkward shout.

  • ez egg nagyon szep szam, igen en nagyon szeretem es en foggom mar jatszani a pianoan mert van nekem a music..........ok this lady has like voice magic i don't understand how oprah people can like do that

  • I so disagree with you. Kiri Te Kanawa was only one of the greatest sopranos of the late 20th century. She sounds wonderful to me. Afterall, it's a live performance. Listen to her when she sings Mozart--true perfection!

  • No. You took me the wrong way. She is one of my favorites. She just sang weakly at this performance. She sang better at the MET. Check it out. This same song is in my favorites sung by Kiri at the MET. I also have a Renee Fleming version, and an Elisabeth Schzwarkopf (don't know if I spelled that right) version.

  • falhou, acontece com muitos bons também....até a Callas falhava...

  • Für mich bist wunderbar

  • You know, it is very common for people who perform this role to hold out that last D, but I have the sheet music in front of me, and it is actually written as an 8th note. This version is just true to the music.

  • amen! Also, they had Kiri sing different german text on the Friszka and she took the popular cut in the middle- perhaps, due to the nature of this special performance & watching celebrity audience. = ) (I'm not negatively critizing this performance, singer, etc...just making the observation.) I'm studying this aria currently and Kiri is ALWAYS AMAZING and, I'm sure ,works soo very hard on everything she does! Awe-inspiring! Thanks for posting!

  • Yes, I think the only person I've seen not take the cut in the middle of the aria is Joan Sutherland. Good luck in your studies, btw! :) This aria is a beast, I worked on it myself this past semester.

  • Vitella- we get the point, you don't like it. But you don't have to be a complete bas***d about it. Yes the high D was not as present as it is in other recordings but I personally find it refreshing to hear it in a different light. It makes it sound slightly more playful. Also, I have no idea what any of you are talking about, calling this mediocre- this is a wonderful performance. Kiri did a marvellous job of tackling that gorgeous, spiralling melody.

  • what happened to the last high D???!!!

  • June Bronhill would be rolling in her grave. This misses the faily pointless point that it sets out to achieve in a huge way... musically and vocally... Oh Kiri...

  • CSÁRDÁS

  • What's up with the orchestra and the violinist.... no one is together!!! Very weird;.. sounds like a piano pedal held down too long. I think Kiri sounds great though.

  • To my ear the on-stage violin isn't always quite in tune either: whether that was deliberate in order to sound somehow "gypsy" or just to give an air of improvisation and naturalness, or whether it just happened, or whether I imagined it, who can say.

  • WHATEVER Kiri!

  • Ths staging looks like a tart.

  • This part doesn't do justice to Ms. Te Kanawa's voice. The role is just too big for her, and the strain is evident. The staging is pretty, at least. And she looks nice.

  • Maybe, but she gives a valid and effective performance even so, I'd say.
