  • "...O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him...." YES LORD!! {tears in my eyes} HE's been good!!

  • That's the FIRE! Somethng happens when you get serious about Thanking GOD for all that HE has done. When you know, what you know about The LORD GOD Healing you, Delivering you, Saving you, etc., etc.; bringing you a mighty long way from where you were, it is so good to acknowledge that. This GOSPEL Music by Sis. Dorothy Love Coates has truly been a Blessing to me and I Thank GOD fot it and Thank you for posting it.

  • The best it is.... Traditional Gospel Music is gone... but there are a few of us young folk that know something about the songs that got our people over..... and through... I intend to open a school specializing in Traditional gospel music... let us all pray for the future of Gospel Music! God Bless!

  • This is singing that touches the heart.

  • Does anyone have a copy of her song Mother Told God or know where it can be found?

  • I do love, Dorothy Love Coates. When I was just 13yrs old, the harmonetts would come to Augusta,Ga, home of the swanee Quintett, I would go to their programs, and just feel her spirit as a young girl. I am 73yrs old nnow and know and sing most of her songs. This one I sang at my retirement in 1999. I am so glad I met this woman of god. Her songs are so scriptual. This one is one of my many favorites. God Bless you for all of her music.

  • I love this song thank you so much!! He has truly brought me from a mighty long way!

  • But coming from Primitive Baptist Church and my pastor was a member of a quarter???!!! I now know how anointed and musically blessed they were!!! But MOST CERTAINLY NO ONE can TELL ME or DO I WONDER WHY??? I think back over MY LIFE and what GOD has brought me through!!! My SOUL CRY THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!!! Thank YOU for my earthly mother and daddy who honored you to allow me to REMEMER YOU 1st!!!!! Although I strayed, and could've been Dead sleeping in my grave! I thank GOD for being GOD!!

  • Purity, Old School so they now call it.... Holy Ghost Filled Praise and Worship???? or Come on Children Lets Sing about the Goodness of the LORD!!!!!

Don't LET!! IT be 5th Sunday when ALL CHOIRS COMBINE.. Young, MiddleAged, & Old would be SHOUTING!!!! And I do Mean Shouting with the Holdy Ghost upon them... I did not understand at first why?? This amongst others "AMAZING GRACE", etc. would guarantee a goosebump to rise on your flesh without understanding exactly WHY?

  • I love her! She was awesome! The PBS documentary was good too! I want the world to know how awesome she was!

  • Back in the fifties I was fortunate to see the late great Dorothy Love-Coates with the Original Harmonettes in person in Charleston, SC, my hometown. Sister Coates could rock the house with her singing and semonettes. She was also a force in the civil rights movement working along side Brother Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To her granddaughte, I remind you that you come from good stock. You have a grandmother who makes you proud even now. CWO3 C. L. Lawrence, USN, Retired Virginia Beach, VA

  • There is none that could do it like Mrs. Dorothy Love-Coates and this GOD gifted group of singers! I love this music...my mom my aunts and a few others from their church in Texas that would sing these songs and GOD would really move in the house! Thanks for taking me back to the old time way!

  • I am Mrs.Coates granddaughter and on behalf of myself and my family I would like to thank everyone for their kind words. My grandmother was truly a woman of God. Imiss her very much, but I know she is in heaven singing holy, holy in God's choir.

  • @lmadison77

Your grandmother has been and inspiration to all that hear her voice and ministry. I used to speak with your grandmother by phone and she was never to busy to talk with me and about the goodness of GOD. You and your family are truely blessed. I also enjoyed talking with your aunt Lillian. She is dynamic as well as the harmonettes. Be Blessed! I WILL ALWAYS LOVE DOROTHY LOVE COATES. SHE IS MAY FAVORITE GOSPEL SINGER!

  • I wish I could find a church to go to that praised and sang like this; my Mom was blessed to be raised in such a church...

Happy New Year and may GOD BLESS ALL!

  • Thanks so much for posting this.

  • Lord what a powerful song. Thanks to the poster for posting this "Gem". Is this live song out on a cd??? or would you tell me where I could purchase this concert. Again thanks for posting.

  • Yes my Jesus

  • Lord you have been good to me and I Thank You !!!!!! Amen !

  • thanks for adding this

  • Thank you meilee44,

you've done me such a great favour. God bless you.

  • To those seeking the words:

The original recording says "I could have been dead, sleeping in my grave", but in this recording she says "would have been dead.....". When it comes to songs like this you have to testify for yourself. If the words are a little different that's ok so long as the Spirit is moving on you to sing!

  • Hello. I need hel with the line that goes like this:

I'd rather be dead, sleeping in my grave,

    But______________________

can anyone help me? thank you!

  • I could have been dead, sleeping in my grave,

But Lord you made my enemies behave....

  • I would have been dead, sleeping in my grave. Lord you came by and made old death behave.

  • Thank you so very much, fletchone01 and meilee44

  • I need some help wtih the lyrics to this song. The first verse says,

" When I was down & out Lord

    You know I didn't have a dime

Lord you made a way father

    so I ___________________

    Lord you brought me yeah

You brought me from a might long way. If anyone can help me with this I would be humbled. Thank you in advance.

  • When I was down & out Lord

    You know I didn't have a dime

Lord you made a way father

so many times......Lord you brought me.....

  • When I was down & out, Lord

    You know I didn't have a dime

Lord, you made a way for me

    so, so many times.....

  • I did not no she was the original one who sang this song. This song is still awesome to this day!!

  • Cleo!!!!! You Better sing That Soprano!!!

  • you got me with this one. Thank you.. Thank you.. Thank you. He brought me from a mighty long way...

  • Testify Dot!

  • This is a classic... Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for posting this soul stirring selection by the DLC and the Harmonettes. We don't have church like this anymore. Rowoches, are there any videos of this group's music available?

  • I knew her personally and she lived the life she sang about. I got to see her one last time in washington DC around 1999or 2000 at The Shield Singers anniversary. The video is awesome. Hopefully one day I can post it. RIP Ms. Love Coates

  • Wow, I can't believe you have this. This is one of my favorite songs from the 1980's I was kid when this lady at my church would sing this. I've never heard of this lady but she can sing. Is she the original singer of this song and when was it recorded.

  • Yes indeed! This is the original composer and recording artist of this great song. Dorothy Love Coates has written soooo many songs that are still sung today, like "They Got The Word" and "I'm Just Holding On" both recorded by the Mississippi Mass Choir. Dorothy's "They Got The Word" is originally titled "A City Built Four Square."

  • this isn't the shrine auditorium recording was it??? you know the one with sam cooke/soul stirrers...either way, GOD BLESS YOU FOR THIS POST!!! nobody does it like dottie...she made us birminghamians proud!!!!

  • No, this isn't the Shrine. The Shrine was from 1955...this recording is from 1972. The group accompanying Dorothy Love Coates are the DLC Gospel Singers. I'm so glad that you enjoyed. Take care and God Bless!

  • ooooh, okay!!! thanks so much...

  • thank you Jesus!!~

  • I'm about to shout right now, there's so much annointing in this song...Whew! Praise Him!

  • i love her thank GOd for her

  • Loven that old beat there! U better sing Dorothy!

  • My God! I haven't heard this in it's entirety since the 80's. Thanks so much for posting!!

  • WOW!!

Power here!! Conviction here!! Soul stirring here!!

I heard a lot of singing in the past but not quite like this.

  • sister told it like it was. she never would play with you.

  • good Lord! this just brings tears to my eyes!!! I want to go to church and hear the Spirit come right out of somebody in praise like this!

  • I always ask myself why women don't scream like that in church anymore?!?! This was "normal" when I was a kid....what happened to real church?

  • OK, you just showing out now...you pulling out some Dorothy Love Coates I haven't heard. She's my favorite--no offense to anyone, but I'll take her and them Harmonettes over any of the old school, yeah even over the Caravans:-)

  • this is awesome! what album is this live version on? and were about to go into a dance?

  • I don't know the name of the album, however I do know that it was a concert featuring other artists as well. Someone sent me a Dorothy Love Coates CD a while back, and those 2 songs were a part of the compilation that was made for me.

  • Oh i see, thank you!

  • I don't care what nobody says, Dorothy Love Coates was the best lyricist that ever was! That woman could write songs that make your insides jump up and down!!!!

  • Man My Auntie use to walk this haha Man I miss her. She would tear the church up! YOu Brought Me! From a mighty Loong way. I said Master.. haha

  • Glory Hallelujah! Jesus set me free! Thank you Jesus! Peace, love and happiness to you all ...He is coming soon! Oh yes, He has been good to me ...oh yes! yours in kindness michael....

  • now, that's alright....

  • This song is "timeless". You can just imagine it being written very recent as opposed to being written decades ago. DLC was truly ahead of her time.

  • talk to your god, sister coates! if you think this woman is playing, you just try her. amazing!

  • I knew you would put this one on eventualy. It is the fiercest gospel song I ever heard!!

  • I have heard her sing this live many times, and the same excitment always followed. folks falling out in the spirit for days! you could always tell when Dorothy was about to sing this song; LORD YOU'VE BEEN GOOD TO ME, THATS WHEN THE USHER OR SOMEONE FROM HER CREW WOULD BRING A STOOL OUT.. HMM . SHE WOULD START OUT SINGING THIS HIT FROM THE STOOL, BUT THAT WOULDNT LAST VERY LONG TILL SHE WAS SWOOPING AND SWOONING AND FLYING ALL OVER THE STAGE WHILE HER BACKUP GIRLS NEVER MISSED A BEAT! WOW!

  • Thanks for posting this! Is there any footage of Sis. Love Coates that was taped in her later years before the time of her homegoing?

  • As far as performances, I'm uncertain....but there was a video documentary done the year before she passed.

  • Mrs Love-Coates did a documentory on Public Broadcasting Television a few years ago. You might wont to contact that television company to try and purchase a copy.

  • thanks SO for this, do you know when this was?

    WHAT A BLESSING THIS IS

  • So many thanks for this post! This is chu'ch for real, back when the deacons would rock, cry, & clap their hands, and the sisters would get stiff & holler.

Takes me back to my home church!

  • Sing Tee!!! Wonderful Post Dewayne. This definitely gets a 5 star rating.

  • were you some kin to this powerful woman?

  • She was my aunt in life and she is still my aunt in death.
