  • Aaron captures the Italian authenticity better, but I much prefer Matthew's voice. He has a sound in his voice that just makes the song "walk" if you understand what I'm saying. :)

  • Sorry, Matthew.

  • Aaron and Katie remind me of two happy children playing!

  • @citrusbust passeggiata is the past tense for "walk".

it has to do with "the path"...

it is derived from passe with means "goes'.

    just to explain. :)

  • Sweet and cute! Around 6:19 he has a beautiful falseto that just makes you melt!

  • We just did this play at Crowder College, Neosho, Missouri. I played the tour guide.

  • @citrusbust so much more convincing (and I think better) than Matthew Morrison

  • He does a fantastic job! so glad he covers on those high notes. I'm tired of hearing whinny, screamy unsupported high notes.

  • WOW. I was skeptical when I saw it wasn't Matthew Morrison (who is amazing!), but this guy...wow. He's fantastic in his own right.

  • can I just say how much more I love Aaron Lazar? and how thankful I am for his awesome italian diction!

  • I adore this play, i wish i could see it with Matthew morrison in it :0)

  • Is the actor who plays Fabrizzio's father "Prince Humperdink" from The Princess Bride? :) Sure looks like him!

  • @musicalmeg19 Yeah, that's Prince Humperdink! Chris Sarandon... I think he's very handsome and charming. Actually, even when I was little, I had no idea why everyone kept calling Humperdink ugly. He has a great voice.

  • @musicalmeg19 Nope, that was Chris Sarandon, but this is Mark Harelik. They do look quite a bit alike though! I never noticed.

  • @inlovewithJLT Mark Harelik was the original Signor Naccarelli, but by the time of this broadcast he had been replaced by Chris Sarandon -- just as Matthew and Kelli were replaced by Aaron and Katie.

  • i LOVE this

  • It never fails to amuse me to hear these people speak. Signor Naccarelli and Margaret both have strange inflections on words when they speak.

Margaret: "Your SON SEEms TO have the myi-sterious ability to know WH-ere we are going."

S N: "If you move a stone in the streets, COMmitties, OFFicials. YOU cannot change it, it is HIStory!"

I think it's charming to hear such vocal and phonetical variations, even if they are a bit... quirky.

It's what makes the show so great and original.

  • at 1:29 the waiter looked like David Burnham to me. anyone can confirm who's the waiter?

  • @MUSICALANGIE

yeah, I'm pretty sure that's David Burnham.

    can anyone else confirm?

  • @MUSICALANGIE Looks like David to me! I know that he was in this cast. Good eye!

  • @MUSICALANGIE that IS david burnham! good eye!

  • Although it should be readily available, Light In The Piazza is being withheld from mass distribution for reasons that are unjustifiable. You had to be lucky enough to hit the record button. What a world.

  • @citrusbust It's like a walk, but it's a very romantic thing. It's like "taking a turn around the city". You can still see older couples taking "passeggiatas" around their cities when you walk in the evening, in Italy; women in furs and men smoking pipes.

  • It took me some time to like Aaron because I'm so used to Matt's voice, but now I find him very good.

  • much respect for matt morrison but i have to say i really do wish aaron lazar was on the obcr instead : / his voice really does fit the role better

  • When they say Guettel's songs aren't hummable, they're just not listening.

  • The score was transposed after Seattle for Morrison. So, Fabrizio become a baritone with songs that are also written in an optional tenor key.

  • Man Aaron Lazar is really amazing!! His voice is as charming as he is.

  • "Do you like to shave?" ahahahaha

  • I LOVE THIS MUSICAL!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I do think Aaron Lazar's voice suits the role better than Matt Morrison's. Matt has sort of a crooner voice and Aaron's more of a tenor in a classical sense. His tone and control was much more even than Matt's.

  • Michael Jackson is featured at 5:38

  • i love 4:18 when she holds his hand, he belts it

  • actually that's not belting... that's correct classically trained singing

  • you know wat i mean, its just much faster to write belting than singing louder or singing correctly and classically trained

    but thank u

  • His dialect is PERFECT.

& their chemistry is cute enough to make me cry.

  • YOUR SO RIGHT!! This show is so heart wrenching! I love it!

  • I saw clips of this cast before watching the entire Lincoln Center show and noticed Katie and Aaron were a little bit off pitch at times.

But after seeing the entire show it was easy to overlook the pitch problems! Katie and Aaron's chemistry onstage was so beautiful and engaging.

Little details they put in like how Katie claps in this song and Aaron's shy laughs are so touching.

The entire cast was at Lincoln were brilliant too. :)

  • i love this!!! His voice is soooo amazing!!!!

  • LOVE THIS!

  • lazar fits the role of the italian better in terms of appearance but morrison sings it better in my opinion

  • i agree :)

  • I disagree in that I think Lazar sings it better, too. Morrison sings like an American- Lazar has a better Italian tone

  • Hmm... you are right. I asked my Italian friend what he thought of Morrison and without knowing he was American he could totally tell because of the way he pronounced his vowels.

  • 4:18 daang

  • it's only an Ab so it's not that high for a tenor, but he makes it sound very nice

  • An Ab typically near the top of a tenor's chest voice.

  • is that right? that sounds more like a bari-tenor.... a tenor should be able to reach B's and C's.... in his chest

  • no one should be able to reach B's and C's in their chest, so you know! thats not good for the voice!

  • Ummm, most tenors should be able to reach B's and C's (maybe even D's and E's, I've hear an E live) if they're trained classically. Aaron is definitely trained classically, as well as having proper vocal placement, which may be why he sounds a bit like a baritone to some people.

  • @swthemer

yes but they are using a well developed

head voice, using chest voice up there

would hurt even tenor, a tenor second

    passagio is usually a G.

  • Comment removed

  • Just did some research so I didn't make a complete fool of myself, and I do see some people referring to tenors using 'head voice'. I guess its just different terminology because I've always associated head voice with falsetto, which is not what trained tenors use.

  • 6:19 Oh my stars in heaven...

  • Eh, I have been "raised" on the Original Broadway Cast soundtrack, and I am already in love with it. I think that Katie's take on Clara is interesting and charming, but I prefer Kelli's voice.

I also MUCH prefer Matthew's voice to this fellow's...whoever he is...Matthew's is much more consistent.

  • `your milk is... uh... your mother`

    HA!

  • 6:20

  • "Now is I am happine-ESS with you..." Dear lord. The riff. It kills me. It's gorgeous.

  • Aaron, you kill me with those dimples and those little half-laughs.... and then you sing. It's a wonder Katie could stay standing!

  • Okay, his "hapine-ESS" near the end is so beautiful that it made me cry a little. His voice is so amazing!

  • i know right! and he's so loveable! :P

I mean, you fall in love with their love..like.. bah, I can't explain it haha

  • Ah ha ha. I love that Signor F and Mrs.Johnson have this talk. It's hilarious.

That reminds me: Aaron Laazar is a God.

Okay, I'm good now. *Cackles and runs away*

  • does anyone know where i can find the whole show? i lookedon google and it wasnt there.

  • I'm pretty sure it's in google videos, it might be a little towards the end of the search results, but last time a looked (last week) it was there.

  • okay.

  • @SaraASHLEY1212 If you Type in "The Light in the piazza part 1, you can find the whole show

  • Where can I find you people - in a world of "sentiment-o-phobes?" I saw Light In The Piazza twice in Chicago. Ate It Up. Also, Floyd Collins is like Copeland extrapolated!

  • When was it is Chicago?

  • It had a pre-Broadway run at the Goodman Theater Chicago in 2004, then went on to Broadway where it won 6 Tonys in 2005 .. then it finally circled back to Chicago in Summer '06.. for like 8 weeks; blink and you could've missed it. But I Did Not Miss It!

  • i think it means "a walk" or something like that?

  • i love aaron lazar with all my heart & soul!

  • I love this guy! always a special place for matthew morrison...but i love this dudes interpretation!!

  • Lazar's voice is so wonderful and his Italian is great too.

  • the acting in the show was just superb

  • is there a place I can get a copy of this whole broadcast?

  • i don't think so. you could always find someone who has recorded the whole show when it aired. in the meantime, simply go to google videos and type in light in the piazza. last time i checked, the whole show was posted on there.

  • Adam Guettel is a genius. How do you write such amazing stuff??? I was speechless after seeing this show at Lincoln Center. David Burnham, seen as the waiter in this clip, played Fabrizio and was wonderful. Katie was Clara and although sweet, her voice is a bit too "cute" and lacks warmth and good breath support(I prefer Kelli O'Hara). Aaron is just captivating here, despite a vibrato that's a bit wide and heavy. What a gorgeous, gorgeous story!!! No more Disnified B'way, please!!!

  • Aaron is a bit weaker vocally and more operatic than Matthew, but still amazing.

  • I definitely agree that his voice is more operatic, but wouldn't that make his voice stronger? I personally think his voice is much stronger than Matthew's

  • i agree, way stronger

  • i cant believe this is even an issue being debated..lol.. aaron's voice is clearly stronger and operatic...

  • Katie Clark and Aaron Lazar are adorable!

  • I am out of the loop, I've never even heard of this show! This was awesome!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG! Gaahhh. Aaron's Fabrizzio is effing adorable.

  • I agree!!!!!! Trés adorable!!!

  • oh so glad i found this, what a gem!

  • GAHHH I love this show! So beautiful!!

  • the dialogue in this scene is SO good.

  • Fantastic! This looks a stunning show from what I have seen from your wonderful clips. I have the CD and absolutely love it. Just genius really. These clips really bring it alive. I think it will be a while before we get the show in Ne Zealand unfortunately. I eagerly await more of the clips that you have offered to post. So thanks from deep in the Southern Hemisphere! Inspiring stuff I think.

  • I love Light in the Piazza!!
