yeah i've heard that 'saying' from as far back as i can remember... the darker the colour the more the M.I.L will love you.. obviously an old wife's tail... probably not so much about the henna artist tho seeing as bridal henna has been around way before henna became a business for 'henna artists'. ppl often squeeze lemon on to the henna designs to allow the henna to come out darker.. not sure if that actually helps tho?
