Great Technique man, but I didn't understand one thing: When you're moving down the scale and you change of string you do an up or down stroke? I think you do an up stroke but I'm not completely sure.
hai ben, first of all i wanna say you're a master in playing the guitar :D but i got a question about the picking, you start on the low e string with a down up down, what is you picking on the a string then? i wanna learn to shred but my picking is crap :D i hope you can help me. grtz
I've been playing since 2004 and around the 3rd year mark I ended up getting really lazy with my playing and I never really learnt scales, modules, shapes etc and now my techniques are sloppy and feel like its trapped in one location and doesn't sync with my right hand right when it comes to picking certian things. So I've decided to re-learn everything.
anyway long story short: I'm trying the stretch shape from this video, is it normal for your hand to get tiredish/sore?
With anything new and fairly "physical" on the guitar you will feel some degree of tiredness in your hands when youve been practicing for a while. Your muscles will get used to it once you play more often and regularly.
Great lesson mate, really helpful, just wondering if you have any tips or exercises for developing a legato technique as my hammers are fine (as far as i'm concerned) but my pull offs are 'lacking'.
I think the most simple way to get legato down is to learn all of your different shapes and then practice fertting everything without picking. Try and get the notes to ring out aswell as they would when picked. This will develop a much stringer fretting hand so that when you come to do legato you dont rely on picking each note. For pull offs just pick a scale or shape with 3 or 4 notes per string and pull off the notes with out picking up and down the neck.
Its always good to practice to a metronome with everything you play. I always found it a bit more interesting to practice to a drum beat/loop or a backing track/song. Just makes practice a bit more interesting and keeps you motivated. But of course whatever works for you :)

very cool lesson, at some point i will have to put this to paper and then to guitar pro as i find it difficult to learn without any sort of visual aid
Thanks really great lesson as always. A few days ago I was playing chords thinking I might be able to shred one day.. And now I'm shredding my arse off! Thanks Ben ! :)
please answer this question =] do u rest ur palm on the bridge if not what do u do i dont rest it on the bridge is this ok its very comfortable for me and dosent rescrict speed also my shoulder has been tensing up for some reaosn past 2 weeks and trust me i use my thumb and index when i pick and open up too the wrist for extra boost of speed so my wrist is more then comfortable its just my shoulder im really frustrated caause i cant play for 5 minutes without it hurting any tips cheers from aus
I rest my palm lightly on the bridge. When playing fast stuff a tiny amount of muting keeps it tight and clean.
If you have problems with tensing up then make sure when you do tense up stop and let your muscles rest. If you do this every time your body will learn to not tense when you play as, tension = no guitar playing. Also try to be relaxed when you play like most things its just easier when your relaxed. Just make sure you dont do any long term damage.
@benwilshire thanks btw im 15 =] i would go nuts if i had a long term injury guitar is all i do love your vids keep making vids there awsome i rekon u should do some more yingwie licks i liked the pedal point one and yes it is much easier to play relaxed anyways cheers mate
Just wanted to stop by and thank you! I've been practicing with the new pick position for almost 15 days and I feel A LOT better, my hand moves freely around the strings, I don't have arm tension anymore when playing and my speed has actually got better! If I try to hold the pick in the way I did before it just doesn't feel right anymore, so, I guess the adaptation is complete ;)
Hey man... when you pick the first excercise (or any involving 3 note per string) are you playing Economy or Alternate picking?
I tried this and economy is too hard for me to handle now I am proficient in alternate, but I can't get the speed out of alternate because there's too much movement.
Yeah i use pretty much alternate picking all the time. Some times economy just depends what im playing. Just play what feels right.
If you cant get much speed from alternate picking it may be because you voer shoot the string. When you pick dont go up or down anymore than you need to. This is less movement and makes for faster and cleaner picking.
The last exercise, well I'm still working on it. But I found it to be a bitch of an exercise to start off with! lol! I'm still getting use to holding the pick differently!.. Thanks this though I'll take what I can from it! ;-)
You keep the same picking pattern but change your shapes to the harmonic minor scale so the 7th note will be sharpened so you would play a G# instead of a G. In the kay of A a 6th fret on the D string not the 5th.
sorry but this isn't that helpful at all. Great technique though.

Grean video, ben. It's helping a lot so far!
You could also do a bluesy run like:
A B C D E F (index, ring, pinky, index, middle, ring for y'all beginners)

Hey Ben, may I ask you a question?
How fast do you get with your picking? How many BPM to you take for sextuplets?
Would be great to hear an answer.

hi, i was wondering if someone could tell me if i´m right:
Ben uses his wrist to play through fast scale patterns, and he uses the movement of the thump and right fingers for slower licks, is this true??

Nice playing. Isn't the malmsteen gold watch supposed to be on the fretting hand? Lol! He should release signature malmsteen shred watches.
