Great looking place to hang out. I worked in a paper mill for many years so I'm very familiar with those funky smells. Yep, it's a give and take. I HATE cigarettes and for all those years I packaged cigarette paper for export. You do what ya gotta do:)
Thank you Gary...I have just finished watching all of your videos. So the Anakin1814 chapter of the Chris Mast Experience is over...well kinda I was already subbed to you. Now make more videos!!! :)
I love the sounds there; the birds are nice and the sound of the water is soothing. I'm glad they are cleaning up the river. I'll bet the river has been running like crazy with all the rain. Beautiful Gary.
MAn I love Wisconsin. Congrats on sticking with your diet and running. I have lost probably another 10 lbs since I've talked to you last. I love this whole "skinny" thing.
Just catching up on videos after travelling. Wow - for not a big river, that's quite a big river! It's so easy to overlook the stuff that's close to home. Sometimes it pays to play 'tourist in your own town'.
The paper industry? I suppose that makes sense, given the wood source and the river, but for some reason I was expecting the industry to be more along the lines of beer and cheese...
My understanding is that it was named after the Thousand Islands archipelago in the St Laurent river & northeast corner of Lake Ontario near Kingston. My view may be skewed because I was living there when I heard the story.
In 1634, Jean Nicollet travelled up that river, then down the Wisconsin in search of a passage to the Pacific. He almost discovered the Mississippi, but when the Wisconsin began to widen, he was so sure that he has almost reached the sea, he just turned around and went back to Quebec and said he had found a passage to the "South Sea."
Beautiful footage! I still haven't went on my day trip that I was planning. I've been having some back problems, and they're just now getting better. I might try to go on a day trip this weekend, and get some footage. :-)
Ahh...what a fine day that must have been. Making me miss our roadtrip already! I think it's time Rich and I restarted our Bay Area hiking and biking adventures.
I'm liking the title. "The ocean is the rivers goal"
I love the look of that river, especially the first place you showed us. I think i could sit there for hours & it's only 7 miles from your house! Cool.
it looked like there were some nice trails around there that you could run on. Combine your exploring, with some running? :)
Very cool that you can locate water with both flora and fauna fairly easily.
The last vlog you did helped me come up with how I was going to direct my summer short road trips. I'm thinking that even though the desert seems foreboding, if you know the state well, you can find all the mini-oasis and hidden cool spots. So I thought it would be cool to visit them this year. Kind of symbolic of the times...in the vast hot desert you can find relief in the bright spot of an small oasis.
Cool. I took a bunch of video on my walk but not too much narration-might try and make a video response with it. It's funny you mention you seeing things differently because of your camera, I feel the same way. When I started hiking earlier this year the only reason I went was to find something to take pictures of . Now the walking is as important to me as the pictures taking and so much better than the walks I went on before because I now look at things with a photographers eye.
impressive scenery! and good luck with the training, it's all a matter of habit and routine - I did my 10k a few weeks back but have continued with the lunchtime runs, thinking about entering a 1/2 marathon myself in September but I know that will require a lot more training.
I think I saw the heart of the island in the background.
ZOMG!!

The creek area reminds me a little of the TX Hill Country.

Keep on runnin' Gary!!! You will make that full marathon before you know it! :0)

You have to take the good with the bad I guess. The industry supports the town - as long as it's a mutual relationship.
Amazing such a place is only 7 miles from your home. Wish we had more places like that around me.
