If not for human intervention, CO2 levels would have continued to fall, as they have been -on balance - over many millions of years. We know life flourishes with 1000+ppm CO2, we also know that life perishes with less than 100-200ppm. We are doing God's work.

My reason for posting that not being that I believe CO2 has no effect, but for one there are many other factors which are poorly understood, or possibly still unknown. It would be very dangerous to reduce our ability to produce energy and/or make it outrageously expensive if we are soon going to need even more of it to just to stay warm. They first observed that we were burning carbon, thus [CO2] up, knowing this should increase temp due to radiation transit they looked for historical data to prove they were right. And they found what they wanted to find. The data was faulty unfortunately. Thus the models are flawed. Thus recalibration now shows cooling. We will increase [CO2] ppm to perhaps 2000. But the effect will take hundreds of yrs to show.

Whether you believe in human-caused global warming or not, think about this: if we can get a bunch of green jobs initiated that, as a byproduct, also result in less pollution, cleaner air, and less reliance on foreign oil, would that be a bad thing?
I think we could turn this economy around with a green jobs revolution. Plus the U.S. could lead the world in a positive way. Reducing our reliance on foreign oil increases our security. If the byproduct is less CO2, then we get bonus points.
But what will pay for the green jobs, and for making vastly more expensive alternative energy competitive? Taxes on our current energy sources, of course. So once that is successful and alternative energy becomes more economically attractive, causing the abandonment of fossil fuels, then there will be no more tax revenue to offset the higher costs, causing widespread poverty.

If we were going to do something radical, that's exactly what that nearly one trillion dollars (actually after compounding interest it will be astronomically more) should have gone toward. Even if it turned out to be a failure, or ultimately unnecessary if and when the consensus shifts, it would certainly have caused the economy to soar to new heights, unlike what we actually got which is dragging it further down.

A proper forest does not need to be managed. The monoculture forests that the timber industry plants are just farms, which therefore need a lot of resources to maintain them.
No, I meant controlled burning in this case. It was left alone, and it did take care of itself. If it hadn't been for the arson, it would have eventually occurred from a lightning strike instead. If nobody lived there, no problem, but since they do, it's necessary to emulate some of the natural processes in a controlled manner so that they will not pose a serious threat to human safety by happening sporadically.

But does it have to be so painful? Technologically and biologically it is quite feasible to make the United States carbon neutral, or even a net carbon sink, without any reduction to a standard of living. Ironically though, it's many of the environmentalists who would oppose the required projects at every step and make this impossible. He did present it in a rather distorted manner though, but that is natural for what amounts to a polemic. There was a court case on that in the UK, so if you wish, you can look for information on that, or verify that higher CO2 levels have lagged the higher temperatures in the past. I'm not qualified to personally knock down the science, but I can tell you that if one looks closely the science has essentially become hijacked for political gain.
You may also be interested in looking up how Mr. Gore has positioned his investments in such a way that a carbon trading shell game may very well make him the wealthiest person in the world, and how utterly ineffective such systems under the Kyoto Protocol have been at actually reducing emissions. I realize there's always a lot of far-fetched conspiracy garbage to sift through on the web, but there's also plenty of verifiable facts which should cause us all to have some serious concerns.

My apricot tree has ripened the last 2 years late November, a full 4-5 weeks ahead of its normal ripening period. The 3 years before that it was mid-December. Snow seasons are decreasing in the Alps. Most of Victoria's electricity generation is brown coal fired contributing substantial CO2 emissions. Ocean acidity is increasing - the Great Barrier Reef is dying.

If not for human intervention, CO2 levels would have continued to fall, as they have been -on balance - over many millions of years. We know life flourishes with 1000+ppm CO2, we also know that life perishes with less than 100-200ppm. We are doing God's work.

There is only one important issue; if the hockey stick graph is built from inaccurate data, or simply represents a natural warming cycle that is not related to CO2 rising in the same timeline, then the entire AGW theory is bust. I cannot believe in this day and age that so much credence has been placed on so little evidence. Coincidence. The CO2 graph now diverges dramatically from the warming graph. Historical data is explicit; the upward trend of warming is not CO2 driven. RE-OPEN THE DEBATE!

My reason for posting that not being that I believe CO2 has no effect, but for one there are many other factors which are poorly understood, or possibly still unknown. It would be very dangerous to reduce our ability to produce energy and/or make it outrageously expensive if we are soon going to need even more of it to just to stay warm. On the other hand we wouldn't want to go spewing out CO2 with reckless abandon the whole time either.

To be perfectly candid, I'm not sure the air was ever in a warming trend. They first observed that we were burning carbon, thus [CO2] up, knowing this should increase temp due to radiation transit they looked for historical data to prove they were right. And they found what they wanted to find. The data was faulty unfortunately. Thus the models are flawed. Thus recalibration now shows cooling. We will increase [CO2] ppm to perhaps 2000. But the effect will take hundreds of yrs to show.

Whether you believe in human-caused global warming or not, think about this: if we can get a bunch of green jobs initiated that, as a byproduct, also result in less pollution, cleaner air, and less reliance on foreign oil, would that be a bad thing?
I think we could turn this economy around with a green jobs revolution. Plus the U.S. could lead the world in a positive way. Reducing our reliance on foreign oil increases our security. If the byproduct is less CO2, then we get bonus points.

So once that is successful and alternative energy becomes more economically attractive, causing the abandonment of fossil fuels, then there will be no more tax revenue to offset the higher costs, causing widespread poverty.

I read an article today that says American cannot make enough Li-ion batteries for plug-in hybrids -- we would have to buy them from France. Instead, we give tax incentives to oil companies, subsidize farmers for not growing crops, and waste money in other ways.
What did the Manhattan project cost? The Apollo project?
The stimulus bill should have contained funding for a big Alternative Energy project, instead of the bizarre array of junk it funds.

Believe it or not, I agree with you there. If we were going to do something radical, that's exactly what that nearly one trillion dollars (actually after compounding interest it will be astronomically more) should have gone toward. Even if it turned out to be a failure, or ultimately unnecessary if and when the consensus shifts, it would certainly have caused the economy to soar to new heights, unlike what we actually got which is dragging it further down.

I had high hopes for the stimulus, but was very disappointed in it. I think we need investments in technologies with specific goals (e.g., increase solar efficiency 50%, increase MPG 50%). Instead, we got dollars thrown in a thousand random directions.

Indeed. All this concern over fossil fuels seems more like a power and money grab than an environmental concern. Invest in better and cheaper technologies and the fossil fuel industry will wither on the vine in no time. If the government turns it into their own cash cow, though, it won't be as eager to dispose of it as the free market would be. There's something very suspicious about the current agenda.

I meant that in relative terms; I don't believe that the corporate leadership waiting to float away on their golden parachutes nowadays are perfectly efficient either, and I certainly don't expect them to have much, if any, concern for social needs. On the other hand I question whether we can count on a government which is in large part beholden to those corporations to work toward the benefit of the common man or woman either.

Shouldn't a forest that is left alone essentially take care of itself? If by "properly managed" you mean thinned and/or clear cut (a la Bush's "healthy forests" program), then I beg to differ. A proper forest does not need to be managed. The monoculture forests that the timber industry plants are just farms, which therefore need a lot of resources to maintain them.

No, I meant controlled burning in this case. It was left alone, and it did take care of itself. If it hadn't been for the arson, it would have eventually occurred from a lightning strike instead. If nobody lived there, no problem, but since they do, it's necessary to emulate some of the natural processes in a controlled manner so that they will not pose a serious threat to human safety by happening sporadically.

But does it have to be so painful? Technologically and biologically it is quite feasible to make the United States carbon neutral, or even a net carbon sink, without any reduction to a standard of living. Ironically though, it's many of the environmentalists who would oppose the required projects at every step and make this impossible. When a government hungry for tax revenue and profiteering corporations are factored in, I fear the results will be far less than satisfactory to anyone.

He did present it in a rather distorted manner though, but that is natural for what amounts to a polemic. There was a court case on that in the UK, so if you wish, you can look for information on that, or verify that higher CO2 levels have lagged the higher temperatures in the past. I'm not qualified to personally knock down the science, but I can tell you that if one looks closely the science has essentially become hijacked for political gain.

You may also be interested in looking up how Mr. Gore has positioned his investments in such a way that a carbon trading shell game may very well make him the wealthiest person in the world, and how utterly ineffective such systems under the Kyoto Protocol have been at actually reducing emissions. What concerns me most though, is that even if they were absolutely correct on the science, the policies being pushed do almost nothing to reduce CO2 emissions, while exacting a far more horrendous cost in human misery than the projected climate change ever could. In the end, the rich will only be made a lot richer, and the poor much, much poorer, and anything that would have happened to the climate from CO2 still will. It is a scam either way.

Al Gore convinced me that there absolutely is scientific proof that a cause and effect relationship exists between rising CO2 levels and catestrophic planetary consequences. Further convincing to me is the relationship of high CO2 levels in the atmosphere and mans consumption of fossil fuels that produce CO2. Farting cows I worry less about.
