Words fail. Superb rendition of a fine romantic miniature. How much better does this choir sound in its native acoustic than in a concert hall? I've heard reviewers liken the St John's altos in concert to bleating sheep. Even the somewhat immature bass timbre common with English college choirs is transformed back in the chapel to something quite other. Bravi gentlemen! If you are one of these young chorister now grown up, be proud - be very proud.
@ImmaculateCoffee I was in response to the trend of atheists posting on videos of religious music, prefacing their comments with, "I am atheist but..."
Religious or Atheist, it doesn't matter. If you can't see the beauty in this then you have far more important issues than religious identity that you should be focusing on instead of sitting here degrading religion. I'm not Catholic, or even Christian, but I often go to the Basilica in my city because I appreciate the artistic beauty in thier traditions, even if I don't believe in them myself.
Having no religious beliefs is one thing. Having no belief in a supreme being, or a supreme intelligence, or personality, is totally different. One can believe in God without belonging to any religious affiliation.
Speaking as respectfully as I can, I'm as atheist as one can be; I don't care much for religion or overtly religious people. But I looove singing this music. I'm actually in two choirs (not church choirs), just so I can sing lots of it. Go figure. I'll be singing this in June 2011. I hope we sound half as good. Thanks for this beautiful music.
@TheoO18 I sing for a few reasons: 1. I lift weights, and vocalizing after weightlifting is an excellent way to replenish oxygen stores. 2. A Cappella singing in a competent group is a sensual experience - a high - like no other. 3. Being a singer gets me dates.
@Silverdaddy101 One can be Agnostic or Atheist without being a Nihilist. A great example of an Atheist composer would be: Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975): Soviet composer, one of the most popular of the 20th century and Richard Rodgers (1902–1979): American composer of the music for more than 900 songs and 40 Broadway musicals, best known for his songwriting partnerships with the lyricists Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II.
Baldwalrus71 You wrote: "Why do atheists on all these videos feel the need to proclaim they have no religious beliefs? Can you not simply say: it's good?" But I believe the atheists who preface their appreciative comments on this beautiful music by identifying themselves as atheists intend it as a compliment. They are trying to say that despite the fact the religious messaging of the music does not touch them, per se, the beauty & musical artistry still reaches them. High praise, indeed.
I like Mozart's exclamation" Protestantism is in the head". In other words, they are totally cerebral., they like to try to rationalize and explain EVERYTHING!
How on earth could anyone explain incense as prayer rising to heaven?
Bread and wine being transformed into the Body and Blood of Jesus. Let's put humanity and it's reasoning above anything unexplainable such as the Divine.
is it impossible to share a beautiful piece of music without subjecting i to all these petty Western inter-Christian conflicts nowadays? And coming from a Presbytarian South African (me) that should say something!
I do not believe in God, I never have and I probably never will. But I see no reason why not to enjoy beautiful music, it exists for everyone to hear, no matter what your beliefs are. You only have to believe in power of music. This is my religion.
i like the version of ave maris stella.i think you have a great devotion to our mother of god mary.thats why you sand it very well.i like the guy who has a beared and mustache on the 1st part..hes nice singer i think.
Many Anglican high churches still sing the Angelus at the end of Mass in font of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I took a catholic friend of mine who was very surprised.
By the way, this is an Anglican Choir, right? If so this must be some high Mariology to swallow! Ever-Virgin, Gate of heaven, break the captive's chains, ask for all good (for us). Golly.
Actually, I suspect Anglican doctrine isn't as radically different from Catholicism (at least compared to most other Protestant beliefs). I'm not sure though, so you might want to double check. :)
Of course it's closer to Catholicism. That's why Pusey etc. called it a "via media" between Catholicism and Protestantism. However, Anglicanism has historically rejected praying to saints, and usually will not sing hymns to Mary.
oooh, i had no idea. odd. i guess i should read more, haha. btw, a question... which is closer to Catholicism, the Lutherans or Anglicans? Just curious.
Probably Anglicans, at least traditional or "high-church" Anglicans. Anglicans tend to accept more apostolic tradition, believe that bishops are a divine office, have a more traditional liturgy (in the Book of Common Prayer), etc. But compared with Calvinism, Baptists, etc. both are much closer to Catholicism.
@baldwalrus7 Atheism is itself a religion. All religions seek to propogate themselves. Religions seek to make the world a better place. Atheists believe that the world would be a better place without religion. Of course religious people think the world would be a better place without atheism. Does all this make sense to you?
@baldwalrus7 I have this video as my "religious beliefs" on facebook... not because I am a christian - I am not a christian. My religion is all the wonder and beauty that comes from creating, participating in and listening to beautiful music like this.
@baldwalrus7 I do not reference religion in comments on music, except for now...for the sake of argument its probably along the same lines as why christians proclaim good music as evidence for god. Can they not simply say: it's good? Either way it really doesn't matter much, just people blabbering about this, that, and the other. People love to stick their opinions where they aren't wanted (case in point: what I'm writing to you).

The wine and bread are representations of the body of christ
A wonderful metaphor given to us by Christ Jesus himself
This music is stunning and having just sung in that wonderful chapel myself recently I can really appreciate the quality of sound produced

Is it my impression or the boys don't sing these parts
"Sumens illud Ave,
Gabrielis ore,
Funda nos in pace
Mutans Evae nomen.
Virgo singularis,
Inter omnes mitis,
Nos, culpis solutos,
Mites fac et castos."
Well, they've got a great voice, God bless them and keep them happy in God through Mary!
